Chemistry 11-2-16 Binary Molecular Formulas

CHEMISTRY: Do you feel like you have letter and numbers swimming in your eyes? This is one of those times that paying attention to details is super, super important! Here’s the lecture from today on writing formulas and names for binary molecular compounds. Part of it’s really similar to what you learned to do last week for ionic compounds, but another part is totally different. Details!!

Make sure you keep everything straight. Do something that will organize all the information for you, so you won’t get confused. Also, don’t forget the lists you have to memorize – it’s getting larger and larger!! And practice, practice, practice!!!

Below the class vodcast is the help session from this morning. Holler if you’d like to have another help session!

  1. Today was discouraging for me. I am having a lot of trouble with ions and after studying the wrong polyatomic ions for today’s quiz I was very disheartened. I know I can get it though and that its just a new process for me to understand. I am going to try to work on my study habits and try to learn new ways to study the material at home.

  2. i rate myself a 4.5/5 stars this week! i conquered polyatomic ions by making a 100 on that quiz. i couldnt have done it without studying and working hard. im going to try to stay more attentive in class, and study till my brain hurts! My goal this upcoming week is to keep on pushing as hard as i can!

  3. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I think I am beginning to understand the polyatomic ions and other formulas. Next week I need to work on remembering to crossover everything that must be crossed over.

  4. This week I struggled with memorizing my polyatomic ions because I’m the biggest procrastinator ,but I think I did very well on the quiz. I also struggled with writing the chemical formulas. I am good with naming but I make simple mistakes like simplifying or putting the wrong charges. I would rate myself a 2.5/5 this week because I struggled a lot ,however; I understand the basics of how to write a chemical formula. I will try to memorize my polyatomic ions better and practice writing a chemical formula without making careless mistakes.

  5. This week I have been struggling with all the new material we have been learning about writing chemical formulas. I have watched some of the vodcasts and read through my notes so that I have a better understanding of how to write the formulas. I also went to the help session this week, which helped a lot.

  6. I rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I some what struggled with the formula naming and writing formulas, but I’m starting to understand a little better.

  7. This week in Chemistry, I would rate myself a 3/5 stars. When we learned polyatomic ions, I was having trouble at first. When I practiced it more throughout the week, I started to feel more comfortable with them! This week I learned that when you practice a concept correctly, you will get slowly more skilled at it! Hopefully next week in Chemistry I can rate myself higher!

  8. This week has been rough with me having to learn the right ions. At first I was getting the hang of it with seperating the names and figuring out their charges but I apparently studied the wrong ones for the quiz. I would rate myself a 2/5 for this week

  9. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week. i feel like i have a good comprehension of polyatomic ions, i know that learning them last year in IPC helped A LOT. I learned this week to not over think it and doubt myself, i got mixed up on homework because i was just over thinking it, and not having confidence. i also learned that prefixes are subscripts, not charges, that rule helps a lot with knowing what to do next.

  10. Failure: This week I struggled with memorizing all the information given to us this week in the time needed, even though I studied, I was not comfortable when taking the quiz. I struggled with automatically knowing the formulas and names without thinking for a few seconds. This apprehension caused me to not be able to finish in the time given. I need to work on my time management skills and make sure to know all the information without any hesitation so that I can prevent myself from not finishing any of the quizzes to come.
Success: Although I missed Monday, which was a vital day of notes, I still was able to grasp the information we learned this week, and apply it when working on the homework assigned for us each night. Also since I did well on the worksheet, I feel like that shows that I have grasped that information well this week!
    Rate: 3/5

  11. this week i struggled to memorize all the polyatomic ions but i will work on them and do better on the next quiz.another thing i had problems with crossing over and showing ratios but i worked at it and now i understand it better.

  20. I would rate myself 4/5 this week. I struggled with the memorization. I felt as if I did better the more I used them though.

  21. This week in chemistry i would rate myself a 2/5. I did well on the polytomic ions quiz, I believe. I also have the monotomic ions down but with these new chemical formulas we are having to learn to do, I am really struggling. I hope to learn and understand them better soon so I can do well on the pre-test and the work we do in class so I don’t get left behind.

  22. This week in chemistry I struggled with the binary compounds and figure out how to cross over. I will better myself with this concept as I know it is require for the rest of the year. Looking forward to another week in chemistry!

  23. I rate myself this week a 4/5 because I did well on the formulas with crossing over i just have to make sure I go over my work for careless errors

  29. This week in chemistry was tough for me. I was having a lot of trouble trying to memorize the polyatomic ions and I am still struggling with writing chemical formulas. The mock pre-test made me more confident that I am able to write the chemical formulas but it also made me realize that I need to practice using the stock system and start memorizing the common substances.

  30. I rate myself a 2/5. I’ve had a bad week overall. I didn’t understand naming formulas. I need to go back and review my notes.

  31. This week was kinda weird with the Spiritual Emphasis week going on but I think I did well this week. I still need to work on making sure I get the chemical formula charges right though

  33. I didn’t do great this week on the formulas but I’m starting to get the hang of it. I feel like I need to work on doing my homework. Overall I give myself a 3/5.

  34. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. I struggled at first on working the compounds and their formulas. I was able to figure out how to work them better at the help session. I also struggled on memorizing the polyatomic ions and applying them to the compound formulas. I am going to spend more time memorizing them so i will know them for the future.

  35. This week i would rate myself a 3/5. At the beginning of the week when we learned about polyatomic ions, I was overwhelmed and was very confused on how to write these formulas. As the week has gone on I feel like I understand polyatomic ions better, but I still struggle with writing out the formulas for it and I will continue working on it and get better.

  36. I would give myself a 2/5 stars this week. All the new information has overwhelmed me and I have struggled A LOT with the chemical formulas. The mock pretest we worked on today and the formula homework has helped a ton though. I think I slowly am understanding it better but I need to review my notes a lot more frequently; the littlest rules I forget are causing the biggest mistake.

Hopefully next week will be better.

  37. This week would be a 4/5 for me because I think I’m getting the hang of naming and writing chemical formulas. Although, I had a lot to improve on in the chemical formula worksheet. Altogether, I need to study and prepare myself well for the upcoming test.

  38. This week I struggled so much with memorizing the polyatomic ion’s but then got my stuff together and learn all of them very well I’ve recovered well I’d rate myself a four out of five for this week. I felt like I did very well on the quiz and improved a lot from our worksheet To the exercise we did in class in class Friday.

Overall i would rate myself a 4/5. Could you review over how to write the chemical formulas and simplifying them?

  43. This week i felt i gat a very good grasp on polyatomic ions and formulas. I struggled a little bit on monday, but by friday, i had it down good. one thing i could work on would be remembering to put if the charges are positive or negative.

  44. I would rate myself a 3/5 for the week. I struggled early learning to write chemical formulas but I got the hang of it. I learned to always pay close attention and write down every step you tell us while taking notes.

  45. This week, I missed 2 days. I feel confident with the polyatomic ions and the acids, but I am at a disadvantage because of my absences. Thankfully, I have the videos to help me catch up.
