Recently, it has been discovered that some seabirds do not just survive storms but they rather ride the storms. It has been proven some birds fly next to the eye of the storm for hours at a time to survive. This is interesting because no birds have exhibited this behavior before and it shows how this could be a tatic birds use to preserve energy and survive the storm.

What I read was that amphibians such as frogs have been declining in population due to the spread of malaria. It is believed that due to disappearing of frogs that there have been more mosquitoes, making it easier for the disease to spread. Scientists have said that they have no idea why amphibians have been lowering in population recently.

I read about how blood vessels protect dolphin and whale brains when they dive. The many networks of blood vessels protect the brain from the pulses of blood pressure that then animals endure when diving down deep into the ocean. Scientists call the blood vessels retia mirabilia meaning “wonderful nets”. Scientists used data to see how fast and how hard the impact is when dolphins and whales dive and then saw how the blood vessels protected them. The wonderful nets evened out the blood vessels so they wouldn’t be injured.

Recently, there has been discussion that once you have a concussion you’re at higher risk to have another one. The dolphins quarterback was hit in the head hard and played the next week and when he was hit again, he left the field due to a concussion which lead scientists to think that he had a concussion the previous week. This then lead scientists to believe that because he “had a concussion” the previous week, it was more easy for him to suffer another one.

I read that honeybees have a mental number line and that this association has biological roots. Studies have shown that honey bees can count and that they understand the concept of zero. It has also been found that bees have a left to right number ordering.

I read about how some sea-dwelling birds fly into typhoons in order to survive them. While some bird flies far around the eye of the storm, researchers found that most of the shearwater birds, that were tracked, flew within 60 km of the eye of the storm.

From my study of how diet and dementia are related, I now know that most of “what you hear” is from from the truth. The healthier you eat the lower your risk of developing dementia. Foods with a high anti-inflammatory substance had a much lower risk of dementia than diets filled with fats and sugars. While this is true, dieting research gets tricky to link to health and disease research as there is no definite link. Eating healthy does overall improve your health which lowers your chances of developing a chronic illness like dementia.

I read about how honeybees prefer their numbers from left to right. If the number is smaller they will fly to the left. If the number is bigger they will fly to the right. They have asymmetrical brains which process information differently on the left and right sides.

Astronomers have recently noticed dust being pushed by a star. This is the first time light has ever been recorded pushing dust. This dust was formed when two stars collided and turned into soot. This dust is traveling at 10 Million km/h. This dust only forms when two stars are at the perfect distance apart.

I read that Dolphins and Whales have clumps of blood vessels that protect their brains when they’re diving deep in the ocean. When these animals dive deep, they have to hold their breaths so they can exhale to release the pressure on their brains. Unlike land animals, they don’t have to hold their breaths for long periods of time so they don’t need these blood vessels.

Currently, Scientists have discovered a new way that resistivity can cause instabilities in the plasma edge, where temperatures and pressures rise sharply. By incorporating resistivity into models that predict the behavior of plasma, a soup of electrons and atomic nuclei that makes up 99% of the visible universe, scientists can design systems for future fusion facilities that make the plasma more stable.

A study in Israel showed that sunlight makes males hungrier, but not females. It is believed that sunlight causes the skin to produce the “hunger hormone.” The reason this doesn’t happen in females is because the female hormone, estrogen, stops the body from producing the hunger hormone.

I read about how scientists learned new things about some mammals by looking into something they had assumed they already knew. The scientists saw a group of monkeys rubbing against a tree and they assumed they were marking their territory. but they realized the monkeys were only rubbing themselves on the sap of the tree. The scientists found out that they were using the tree sap from the cabreúva tree to medicate themselves for something, so they set up a trail cam and saw many other species do the same. One of the researchers said near the end about how this is yet another reason we need to carefully preserve our forests.

I read a study on how lunar soil can be used to make oxygen on the moon. Scientists are trying to make oxygen to live on the moon by mixing water with the lunar soil. They are trying to make it by using a process like terrestrial photosynthesis.

Heat waves in rivers and lakes are rising. This is mainly caused by humans who have made global warming worse.

Have you ever wonder how seabirds escape natural disasters like typhoons? A study shows that birds fly directly in them to be safe. A gps tracker was placed on birds before a typhoon. When the birds were sandwiched between land and the eye of a strong cyclone they would sometimes veer off their usual flight pattern and go directly into the eye of the storm. This behavior saves birds from going inland and crashing into objects or land.

The US recorded the tempatures for 26 years using 70 different water sites and from 1996 to 2021 heat waves per river climbed from 11 to 25 heat waves daily. The researchers found that the frequency of extreme heat increased at sites above reservoirs and in free flowing conditions but not below reservoirs.

I read an article about the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs might’ve had a second asteroid that would’ve harmed earth more. Scientists found an 8.5 kilometer wide crater off the coast of West Africa, and they have estimated that it impacted with earth around the same time Chicxulub, the dinosaur killer, impacted with earth. In other words, the second asteroid which the scientists have named Nadir, would’ve deepened the wound earth already had.

I looked into heatwaves heating up the rivers in the US. These rivers heating up from the heatwaves are not good at all because of the high temperatures chemical reactions take place faster contaminating the water and affecting the wildlife. This is even heating up the earth and adding to global warming.

This week I read about how blue lakes around America could change brown or green. Because of temperatures rising it could cause the fungi to increase in some lakes and change colors. Researchers say if temperatures increase by 3 degrees Celsius about 3,800 lakes could change color across America. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/climate-change-lake-color-blue-green-brown
When a jet stream moves closer to the Earth’s poles, a heat wave occurs. Heat waves are life-threatening. Between 1998 and 2017 more than 160,000 people have died from heat. Not only do heat waves kill people but they also cause droughts.

I read about honeybees, and how they have a “mental number line” like humans. When looking at the studies, most scientists believe that the results oversimplify complex human behavior. Previous experiments have shown that honeybees can count and understand the concept of zero. Many experiments were done to test the theory, and most of the scientists, even some who weren’t involved, believed that honeybees have a mental number line.

I researched on how late night eating can make more ricks for your health. Like before this study was done other studies said that late night eating can help with losing weight and etc. but this study shows how late night eating can risk more hunger, weight gain, other health conditions. They are still trying to find more evidence on why things effects us in some ways.

I have read about a fisher( tree wolverine) named F023, and how she was able to help experts learn about other fishers. She also helped researchers gain information on how we can restore their population in the wild. This article follows F023’s journey and how the experts helped the fisher population grow throughout the years. This article also covered how important fishers are in the animal world. It also showed how much damage humans can do to the ecosystem, but it also showed how much we do to save what we have destroyed.

It has been discovered that the chemical trimethylamine protects fish in deeper waters from getting crushed by the high pressures. This chemical is the chemical that gives fish their fishy smell. Trimethylamine can be used to treat diseases with pressure problems, such as glaucoma and cystic fibrosis. Currently it is being used to stabilize proteins in the lab.
