Hon Chemistry 11-12-15 Isotopes & Average Atomic Mass

HON CHEMISTRY: Awwww….aren’t they cute! So what do you think the average atomic mass of puppies is?

Here’s our discussion from today on isotopes and calculating the average atomic mass of isotopes. Isotopes…. not puppies. 🙂

  1. This week in chemistry went well. We learned about isotopes and average atomic mass. We also learned about how scientists have to identify atoms without seeing them by doing the sock lab. We also learned new thepries which was interesting. I rate myself a 2 of 5 for the week.

  2. One thing I struggled with this week was making the observations in the can lab. I am used to using my eyes for observations and not my other senses so I found it very difficult.

  3. I learned a lot this week about atoms and isotopes. The sock and can lab helped me understand how scientists had to discover these things. I learned some new things this week like nuclear formulas. I can also tell the amount of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom by using nuclear formulas.

  4. This week I would rate myself 3 out of 5 stars. I understand all of the models used by Rutherford and Thompson, but I am still getting the hang of finding the hyphen notation and nuclear symbol for elements. As the week goes on, Im sure that I will get better at it!

  5. I learned a lot this week about isotopes and average atomic mass. The most challenging part of this week was the sock and can lab. I was so tempted to look at the sock. I learned how to write the hyphen notation and the nuclear symbols for elements, they were really easy to figure out. I would give myself a 4 out of 5 for this week.

  6. This week I struggled trying to find out what was in my can in the sock and can lab I’m not used to having to use only my senses and not my eyes. A triump for this week was getting the lab we did on the computer done in time. I would give myself a 4/5 this week because I understand everything but I can’t seem to remember which one is Z and which one is A.

  7. I truly enjoyed this week in chemistry. It was fun to learn the stories behind the discovery of the atom as well as researching the various parts that make up the parts of an atom. I was, however, left unsatisfied upon learning that we don’t know why there is less antimatter than there is matter. Very concerned as to what this means for the future of our universe…is it reactive enough to combine with Doctor Who’s dimension? Do excessive amounts of antimatter cause scurvy? Four out of five for this week, and hoping to learn more about this antimatter thing in the future.

  8. Although I missed the first two days of this week, I was fortunately able to keep up with all the assignments. The take home was fairly easy compared to others. I struggled with remembering which achievements belong with which scientists. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week.

  9. This week I felt that I excelled in writing in the hyphen notation and the nuclear symbols of isotopes. The take home lab was simple and the particle research was interesting. I would rate myself a 4/5.

  10. The sock and can lab was a success. I really enjoyed the lab and learning how scientists discovered particles. I thought that I did really well on the lab and making conclusions about the items.

  11. This week I struggled with the sock and can lab. I was able to figure out the items but I did have a hard time coming up with observations without using my eyes. To fix this I need to become more observant of the noticeable but also the stuff that is not as noticeable.

  12. This week I learned a lot in chemistry about isotopes and the makeup of an atom. I liked the sock and can activity, even though making observations was challenging at times. I would rate myself at a 2 this week because I understand what we are learning, but I made a bad grade on my test from last week.
