Hon Chemistry 3-1-16 Intermolecular Forces

HON CHEMISTRY: Well, here it is, the very last lecture from chapter 6 – intermolecular forces. (Don’t forget they’re also called van der Waals forces!) Tons of application, from bugs walking on water to little fishes breathing dissolved oxygen.

  1. This week in Chemistry, we have wrapped up an interesting chapter about atomic bonds, and we have a test on it tomorrow. We also have a paper chromatography lab Friday, which I am excited to see what that is about. I am easily able to apply the concepts we learned in class for discussion questions for the test thanks to extra practice. I am still having some trouble getting the lewis structure shapes, types, and dipoles down, but I’m sure just doing more of those types of problems will fix that. I’ll be sure to study hard for our test tomorrow!

  2. This week, I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars based on my performance in class. This morning at the help session, I realized that I needed to study the smaller concepts and learn how to apply intermolecular forces. I was reminded about how molecular geometry can affect a molecule’s electronegativity. Also, I feel like the lightbulb activity helped me to understand how ionic compounds disassociate in water and carry electric current.

  3. This week I struggled with dipoles and how to draw them. I practiced while I was studying, so I hope that helped me on my test. I really understood how to draw ionic bonding which was a triumph for me this week. I would rate myself at 3 out of 5 stars this week. The test was a little bit harder than I thought it would be after all my studying, but I hope I did good!

  4. This week I would rate myself a 3 out of 5. I prepared well for my test and was ready for every type of discussion question so it was easy when they were in the multiple choice. I also understood ionic bonding very well. However, I was a little confused on the molecular geometry part of Lewis structures and I think that will be the reason my test grade might not be as high as I want it.

  5. This week i struggled with dipoles but after practice I feel like I am a lot better at them. A triump for this week would be completing the activity we did with the light bulb and learning how ionic bonds can conduct electricity. I would rate myself 4/5 this week because I was able to apply everything I know and feel like I did good on my test.

  6. This week in chemistry I enjoyed learning about intermolecular forces. Though i struggled at first, I really enjoyed learning how the intermolecular forces came into everyday life. I feel like i studied well and im excited to see what my grade is on this test. I give myself a 4 out of 5 stars because i studied well and i also struggled a little bit on some of the topics.

  7. This week in chemistry I rate myself a 3 of 5. I really liked ionic bonding and drawing lewis structures. Although I struggled learning some of the forces and bond differences I thought I did with the drawing it. It was a good week too because our girls are going to state which is so fun and exciting. Overall it was a good week in Chem.

  8. This week in class I rate myself 4 out of 5. I give myself this rating because I studied hard for the test and did well and as busy as the week was I was able to stay on top of things and get all my labs and extra credit material done on time. I would say one thing that I did not do well this week was my make up lab because I did not come prepared. Next time I will make sure to have all my material ready before class next time!

  9. This week we were preparing for our test we took on yesterday. I felt like I did pretty well on the test, but despite studying hard for this test I was wrong. We did a lab today. That was really fun! I would rate myself a 3/5 this week.

  10. This week I would rate myself a 4/5 because I thought I studied hard for the test and did well on the discussion question and the Lewis structures+ionic bonding sections of the test. However, I struggled to remember the different properties of the different kinds of bonds and the strength of those bonds. I enjoyed the activity we did today and it was fun to apply what we learned from this chapter to explain what happened during the activity.

  11. This week I rate myself a 3 out of five. I did not do my best this week on the test. I did not prepare myself like I needed to. Matthew and I worked well today on the beginning of the paper chromotography lab.

  12. This week was a three out of five for me. I wish I had been able to draw the Lewis structures on my test faster so I could’ve had more time on the multiple choice. The lab we did today (Friday) was fun, although I struggled to come up with an explanation for it. Looking forward to the forgery lab after spring break.

  13. We have done quite a bit this week in Chemistry. We have finally received The Project! I will be sure to start on it early so that I have enough time to make it good. We also did a lab this week on paper chromatography. It is very interesting how you could use concepts in Chemistry to find out if a signature is forged or not. We also have to know chemical formulas again. I am doing surprisingly well remembering them! I’ll be sure to be ready for the quiz this week.
