Physics 1-5-23 Impulse-Momentum Theorem

PHYSICS So that’s why you need good running shoes! Here’s our discussion of momentum and the impulse-momentum theorem. Did you understand the relationship between force and time? Let’s see if you can put it to practice. Hmmm….

  1. New research, done by the Stanford University school of medicine, is now working to explain why teenagers tune their mothers voices yet seem to listen to everyone else. Researchers say that the adolescent brain adapts extremely quickly, and therefore gets used to one voice and begins to tune it out, therefore making new voices immediately become the focal point of attention.

  3. Though researchers had known that glass frogs were transparent on the bottom of their body, hence their name, Jesse Delia and Carlos Taboada discovered using photoacoustic imaging that when these glass frogs go to sleep 90% of their red blood cells go into special compartments in their liver to store them away. This method of conserving red blood cells allows the glass frog to become even more transparent and green, thus allowing these small frogs to effectively camouflage in trees or leaves from predators.

  4. My goals for this year as far as chemistry goes are to complete all homework and to study to retain knowledge. Last semester I completed almost all of my homework and I will continue this habit. Last semester though, I often learned the memorization just for the quizzes. I will try to learn it forever.

  5. Recently, researchers found that wolves infected with a parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, are more likely to make daring and aggressive decisions, such as becoming a leader or leaving a pack. In fact, studies conducted at Yellowstone National Park showed that infected wolves were 11 times as likely as noninfected wolves to abandon their pack and 46 times as likely to eventually become leaders. This is primarily because the parasite has the ability to transfoerm behavior through manipulating hormones.

  6. Scientists have found that more deer are hit after daylight savings than usual. Almost 10% of automobile accidents involving deer occur in the weeks following the change. This is due to the fact that after falling back an hour, more people are driving after dark. Some argue that daylight savings should be done away with for this reason.

  7. To combat the annoyance of glasses fogging up, scientists in Switzerland invented sunglasses with a thin film of gold to help. The idea is that the gold film helps absorb and heat from the sun to keep condensation, from one’s breath, from forming on the glasses. A large part of the research for this product, was actually a test of the application of nano structures to carry out specific tasks in day to day scenarios.

  8. Scientists from a university in Denmark have studied the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream and come to the conclusion that the ice stream is speeding up. From 2016 to 2019, the scientists measured the speed of the ice stream from three inland stations in Greenland. They found that, in that time span, the speed of the ice stream increased by 7 meters per year. By the end of the study, the ice stream was moving 351 meters per year. Further, the ice stream is thinning and shrinking. The scientist predict that the increased amount of ice from the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream entering the ocean will increase global sea levels by between 14 and 16 mm. This number is more than 6 times greater than previous estimates suggested.

  9. There was a mystery to how organ pipes made their frequency. A physicist, Herman von Helmholtz, had made a equation that showed how pipe length related to its frequency. Somehow his equation was always off by a constant factor. Recently a discovery was made that a vortex air cap is formed above the tube and lengthens the tube by that constant factor thus solving the mystery of why Helmholtz equation was always wrong.
