Hon Chemistry 10-3-11 Mixture Separation Lab

HON CHEMISTRY: Pretty intense few days, huh? You know, I’m really proud of you! It’s one thing to be able to follow a set of directions, but it’s a whole other thing to be able to come up with the directions on your own! That’s a difficult thing to learn how to do, and you are doing a great job developing that skill.

Any questions about writing up the lab report for tomorrow? Use the Lab Report manuscript form you can find here or on Edline. Remember, some of you definitely need to elaborate on your procedure! And then, after you write your own conclusion, don’t forget the questions on page 27 of your book: Analysis & Interpretation 1, Conclusion questions 1 – 4, and Extension questions 1 – 2.

Chemistry Chapter 1 Test – Symbols

CHEMISTRY – Good luck as you prepare for the test on the symbols tomorrow. It won’t be that long – only 14 or so. Hey, have you had a chance to check out the Chap 1 Study Suggestions sheet? Symbols test tomorrow (very short) and then the main test on Wednesday! (BTW – click on the name to open the Chap 1 Study Suggestions sheet.

Don’t forget this great study aid from quizlet.com. In the bottom right corner, click on “Choose a Study Mode” and you can change the layout and study different ways. If you already know them, try “Learn.” If you are just beginning to learn the symbols, I’d try “Scatter,” then go to quizlet.com (or click on the bottom left where it says “Study these flash cards”) and try “Space and Race.” I LOVE that game. It really puts your brain in gear and is great practice!

Good luck learning them – and don’t forget, the actual elements you have to know are the elements with these atomic numbers: 1 – 58, 60, 61, 74, 76 – 95.

Hon Chemistry 9-30-11 Chemical Formulas – Part 1

HON CHEMISTRY: Great start on writing and naming chemical formulas, and you did it without me! Well, kind of. 🙂 Here’s the lecture from Friday. Friday we concentrated on binary ionic compounds, and Monday we’ll do compounds with polyatomic ions. Make sure to take time to practice, practice, practice this weekend. You’ll be as lost as ball in high weeds on Monday if you don’t!
