Chemistry 9-22-17 Fundamental Science Skills Graphing Activity

Quick – list 20 things you remember from the 8th grade about interpreting and reading graphs! Not to worry – today you’re going to begin reviewing those important concepts and techniques. Here is your assignment for Friday:

IMPORTANT: Today’s assignment is one that you will have to complete at school. The program is on the school laptops in our room and on the computers in the computer lab.

  1. Find the “Fundamental Science Skills” program on your computer.
  2. In the Graphing Skills section, click on “Graphing Data Points.” Read through and practice in each section VERY CAREFULLY!
  3. After you have completed each review section, go to the exam and complete it.
    • You must enter your name in the exact format you do when you save/title a lab – including the title of the activity.
    • IMPORTANT: Your answers and the format of it all must match exactly with the correct answer to receive credit. (Sometimes being exactly correct is extremely important!)
    • Click on “Check Your Answers.” When you have 100% accuracy, bring your lap top to me to check your Check Answers Results Sheet. If you are doing the assignment outside of our class period, print off your exam results sheet and bring it to me to check.
  4. The Graphing Data Points assignment is due MONDAY, by 3:30 P.M.
  5. Next, if you have time, go to the Worksheet Tab and read Graphing Exercises 1 & 2. We’ll start that MONDAY!

Holler if you have any questions!

Hon Chemistry 9-20-17 Making Excel Graphs AND Graphing Exercise 1 – 2

HON CHEMISTRY: Today you are going to begin reviewing how to make your own hand drawn graphs AND learn how to make graphs on Excel by watching the video below at your own pace.

Here are the instructions for Wednesday. (You are going to be dreaming about graphs before it’s all over!)

IMPORTANT: The video you will watch has the assignments backwards – Ex 1 is now Ex 2, and Ex 2 is now Ex 1. What this basically means is that you will make the two graphs first – printed rough drafts of both are due Friday in class. And then, you will do the online graphing worksheet last – it must be submitted by this coming Monday, 8:00 A.M.

You can do this assignment at school or at home with your own computer. If you use any device other than a PC or any graphing tool other than Excel, you may need to modify the instructions to fit your device.

  1. Under the worksheet tab, open these three graphing handouts:
  2. Watch the vodcast below for further instructions on the assignment AND for a tutorial on how to make graphs in Excel.
    • When you get to the part of the video where I tell you that you can stop watching the tutorial, if you want to stop and work on your own, be sure and FIRST scroll to the end of the vodcast (at about minute 28:40) for hints on competing Exercise 2.
    • My advice is to use a split screen view on the laptop with the video on one side and Excel open on the other side of your laptop screen. Watch the video and at the same time pause it as you follow along with the steps in Excel. Holler if you need me to show you how to do a split screen view. Or Google it! 🙂
  3. When you begin working on the Graphing Exercise 2 assignment, pay very close attention to the instructions. (Watching the video will help.) Also, pay close attention to the sheet on How to Construct a Line Graph, and How to Make a Best Fit (Scatter Plot) Line Graph in Excel 2010 – UPDATED.
  4. Now go forth and conquer graphs!!

Holler if you have any questions!

Chemistry 9-14-17 Chapter 2 Test Practice & Help Session

CHEMISTRY – Wow! Is your mind blown when you think about all that you’ve learned to do in chapter 2? How have you begun studying?

Here’s practice on some of the problems from this chapter. Since we were having trouble with the audio, I’m posting an old vodcast from last year. I’ve also posted below that an old help session that will have some extra practice. Remember, don’t just read your notes – practice your notes, practice the problems, practice the memorization!!

If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out the Chapter 2 Stuff to Know sheets under the Test Info tab. Great info!!! And continue to practice with these online games and quizzes:

Online Textbook: There are wonderful Interactive Review Games with your online text. First open chapter 2. Then click on the the Student Premium tab, then Interactive Review Games.

sciencegeek.net has great interactive quizzes with questions like I’ll ask on the test. Find the unit that corresponds to the topics we’ve been studying and begin to quiz yourself. There are answers, too!

God bless you as you study! I’ll be praying for you!!

Physics 9-13-17 Another Rocket Problem

PHYSICS: Was it a little easier thinking through this rocket problem? Here’s a look from a past year – and another look at the “single splash” problem as a bonus.

If the rain holds off, we’re headed to the parking lot tomorrow. Test Friday.

Physics 9-12-17 Pelican, Rocks, Rockets & Chapter 2 Concepts

PHYSICS: First from today, an overview of some of the conceptual stuff. Then a look at the several of the problems from last night – #36, 37, 40, and 47 I think.

Are you becoming more comfortable with working problems? When selecting formulas, it’s always a good idea to ask yourself “Why?”. Why can you use this formula? Why is it legit? Why is it the best one? Is there a better route to the solution? And then, continue to practice them over and over til it starts to become second nature!

Chemistry 9-12-17 Relationships Among Data

CHEMISTRY – Can you believe it? We’ve almost finished the chapter! Here’s the lecture from today on direct and inverse proportions.

Speaking of tests, have you gone to the TEST Info tab yet? You might find something that will help a lot as you study!!!

Also, don’t forget to check out the Interactive Review Games with your online text and also the review at sciencegeek.net. Great practice with both memorization, concepts and problem solving!

God bless you as you study this week! I’m be praying for you!!

Hon Chemistry 9-11-17 Relationships Between Data & Test Info

HON CHEMISTRY – You’ve learned to gather the “pieces of the puzzle”, now it’s time to put them together so they can have meaning! The recording today had no audio, BUT here’s an overivew of direct and inverse proportions from last year. Just brief info for the test for now, and we’ll put it to practice in a couple of activities after the test.

By the way, speaking of tests and putting thing together, how’re you doing on these last problems? Are you able to pull together all we’ve done in this chapter?

I found an old recording of a help session from last year and I posted that below as well. Conversation factor problems and maybe a density one or two? CAUTION: The first ten minutes or so are a bit scratchy – I think the mic kept getting caught on my shirt!

As you study, remember, don’t just read your notes – practice your notes, practice the problems, practice the memorization!! Be sure and check out the Chapter 2 Stuff to Know sheet and the chapter 2 study suggestions sheet. They are under the Test Info tab. God bless you! I’ll be praying for you!!
