Chemistry 9-21-20 Lab Equipment

CHEMISTRY – Hey guys! There’s lots of useful equipment for chemistry this year! Below is a slide show with an overview of the apparatus that you’ll use in the chemistry lab. Click on the black arrow to start the slideshow. For all of the equipment:

  • Know the name of each item.
  • Explain the use of each item (it’s written in white on the slide)

The second slide show is a great tour of our lab. It’s very important information about where stuff is and what it’s used for. I think you’ll find it very helpful. Both of these would be a great way to study equipment for the test! (Hint, hint!) 🙂

Lab Apparatus Assignment – Study the lab equipment in the slide show below and then, when you know them, identify the equipment in the Lab Apparatus Review on Power School. Once you start, you will have 30 minutes to complete the assignment. It’s due on Wednesday by 8:00 A.M.. If I counted right, there are 33 of them.

By the way, there is also a Practice Review on PowerSchool Learning that you can practice with before you do the actual assignment. Also, pictures of most of these are in the back of the Safety Packet.

Science In the News Assignment

How can chemistry, physics – or any other type of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) be important to your everyday life? TONS of ways, and this year we’ll be using Science In the News to research just that!

Click here for a link to the assignment – or you can also find it under the Worksheet/Handouts tab. Science in the New Assignment – REMOTE

IMPORTANT guidelines for the assignment:

  • Choose a STEM article on websites like sciencenewsforstudents.org or https://www.sciencenews.org/
  • Make sure you pick an article you find interesting and that you understand!!
  • Make sure you pick an article that you can use to answer the questions on the Science In the News sheet. If there are questions you cannot answer with the type of article you have – pick another article!!!
  • The SItN assignment must be typed . If you type, you will have to scan in your illustration.
  • You must copy/paste the actual article you used at the end of the questions you answer. Be sure and start a new page with the article. Don’t forget to highlight your article!!
  • Save/scan your assignment as a PDF. Be sure and name the file correctly.
  • Turn in the assignment to both your Google Drive Shared Folder and turnitin.com

Hon Chemistry 9-16-20 ID of Unknown Lab

HONORS CHEMISTRY – Happy use your brain day!! Can you now use what you’ve learned about density? Who is going to be your spokesperson? When is your lab going to be due? Do you need two due dates???

Physics 9-15-20 Chapter 2 Concepts

PHYSICS: Test tomorrow! You can do this!! First here’s the conceptual review we did today, bumblebees, etc.

Below today’s lesson is the vodcast of the help session from this morning – skid marks and falling flowerpots.

Are you becoming more comfortable with working problems? When selecting formulas, it’s always a good idea to ask yourself “Why?”. Why can you use this formula? Why is it legit? Why is it the best one? Is there a better route to the solution? And then, continue to practice them over and over til it starts to become second nature!

Tuesday morning Help Session

Chemistry 9-14-20 Chapter 2 Test Practice

CHEMISTRY – Wow! Is your mind blown when you think about all that you’ve learned to do in chapter 2?

Here’s our overview of the test and practice on some of the problems from this chapter.

Remember, don’t just read your notes – practice your notes, practice the problems, practice the memorization!! If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out the Chapter 2 Stuff to Know sheets under the Test Info tab. Great info!!! And continue to practice with these online games and quizzes:

Online Textbook: There are wonderful Interactive Review Games with your online text. First open chapter 2. Then click on the the Student Premium tab, then Interactive Review Games.

sciencegeek.net has great interactive quizzes with questions like I’ll ask on the test. Find the unit that corresponds to the topics we’ve been studying and begin to quiz yourself. There are answers, too!

Physics 9-14-20 A Balcony, Mountain Climber & Pelican

PHYSICS: For Monday, here’s a look at three problems (because I’m posting a recording from last year) – two students on a balcony, the first aid kit dropping mountain climber, and a quick look at the pelican that dropped it’s fish. Good job working through these today!

Chemistry 9-11-20 Relationships Among Data & Homework Problems Review

CHEMISTRY – Can you believe it? We’ve finished the chapter! Here’s a lecture from last year on what we talked about today on direct and inverse proportions AND a look at the density and conversion factor problems from last night’s worksheet. This one has extra problems too that will be great practice for the test. Below that is the vodcast of the help session from Friday morning – we went over #13 and #22a from the homework. More great practice for the test!

Speaking of tests, have you gone to the TEST Info tab yet? You might find something that will help a lot as you study!!!

Friday Morning Help Session

Chemistry 9-10-20 Using Density & Conversion Factors

CHEMISTRY – Great work with some of the extra large problems today. I’ve splice together some of the classes, so this vodcast has #14 – converting from mm3 to mL, and #16 – how many glasses of water.

This is a pic of some “high density” koi that I saw in Hawaii (at the Dole Pineapple Plantation, of all places!). Great review on density problems today, and more! Remember, in chemistry we use math as a tool, therefore we might work problems a little differently in chemistry than you do in your math class.

When working these problems, don’t forget to follow the problem solving steps we discussed today:

  • Analyze – write down what you’re given and what you’re looking for
  • Plan – write a formula where you isolate the unknown on one side by itself
  • Compute – plug in your data, numbers and units; then cancel the units, and if they cancel correctly, go on to the calculator. Be sure and give your answer what the correct units.
  • Evaluate – does your answer make sense, have you used the correct units, do you have the correct sig figs?
