Recently, researchers have tested some new laser technology. This laser is placed on top of a mountain, and it is used to reroute lightning. In the experiment the laser was able to bent the lightning toward a lightning rod. Technology like this could be used to protect large areas like airports, launching pads, and wind farms from lightning.

When coal mines are closed, the exposed rock can form sulfuric acid when exposed to air and water. The acid can then pull heavy metals from the rock and pollute drinking water and kill wildlife. Scientists in West Virginia are working on extracting rare earth metals from acidic mine runoff. Economically and environmentally, this would be very beneficial for the US. Rare earth metals are used in many high end electronics, and preventing toxic runoff from entering the ecosystem would be great. The scientists estimate that 600 metric tons of rare earth metals and cobalt could be processed from existing acid treatment facilities.

Scientists have developed a way for stroke victims to begin to regain control of paralyzed limbs. It works by sending electrical pulses directly to nerves in the spinal cord to stimulate movement. Furthermore, the pulses do not cause pain but instead feel more like slight vibrations.

Scientist have found a particular method of freezing ice so that it has a density closer to that of water. This allows the ice to float in the water versus on top. This is achieved by supercooling the water so that its structure is similar to that of glass. This gives it its unique properties.

Recent studies show that young crustaceans have glassy eyes to hide from predators. This is possible because their eyes house nanospheres made of isoxanthopterin, which reflects light, and the color of the reflected light matches the color of surrounding water. Researchers also believe that the size and organization of these spheres are influenced by the surrounding environment.

Scientists have recently discovered that the Milky Way may be spawning new stars at a rate that is astronomically larger than previously expected- roughly ten to twenty stars every single year. At this rate, in one million years the Milky Way will have amassed ten to twenty million new stars. This is an astounding figure because many galaxies do not produce new stars or they produce new stars at a rate so small that it does not even equate to one star a year.

This week I struggled with the T-Bot video. It was difficult to ensure that the syringes would not detach from the cords and it was also tricky to make sure the maneuvers it made were exactly where they needed to be. In spite of this, I believe we got some good footage and will be able to craft an entertaining video.
