As you are studying, make sure you go back and practice figuring out the period, block, group, and type of element from the electron configuration. And don’t forget the topics I asked you to research for yourself that you will find on the Chapter 5 Stuff to Know Sheet!!

The videos that you must watch from the s-block for the test are potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
The elements from the d block that I especially want you to watch are copper and mercury. And there are other interesting ones you might like to watch just for fun!

During a total solar eclipse, our eyes trick us because of the false twilight. As the moon blocks the sun’s rays, colors fade away to a less abundant scale. Reds may appear dark or even black, while blues and greens pop. This color shift results from atmospheric scattering of sunlight and changes in our eyes’ sensitivity during dim-light conditions.

Bumblebee queens are able to survive many dangerous scenarios when hibernating like the threat of flooding. After proving this through research, scientist hope to test if the queens’ lower metabolism and closing of their spiracles are what allows them to survive underwater for days.

There is a protein in human sweat that may help protect against Lyme disease obtained from a tick bite. Since sweat gathers on top of the skin, it is the first line of defense against a tick bite. The protein is able to stop the growth of the bacteria that causes the disease. Unfortunately, a large amount of people have a defective version of the protein and a larger amount of it is required to stop the bacterial growth.

Based on recent research, the dwarf planet, pluto, might not have an ocean at all. Many scientists used to think pluto had an ocean due to the impact that created plutos heart, however scientists do not see how an ocean could survive over geologic time. To test this, researchers used computer stimulations to see what would happen if different rocky objects crashed into pluto. As a simulated object of such size plowed into Pluto, the impactor’s exterior vaporized but its heavy center remained intact. Scietists still do not know the answer to the question if pluto has an ocean.
