Physics 2-1-17 Stability & Torque Problems Review

PHYSICS: Ohhhhhhh, so that’s how that trapeze guy stays up there! Wait – what’s the pole for?? Great opportunities for discussion and application!?!

Here’s the discussion on how stability relates to center of mass. At the end, a couple of torque problems from the homework, Torque Worksheet 1.

  1. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars for this week. On Monday, my prototype for the King of the Hill Competition traveled the farthest distance out of everyone even though it was the only car using rubber band power instead of mouse or rat trap power. I was so thankful that it worked well because I spent many long hours on Sunday building two different kinds of cars in order to see which one worked better. And, to my surprise, the rubber band car was indeed the winner over my rat trap car. I hope I can improve my design even more in order to prepare for the competition on Tuesday! Learning about torque has been very interesting and the conceptual information, for the most part, has made sense. I struggled with the problems a lot last night, but, after reattempting them tonight, I feel much more comfortable with them. However, there are still a few on both the Torque I and Torque II worksheets that I need help figuring out. I definitely need to keep practicing all the types of these problems in order to make sure that I understand their concepts fully, especially when drawing them in the first place.

  2. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 for this week. I needed to make up for my failed lightbulb project last week; therefore, I worked extremely hard on my cart to make sure it did not just run 10 cm on Monday, but it would go much farther, and it would have the correct materials and no extras. I succeeded in doing this, and it made me very happy! I am doing fairly well with the torque problems. Every now and then I will come across a confusing one because I draw the problem wrong or write a wrong value down; however, I think I am coming along nicely with them. Conceptually, I need to brush up before any serious test. The stability problems in regards to tipping seemed to make sense when applied today; however, on paper, I was still a little confused. Therefore, I need to make sure I give myself adequate study time for that. Now, I will hopefully do well on the lab on Friday, and I play to work on the Capstone lab tomorrow!

  3. I give myself a 4 out of 5 stars this week. On Monday my king of the hill car went very fast and worked as it was supposed to. I was proud of this because I spent many hours building, testing, and making modifications to my car. This weekend I plan to improve my car even more so that it may win. This week we also learned about torque. I feel like I am doing well on the torque problems and that they are different from any other problems we have worked because they involve rotation. I also learned that for an object to be in rotational equilibrium the sum of the clockwise torques must equal the sum of the counter-clockwise torques.

  4. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 for this week because I did well on torque but not on other things. I did well on the torque problems because I did not miss many. I Also I did well on the center of gravity problems. The lab I did well on, but I was not prepared for it. I should have read it first. On my car, I should have gotten ahead. I needed to work more on it because I am behind going into the weekend.

  5. This week I am going to rate myself 3/5. The week started off with my car failing miserably during the test run. Though I was able to get my car to run before school was out, I had to modify my car. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we learned about torque and center of gravity. Both easy concepts, to quickly caught on to to the conceptual basis of both. Having a bit more trouble with the problems, I struggled to finish Torgue 1 & Torque 2 worksheets. Finally, I was able to complete a running car on Friday. Overall, I believe that I had a decent week, but could have tried a bit harder.

  6. This week, I rate myself 4 out of 5. I worked really hard on my car, and got a lot done, but it didn’t go far, but I’m not worried; I have a plan. I feel like I mostly understood the torque problems, especially after the worksheet. I also thought the lab today went really well and clarified a lot of things for me.
