Chemistry 10-30-20 Graphing with Spreadsheets

CHEMISTRY: Today you are going to learn (or review) how to make graphs using data analysis software like Google Sheets or Excel by watching the video below at your own pace.

Here are the instructions for today, Friday. In class, you will follow along with the video instructions and make the same practice graph that I am making. This is due at the end of class. (You are going to be dreaming about graphs!!)

IMPORTANT Homework Update: A rough draft of the practice graph is due Tuesday class time. Graphing Exercise 2 is also due by class time on Tuesday. We will start on the Graphing 1 assignment next week.

You can do this assignment at school or at home with your own computer. If you use any device other than a PC or any graphing tool other than Excel or Google Sheets, you may need to modify the instructions to fit your device.

  1. Watch one of the vodcasts below for a tutorial on how to make graphs in Excel or Google Sheets.
    • My advice is to use a split screen view on the laptop with the video on one side and Excel open on the other side of your laptop screen. Watch the video and at the same time pause it as you follow along with the steps in Excel. Holler if you need me to show you how to do a split screen view. Or Google it! 🙂
    • The practice graph is due at the end of the period.2. When you begin working on the practice graph, pay very close attention to the instructions. Also, pay close attention to the sheet on How to Make a Best Fit (Scatter Plot) Line Graph in Excel 2010 – UPDATED to make sure you have all the parts of the graph covered.

      3. If you need a sample set of data to play around with, click here: Sample Data for Graphing Practice

      4. Google Sheets only: If you ever need to add subscript or superscripts to the axis labels in Google sheets, try copying and pasting whatever number you need from this set in to the axis title in Google sheets: ⁰¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉

Now go forth and conquer graphs!!

  1. I would rate my test grade a 7 because I am glad that I did better than I thought but I feel like I could have still done better

  2. I would rate my test a 7 because I did better than I expected but it wasn’t my best I’m going to try to study a little different.

  3. I didn’t do as well as I would have liked to have done. I will take better notes on the videos next time if there are videos. I will also check over my answers and make sure the scantron answers match up with the answers on the test.

  4. I would rate it a 3. I didn’t do as well as I wanted to do on the test. I will take better notes on the extra videos if we have them. I will also make sure I put plenty of details in the discussion question next time.

  5. I would rate my test grade a 4. I studied really hard but I didn’t do as good as I should have done which is really disappointing. I will start studying earlier in the week and I will not stay up late the day before a test.

  6. I would rate my test a 3 out of 5. I studied but I didn’t prepare like I should have. I didn’t give myself enough time to actually learn what I was trying to memorize.

  7. This week I struggled. I didn’t just struggle with something…. I struggled PERIOD. I did not have a fun time doing the second law lab, and I am not looking forward to doing it next week. I don’t understand why none of my labs are giving me good results, and it is very frustrating and worrying. I hope that my second and third attempts of these labs are more productive. I know that I should be learning something important through this, but it is very difficult to take my focus off of my grade. I hope that next week will be better.

  8. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 because I did pretty well on the test but I feel like I could have thought more about some of the questions to get the right answer

  9. I would rate myself a 3/5. I didn’t do as good as I thought I was going to. I didnt study as much as i shouldve and next time I will prepare better.

  10. I was pleased with myself because I did substantially better on this test than the last. Next time I’ll definitely study more and hopefully get an even higher grade.

  11. i would rate my test a 4/5 because i feel like i did pretty good and it was better than my first test. I will start to take better notes in class and to study more through out the whole lesson instead of waiting til close to the test.

  12. I would rate myself 3/5 on my test. I did good on most things but I need to do better at not making careless mistakes.

  13. I would rate myself an 8/10. I studied and did well on my test, so I will continue to do that. However, the thing that I need to change is studying more of the example questions we get from the help session.

  14. I would rate my test grade a 2/5 because I didn’t study as much as I needed to. I will start studying sooner next time and stop procrastinating.

  15. I would rate myself a 3/5 on the chapter 1 test. I was not disappointed with my grade but I feel I could’ve done much better if I had taken the proper amount of time to study. I plan to use the same methods to study for the next test but instead starting further in advance to be able to fully understand all the information.

  16. I would rate myself a 3 on this test. I would have done better if i would have studied more days in advanced. Next time i will review more information and take better notes.

  17. I’d give myself a 4/5 on the test. My grade was within the range I hoped for. I felt like I budgeted my time when I took the test better than the ones we had before, so I finished before the bell. I missed a few notes one day because of an orthodontist appointment, so I missed one question because I didn’t fully understand what was meant by heat. I should get notes when I miss them.

  18. I would rate myself a 2/5 I could of done worse but I really wish it was better on the test. I did not prepare like I should have and I did struggle some in this lesson.

  19. I would rate my test performance a 6/10 because I studied hard enough to pass but didn’t look into my notes enough to get some of the multiple choice problems correct.

  20. I rate myself a 3/5. I should have prepared better with more application questions and I need to better organize my notes. I was happy with my grade, but I know I could have done a lot better. I plan to use more student resources from the textbook website for the next test.

  21. I would give myself a 6/10. I made an okay grade, but I could have done better. I made a lot of careless mistakes and didn’t have all the notes I should’ve. Next time I will study more but also make sure I have the information in the first place

  22. This week, I would rate myself a 4/5. I made a good grade on the test, but I know I could’ve done better and that REALLY bugs me. I’ll have to work even harder and practice my critical thinking on the next test so that I can achieve the grade I want.

  23. I would rate myself a 4/5.I studied really hard and I’m happy with the grade I got. I could’ve taken better notes on the videos, so I will improve that in the future.

  24. I would rate myself a 3/5 on this test. I did pretty good but I didn’t try my hardest and I could’ve done better.

  25. I would rate myself a 3/5. I studied but not as much as I could have. I made an okay grade but I could’ve made a higher one if I studied a little more. In the future I will study earlier and longer.

  26. I would rate myself a 3 because I did not do well on the test. I need to take better notes and make sure i comprehend what is taught and i will do this by going to help sessions and studying more and giving myself more time to study.
