Chemistry 9-28-23 Lighting a Bunsen Burner

CHEMISTRY – Great job lighting Bunsen burners today! By the way, did you happen to see a green flame when you put the copper wire in the flame? The electrons in the copper atoms were being excited and they gave off a green flame. Cool!!

Here’s something you will find useful in the future…everything you wanted to know about a Bunsen burner and how to light it. Be sure and view the slide show BEFORE you take turn in your lab sheets and take the test.

Tomorrow we’ll continue with Parts 4 & 5. Will you be ready: (Hint, hint!!) Be sure and read ahead before you come to class! Also, make double dog sure you are keeping up with the observations and answering ALL of the questions at the end of the lab on pg. 12- 17. There are a TON of them!!!

  1. Research is being conducted by Anne Schutte, a developmental psychologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and other scientists including Marcia Pescador Jimenez of Boston University to show the benefits of spending time in nature. As well as, its impact on us both mentally and psychically, such as its ability to lower blood pressure levels and improve attention span. The importance of taking care of nature so we can continue to enjoy its benefits is made clear throughout this article.

  2. A study is being conducted on the usefulness of listening to words while reading them as well. It talks about listening too what you’re reading makes your comprehension better.

  3. There was research done by a European lab Called CERN that discovered that anti-matter reacts the same way as normal matter which uphold Einstein’s theory of gravity. The way they did it was they made antihydrogen atoms and released them from a magnetic cage and observed how the a counted how many atoms went down, and they came to the conclusion that antimatter reacts the same to gravity as does regular matter.

  5. In the study, patients received DBS targeting to try to see if it helps their depression levels. DBS of the SCC is an emerging therapy that can provide for stable and long-term relief from depressive symptoms for years. The brain targets the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) in the brain. The four people with depression in this article were pulled out of deep suffering and depression.

  6. A computational geologist from Dartmouth named Alexander Cox has recently ran a computational test that suggested that massive bursts of gas ridden lava produced by the Deccan Traps eruptions were actually the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs, and the eruptions were thought to have lasted roughly a million years. He ran complex tests, took samples from the sea floor, and got together with other Dartmouth geologists to form this theory.

  7. Research done by Emily Conover states that there is a computer called frontier that is the world’s fastest that can make up to 1 quintillion calculations in one second and is used to help physics, medicine, and many other fields. The power of the computer is “unprecedented” according to Justin Whitt a frontier project director.

  8. Erica Esrick is looking into gene therapy for Sickle Cell Disease. Numerous people suffer from this disease and it is estimated that 3 in every 200 are born with this cell disease. Sickle Cell Disease is a mutation that bends the red blood cells which can cause a blockage and lead to a stroke. Our current way of treatment is a bone marrow transplant, which can risk graft-versus-host disease. Graft-versus-host disease is when the new blood cells from the original, healthy host are rejected from the infected body. Erica Esrick considers gene therapy to be better than bone marrow transplants because there’s no risk of graft-versus-host because there will be no foreign cells being introduced to the body. In gene therapy, there is no risk of the body or immune system to reject the healthy cells because the ill person will be getting their own cells back. Patients will get the old, unhealthy cells wiped from radiation. By eliminating the old cells, this gives the healthy cells a fighting chance to spread.

  10. This week I think I did well in really just pushing through. I always have trouble obtaining control on my schedule and school in general , and I had many obstacles this week, but I made it! I remained calm for the most part and tried my best.

  11. Brain scans and new ai technology can detect the main ideas from things people heard, thought or watched. Then they matched patterns of brain activity to certain words and ideas, and then a decoder ranked the words from most to least likely.

  12. Scientific studies show the usefulness of being out in nature has on your body and mind. Although most people think this relates to playing sports outside but no just the act of being in nature via walk or standing is better for your help. The studies and experiments show that people who walk outside can breathe easier not only that but can also better control stress and move around once inside.

  13. There is scientific research on deep brain stimulation or DBS, according to the research done DBS is supposed to help treat mental diseases. The stimulation sends pulses of electricity through the brain and can have an effect of reseting the brain.

  14. Scientist are studying that spending time in green spaces can provide health benefits. Researchers are saying people that spend more time in nature breathe cleaner air. They also say that when people are in a city there brains have to work harder

  15. Scientists have recently studied about how orcas and whales blow air through a unique structure in their nasal passages. They communicate from their nose but they make noises in three different vocal registers: falsetto, chest, and vocal fry.

  16. a massive black hole has been confirmed in recent news!
It has been under observation since 2019 but scientists recently discovered it was rotating proving that it is real and could be potentially dangerous.

  17. There has been a study on CWD (Chronic Waisting Disease) in deer population in recent years. They found it started in the north east of Mississippi. It is speculated that it was started when a small group of deer were illegally transported from up north to a high fence or other form of hunting camp and said deer ofcourse had CWD. CWD has spread though almost half the state at this point but game and fish is doing many things to stop this spread including banning feed piles and feeders. The only form of baiting allowed is food plots such as planted corn. Testing is available and it is believed to have no effect on humans.

  18. Recently scientists have discovered that it is very possible that dinosaurs did not go extinct by an asteroid, but by volcanic eruptions. The computers and research from the Scientist concludes that these amazing creatures were killed by colossal burst of gas from the “Deccan Trap Erruptions”. These eruptions lasted many long years and covered most of it if not all of the land and led to the extinction of an entire species.

  19. Scientists are studying how rats playfulness relies on cells in its brain. Scientists are also studying how stem cells can help grow lab grown organshttps://www.snexplores.org/

  20. This week I would rate myself a 5/5 for knowing what to do during the lab this week. I feel like I fully understood what was going on in the lab and I was able to get the equipment for the lab quickly because I was able to identify what each thing was by the instructions.

  21. My goal for 2nd term is to do the web post every year, and ill try to meet them by setting a reminder every day for me to finish it.

  22. my goal for the second term is keep my grade up and stay between and a and b. I can meet this by studying and remembering to do the web posts and homework.
