Chemistry 2-23-23 Stoichiometry & Limiting Reactants

CHEMISTRY: So if you have 11 roller wheels, how many roller blade skates can you make? You know, really, limiting reactant is almost that simple. Well, the concept is anyway! You deal with limiting reactants in your life all the time. Now we’re just applying that same concept with chemical reactions! 🙂

Here’s our lesson from Thursday – first a review of stoichiometry problems. Then – limiting reactants. Fun times!

    1. Scientists have made new creatures called “living machines” or “xenobots” that can swim, heal themselves, and sweep up debris from skin cells that come off of frog embryos. Scientists took a clump of the skin to see what would happen, and the clumps made themselves into balls and began to swim.

    2. Scientists have found that natural icicles are different than pure water icicles. Natural icicles have a small bit of salt in them and tend to look like skinny cone with ripples in them. However, scientists have taking out all the salt from the water to make pure water icicles. They describe their irregular shape as a melt candle. They also noted that natural icicles have a blue film on the outside, which the lab made ones lack. They believe it happens this way because the way the two freeze are different.

    3. Did you know that researchers are learning how the concrete in Roman times is still holding together. Researchers have discovered that by mixing calcium oxide with ash and water, they can make cement like that of the Romans. Despite thinking that the cement could blow up when mixed, it didn’t, and testing showed that it had the ability to be fixed when there were cracks. This could change architecture and old cement ways by creating a sturdy and fixable concrete that has stood the test of time.

    5. scientist have discovered a new biomaterial that healed a animals heart after a heartattack and it could potentially heal a humans heart. a heart attack kills cardiac tissue leaving permanent damage. Scientist karen christman and her team have been trying to develop a biomaterial to stop tissue from scarring immediately. this biomaterial has been tested on pigs and rodents and it has been proven to reduce inflammation in the tissue around the heart almost immediately. concluding that this new development can possibly save lives

    6. Scientists have found that trauma can interfere with a person’s sense of time and sense of space. Researchers have found that emotions frequently dictate whether we experience time as passing fast or slow. Researchers reported in 2012 in Frontiers in Psychology that traumatic events which come with intense emotions, can cause people to experience time in slow motion.

    8. A lot of people have been burnout from how the work of covid-19 pandemic affected them. Some say burnout happens for overworking yourself while others say it’s from exhaustion disorders. The true definition of burnout is “exhaustion, cynicism and i efficacy is arbitrary” as psychologists Wilma’s Schaufeli and Dirk Enzmann say. Burnout can also be a depressive condition. But they way to help burnout is to improve to workplace around you that could of cause the burnout or cognitive training programs could help. Burnout is a serious problem that we should all try avoid or not face.

    9. Scientists have very recently discover a bio material that can help heal heart attacks! The bio material will be applied to the heart and the tissue surrounding the heart very soon after the heart attack occurs, it will hit help to restore the damaged tissue. And even though it is just for animals right now, they are hoping that it could soon be applied to human hearts

    10. I read about how icicles don’t get ripples due to a film left on the ice. This also happens because the water layer is thinner than the bumps that could form on the ice .

    11. By studying mice cells, scientists have found that intestinal tissue patches contract similarly to muscles in the digestion tract. Digestive conditions could be treated through growing these same patches in human cells. A layer of cells in our intestines take in nutrients from the food that we digest. This layer is surrounded by a layer of muscle that contracts to help mix and break down food and therefore helps with digestion.

    12. I read an article about a study on how trauma may affect our sense of time and self. From this study I learned that trauma has the ability to completely alter the way someone may look back at their life and recount previous traumatic events. There are more studies being focused towards this subject, and even some help such as offering aid towards the affected persons future, and how they will plan out the rest of their life.

    13. Scientists, in hopes of stopping heart attacks, is creating a new biomaterial in order to stop the heart attack early before it damages the tissue around the heart. Because of this, scientists used experiments on animals in order to see if there hypothesis were correct. For this reason, scientist are one step closer to being able to stop a heart attack a couple of minutes when it happens.

    14. Today I learned that after a cardiac arrest scars form only 6 hours after causing the heart to have permanent problems. Scientists are working on a biomaterial tho to help stop scarring from occurring after a heart attack. Scientist’s produced a hydrogen that will bond to a heart and help the scarring. This new material is less expensive to use also

    15. My triumph this week was remembering to read the lab before class so I knew what was going on and studying for the test ahead of time instead of trying to study all the material Thursday night.

    16. My triumph this week is reading my lab early and understanding what it was about and studying ahead for the test on friday.
