Hon Chemistry 2-10-23 Intro to Atomic Theory

HON CHEMISTRY: So how do you feel about mixing chemistry and history? Here’s the intro we did on how we ended up with the atomic theory. Had you ever heard of Lavosier, Proust, and Dalton?

Pretty impressive little theory that Dalton came up with, huh? Were you surprised as you made comparisons with the Modern Atomic Theory? Could you now take it a step further and show connections between the three laws we discussed today and Dalton’s atomic theory?

  1. My triumph for this week was being attentive in class. I have moments of distraction, but lately there have been less. 🙂

  2. This week, my triumph was managing my time. I used all of my time at home doing chemistry homework and other things a lot more efficiently than I usually do.

  3. Triumph- My triumph this week was studying for this chemistry quiz. Memorizing 17 chemical reactions was difficult but God gave me a new way to study them.

  4. In a recent study in Japan, it was found that certain fish have self awareness. This was done by placing a mirror in front of the fish and marking the mirror or the fish with different dyes. The fish would either react and try to scrape the marks off themselves, or they would not notice. This determined what species had a certain amount of self awareness and which ones lacked it.

  5. Recently, researchers have created three-dimensional maps of the protein LRP2, which filters out toxic substances in the brain, kidneys, and lungs. The protein’s ability to contract and release is dependent on the pH of its surroundings. Calcium ions hold the protein open at a higher pH, and it closes as more hydrogen ions flow inside when in contact with a lower pH.

  6. Although ice cubes are known to float in water because they’re less dense than water, scientists have discovered a new type of ice that is nearly equal density to liquid, therefore it “bobs around” in water. This new type of ice is called amorphous ice. It is able to do these things because the water molecules that make up amorphous ice are not arranged in a neat pattern like regular ice cube are.

  7. Experts believe that COVID-19 might have aged teenagers brains prematurely. During the lockdown, teens not only struggled with overall mental health, but their brains were completely altered resulting in astronomical anxiety and depression rates. Studies also show that maturation in adolescent brains were sped up, and teens brains seemed to be 3 or 4 years older than the actual age of the teen.

  8. A recent discovery has suggested that mammals that survive in groups tend to live for a longer span. The reason for this is that the mammals have aided in the others in the group to survive as a whole, instead of being individual. Reasons include defending each other against predators, bringing food for each other, and caring for eachother as one family. Most of the mammals brain tissue showed that they had hormones influenced by social interaction.

  9. Insects known to build structures such as bees and wasps have influenced a new type of drone that can 3-d print. These drones are able to create structures as tall as humans by using an expanding foam material. Once the structure is created, scan drones survey the structure in order to correct any mistakes. Just like insects, different drones do different jobs for each structure being created.

  10. In the past two years a new, deadly, syndrome has been discovered. The VEXAS syndrome has been mostly found in older men, and it was occasionally found in older women. Symptoms of this include rashes, fever, cough, inflammation of blood vessels, etc. Since not much is known about this illness, one of the only ways to test and learn more is to take samples from blood cells of those who are infected. Doctors studying VEXAS are looking for more infected patients in hopes to learn more about the illness and to help raise awareness.

  12. Rapid melting is affecting a very important ice glacier in Antartica. Scientists discovered that the ice glacier (called Thwaites Glacier) is melting quicker than it has in years. While it’s most losing ice due to warm salty ocean water, another reason has been discovered. Thwaites Glacier sits on a gravelly bed which is many meters below sea level, and is unprotected from salty, warm ocean currents. Thwaites Glacier is also even more vulnerable due to how it sits just 1 km below sea level which is where the warmest water is.

  13. Camouflage for some animals is their only way of survival from dangerous predators. For example, the Phasmatodea or more commonly known as the stick bug has an appearance uncanny to that of a stick which allows it to hide under brush for a greater chance of surviving. These chances include increasing the predators search time by 62% and dropping the rate they attack their prey by 27% all because of their ability to blend into the environment.

  14. I researched that a chemical imbalance does not explain the cause of depression. An imbalance i. the brain has been repeatedly said to the reason for depression. However, this is not true. Researchers are still not certain of the cause, but they know that a chemical imbalance ours too vague of an explanation for the complex brain. Furthermore, a scientific explanation for depression does not exist.

  15. A recent study using computer models concluded that Cat’s Eye nebula aws actually created using two dying stars. This nebula that sits almost 3,000 lightyears from earth is made up of a whirling cloud of gas and dust. Using the Hubble telescope and several ground based ones, scientists were able to determine the motions of the cloud. The two stars at the center of the nebula are both shooting out jets of plasma that are producing the rings, and it explains how some of the rings appear unfinished.

  16. Scientists have now discovered some of the effects of light pollution. They found that if you where born in an area where you could see 250 stars on your 18th birthday you would only be able to see 100. It has also been proven to have affects on heath and animals in the environment.

  17. Similar to how they observed evidence for the parts of an atom, scientists have observed evidence for the existence of a small dwarf planet in the juniper belt around our solar system. The name of the pluto sized body is Quoaor and it was recently discovered that it has rings. However, we can not see the dwarf planet, and all of the conclusions drawn are made by indirect observations and calculations.

  18. In an article written as a follow up to another article from 1973, there was a massive amount of pollution in the ocean called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This garbage patch has trillions of pieces of plastics, and other debris that animals will either get tangled in, or they’ll end up eating it. This has caused an imbalance in ecosystems, and could cause issues with the larger predators as well. Nowadays, the patch covers an area two times larger than Texas and will continue to grow.

  19. In Antarctica, around 20 scientists have been studying a 120 kilometers wide glacier called Thwaites glacier. Evidence that the Thwaites glacier has been losing more ice quickly this year than any other years is based off of the satellites measurements, but are known to be true by the scientists’ study. For this reason, the scientists have hypothesized why the glacier is melting so fast and did tests based off the hypothesis. Because of this, the scientists have slowly learned multiple reasons why the glacier has been melting quickly but not fully understood why. Because of this, other scientists that study glaciers in Antarctica can know where to begin their tests and other scientists can learn how to slowly stop global warming.
