Chemistry 1-28-16 Wave Properties of Light

CHEMISTRY: So tell me again, if we’re supposed to be figuring out electrons, why are we studying waves? Here’s the combined lecture from Thursday & Friday on that very thing. Make sure you know the types of electromagnetic radiation and the uses of most of them (all except for long waves). And just in case you really need to sing that song again, here’s The Electromagnetic Spectrum Song

How did you like the light problem formulas – so far? We’ll explore wave problems further next week – be sure to bring a calculator to class!

  1. This week, I learned how to use the spectrometer and how it captures light waves. In addition, I learned that wavelength and frequency are inversely proportional to each other and how it functions in an equation. Overall, I would rate myself a 3/5 for the week.

  2. This week we did a lab using a spectrometer. It was really cool to see how looking at different kinds of lights showed different things on spectrometer. It was kinda hard to use because you had to get it in the perfect spot to see the numbers and the colors. It’s so interesting that when we looked at the lights through the spectrometer it looked like the rainbow. I’ve always wondered how that worked so I can’t wait to learn more about it in this chapter. I also learned how to find speen with frequency and wavelength. The problems seem kinda easy. I hope I can do better on this test than I did on this past test. I rate myself a 3/5 for this week

  3. This week we did a lab where we had to use a spectrometer. It was really interesting to see how different kinds of lights had different spectrums. I struggled when we first used it. I couldn’t quite point it in the right direction, but I got the hang of it. We also learned about wavelength, speed, and frequency. I think the problems were rather easy, just remembering all the formulas and units might take a while.

  4. This week we began learning about wavelengths and did a very fun lab. The lab was very simple, and I enjoyed learning about light. We also learned a song which would help us memorize the different types of wavelengths.

  5. This week was very fun looking at the different kinds of lights using the different equipment. I learned that light is more than what you might think at first. I rate myself a 1/5 this week because I did not finish my lab. :/

  6. This week in chemistry as we learned about the electromagnetic spectrum I completely understood the leason thanks to my amazing chemistry teacher

  7. This week we did an interesting lab using a spectrometer to look at lights. We also learned about wavelength, frequency, and the electromagnetic spectrum. It does not seem to complicated, and I think I will do well with those types of problems.

  8. This week was a triumph for me. We did the spectroscopy lab, where I learned that light gives off colors if you look at it through a diffraction grating. This amazes me because I learned something I never would have known without Chemistry. I think I did very well on the lab. I rate myself a 5/5 this week!

  9. This week I enjoyed doing the lab with the spectrometer. It was cool to see the different spectrums for the different types of light. I think I’ll do well on the wavelength problems after i get some practice with them. I give myself 4/5 stars.

  10. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I learned a lot about light and how to use a spectrometer. I rate myself high for completing the spectroscopy lab. I enjoyed seeing the spectrum’s on the different kinds of light.

  11. This week in chemistry I learned how to use the spectrometer. I would rate myself 4/5 stars this week because I understood how to complete the lab and what we learned in class.

  12. This week we learned about the radio wave spectrum. Wasn’t here for the lab, so for when I was here I would rate myself 4/5

  13. This week I enjoyed our lab using the spectrometer. it gave a good picture of the visible light that we can see. I did good on the practice problems with vabe length and frequency

  14. This week in chemistry we did a lab. In the lab we learned how to use a diffraction grating and a spectrometer. This lab was cool because you could see the colors the light gives off when using one of these tools. Also we learned about the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and a song to help us with that. This week I would rate myself a 4/5.

  15. This week I thought the lab was fun. I enjoyed looking at how we think we see one color but really it’s a separation of multiple colors and we went into why that is. I enjoy learning about things like that and I find it interesting.

  16. This week I rate myself a 4/5 I struggled on time management during the spectrometer lab. It was really cool to see how the light changes based on fluorescent and incandescent light. The fluorescent light was streaky and the incandescent light was a nice line of all the different colors. I also learned the electromagnetic spectrum which the song helped me memorize the order

  17. I enjoyed doing the light lab this week. I remember learning about ROYGBIV in 8th grade. I wish I would have reviewed the smoke alarm more so I could have done better on the discussion question, I would rate myself a 4/5 rating this week.

  18. This week I rate myself a 5/5. I enjoyed learning how to use a spectrometer and how they work. Seeing the different types of rainbows showed was cool too.

  19. This week we touched the tip of the ice berg with visible light. I really enjoyed all of the hands on activities and labs. Those types of activities help me understand and process the information extremely well. I would rate myself a 5/5 this week because of how well I understood.

  20. This week in chemistry I learned about radio waves and spectrometers. I got my test back and felt I’ve done better than I did on past test. I would rate myself 4 out of 5 for this week.

  21. This week I felt that my lab partner and I did very will on the lab in class. I feel like I could have done better on my test.

  22. This week, I learned about spectroscopy, and the types of waves on the electromagnetic spectrum. I enjoyed using the diffraction lens to see light split up into colors. I’d rate myself 4/5, as there’s always room for improvement.

  23. This week I enjoyed doing the labs with the lights spectrum! I felt like it helped me better understand more about electrons. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week.

  24. This week we learned about wave lengths. I struggle with it but we kept going over it and I started to understand. Grade 3/5

  25. This week we learned how to use a spectrometer and see the different colors in lights. This week I would rate myself a 3/5 because I understood how to do the lab but I need to improve on applying the things we learn in class to get a better grade on our tests.

  28. This week we learned about light and how to use a spectrometer. I struggled with seeing the light through the spectrometer in the lab but my lab partner was able to. I caught on to what we learned this week pretty well I think though. Because of this I would rate myself 4/5 for the week.

  29. This week, I learned how to use a spectrometer and began to apply its uses in matters of more than just light. I rate myself a 3/5 as I struggled with actually doing the lab. However, I feel as though I have a firm understanding of its use and look forward to further applications!

  30. This week we did a really fun lab! We got to look through a spectrometer and it showed a light spectrum and it was so cool you could see something like that from looking at a light at a different perspective. I would love to do more labs like this!! I would rate myself a 2 out of 5 this week because I didn’t completely finish my lab for Thursday.

  31. I’m really happy with how chemistry went this week. I understand the new material we’ve been covering in class the past two days. I was disorganized in the beginning of the week; I didn’t have a full understanding of the spectroscopy lab going into it and had to play catchup on the first day. After that, however, I am proud of my work in chemistry this week. We got back a test that I did very well on and I am comfortable with how I turned my lab in. This week I would rate myself a 4/5.

  36. This week I learned that electromagnetic radiation or light is all around us, it sounds scary, but we use it everyday to do simple tasks we don’t even realize we’re using radiation to do. Like, use a microwave. I rate myself a 3/5 for the week, because I did my best to observe and absorb all the information I could!

  37. I’m sorry for venting and not writing a real web post last week. I learned so much from the visibly light lab . I didn’t think there would be a big difference in how the the lights looked through the plastic grating . I liked learning about both kinds of lights and why they are different . Like the fluorescent light is hot so the color rage wider and the colors are more vibrant. The incandescent light had a shorter rage of color but some of them almost glowed. i give my shelf a 4/5 because i worked really hard the lab.
