HON CHEMISTRY – Are you ready to celebrate what you’ve learned? God bless you as you study! Here’s our overview of chapter 1 and the test – good stuff!!
Make sure you aren’t just reading your book and notes. First, memorize the facts, then go back and make sure you can apply the concepts. Study examples, make your own examples, practice making questions. And don’t forget, if you are getting lost with everything you need to know, or if you’re not sure how to study, Chapter 1 Stuff to Know Sheet under the Test Info tab.
Also remember there are great review games that are in the Student Premium section of the online textbook. You can do this – I believe in you! I’m praying for you!!

How do you determine if a reaction is endothermic or exothermic when both of them are happening simultaneously? Whichever process has the most energy involved will take the title of the reaction.
I found a shiny rock on the side of the road and it was warm. I wonder what kind of substance it is? Judging by the physical attributes of the substance, I can conclude that this substance is conductive of heat and a metal. Also I see that it is not a mixture.. Upon buffing it and making it shinier, I noticed that it has a brownish color. I now know that this is a pure substance and most likely an element that fits into the metal category. After taking note of all these observations, I conclude that this substance is the element copper.
If you are given the density and weight of an object, what kind of properties have you been given? The density of an object does NOT depend on the object’s mass, so you have an intensive property. However, the weight of the object DOES depend on the object’s mass, so you also have an extensive property.
If I found a solid white substance in a classroom how could I determine what type of substance it was? If i pick up the solid I can see that it smooth, shiny, a good conductor, and a solid at room temperature. I tried to use magnetism to separate it, but it didn’t pull apart. I have concluded that this is a metal. I then determined it was not a mixture, and instead a pure substance. I placed the white substance in a container of water for a day, and when I came back it had rusted on the edges. I could then determine that the pure substance was the element, iron.
Why didn’t the cup filled with water not burn in our lab? And why did the top part of the cup burn above the water? The cup transferred the energy to the water and the top part of the cup burned, because it had nothing to transferred its energy too. The water was not filled up to that part
why didn’t the cup with water burn? It is because flame from the Bunsen burner flame transferred th heat to the cup and then the cup transfer its heat to the water inside the cup. This is because energy always travels to a place with less energy.
Ask: What does it mean if a substance can not be separated by physical means? Matter can be classified as mixtures and pure substances. If a substance can not be evaporated, filtered, distilled, centrifuged, paper chromatography, decanting, ect. , then it can either be a compound or an element but is a pure substance. An element is the simplest form of matter, while a compound is 2+ elements chemically combined and can not be separated by chemical means. The ways that a pure substance can be separated through chemical means is electrolysis, heating, ect.
How do you determine if a reaction in endothermic or exothermic. You can see what the reaction by what the energy reaction is. If the reaction gives out energy to the surroundings then it is an exothermic reaction while if the reaction absorbs heat from the surroundings then the reaction is endothermic.
How do you determine if a physical or chemical change occured? You can tell if its a chemical change if a new substance was formed, gas was released, or a color change. A physical change would be if the physical appearance changes but it is still the same substance.
Which is hotter, a cup of boiling water or a bath tub of boiling water? They both have the same temperature because they are both boiling. But the bathtub of boiling water is hotter because it has more heat. Heat is measured by the mass and the temperature of a substance. Because the bathtub of boiling water has more mass, it has more heat than the cup of boiling water.
What does it mean to be able to separate a substance by chemical means but not physical? It means that the substance is a pure substance, not a mixture. This means processes like evaporation, distillation, filtering, decanting, and more physically cannot separate the substance into smaller parts. This also tells us that the type of matter of the substance is a compound. Since it can be separated by chemical means like electrolysis and decomposition that tells us that it is made up of different parts or elements, also showing us it is not an element.
What has more potential energy, Jessie on a ladder or Steve standing on the ground? Both are same weight. Jessie has more potential energy because she is higher than Steve. Height directly affects potential energy. In other words, the higher you are the more potential energy you have. Steve is on the floor so his potential energy is a lot less.
Why did the paper cup filled with water in the lab not burn while over the fire? It was because energy always travels to the place of lowest energy, so even though the fire was making contact with the paper, the energy was being transferred to the water. Eventually the water got so much energy, the molecules broke the bonds and evaporated into the air. Once all of the water was gone, the cup could now burn since it was the lowest point of energy, and it had fuel from the fire to reach its ignition point.
How do you know whether something is a pure substance or not? If it can be broken down into different substances by chemical means than it is a compound. If it cannot be broken down any smaller by physical or chemical means than it is an element and it is the simplest form of matter.
Which has more kinetic energy, a car going 25mph going south or a truck going 75mph going north? The formula for kinetic energy 1/2 mv^2. The truck has a bigger mass and it is moving faster. Therefore, truck has more kinetic energy. The mass and velocity of an object affect the kinetic energy of an object and the truck has more of both.
Why was the cup filled with water not burned compared to the cup not filled with water. The cup filled with water did not burn, even though it had all the fuel it needed, because the energy from the fire went through the cup to the water because higher denergy always goes to a place of lower energy.
I did pretty well on the test. I did good on the multiple-choice section. I need to look at more examples while studying next time. Also, I need to look over the labs we did during the chapter.
I was happy with my test score but I could have done better. I need to study more and more deeply. I need to work on explaining things more deeply. I have need to stop making careless mistakes on things that I know
On my chapter one test, I would rate myself a 3 out of 5. I got an okay grade but I would like to do better in the future. In the future, I will try to pay more attention to detail and give more information on the essay questions.
I would rate myself a 3 on the chapter 1 test. Although I got an okay grade I felt I could’ve gotten higher. I didn’t do well on reading the questions carefully on the test. So next time to achieve a higher score, I will read the questions more carefully and try to apply what I learn to the question.
On this test I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 on this test. I got an okay grade but not a great grade. For me to improve I must practice discussion questions and answer them more deeply on my tests. I also will practice application problems.
I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 on the chapter 1 test. I got an A, and along with learning the information, that was my ultimate goal. I would still like to do better in the future by applying my knowledge on the discussion questions instead of just giving a basic answer. I also need to work on giving deep answers and not shallow ones.
I rate myself a 3/5 on the chapter 1 test. I made an okay grade, but I know I could have done better. I am improving on the multiple choice section, and I am finding the best way to study for that. I struggled on the application/discussion questions. I need to make sure I can go deeper, so I can elaborate more on the in-depth questions.
On the Chapter 1 test I would rate myself a 2 out of 5. I got an okay grade but it could have been better. I need to work on the discussion questions. I did okay on the multiple choice but I need to work some more on it.
I rate myself a 7/10 on this test. I need to do better on my discussion and getting my whole thought process out on paper. I need to learn to not just know but know why. I did great on the multiple choice and that’s because I learned from my last test and learn to study not just the material but study on how to apply it.
