Scientists have discovered that people in ancient times have also eaten bugs, which helped their brains grow bigger. They have also seen that this diet can be better for the planet, as insects take up less space and still have all the vitamins and nutrients we need. Scientists are now working on how to best sell people on eating insects normally, along with new seasoning.

  2. Scientists have been studying what hydrogel is. They find it very interesting because the hydrogel looks like a solid but it is actually mostly water. Their question is why is there no water coming out if the gel. This is because the polymers in the substance hold on to the molecules tightly. Because of the way the polymers are structured they form a substance that has the properties of water and it can keep its shape.

The scientists preformed an experiment that lasted for 3 years. And with results they found out that people with high blood sugar, diabetes, and other conditions were more attractive to mosquitoes than other people. This was because they produced carboxylic acids at a higher level than usual people. The scientists hoped that they could research if this was a world wide problem.

  5. Scientist have a theory that being sleep deprived is linked to people being less generous. To test this theory a team on scientist brought in 23 adults into the lab for 2 nights, one night they slept and stayed awake for the next night. In the mornings of both nights they were asked on their likelihood to help a stranger. The morning where the particapants havent slept. 80% of the people were less likely to help a stranger than when they had a full night of sleep.

  6. Scientist wonder if we should begin using a genetic weapon against malaria- carrying mosquitoes. The weapon is a self replicating portion of DNA (AKA a gene drive) and is a tool expected to stop mosquitoes from spreading various diseases. Researchers took their study to Africa (where Malaria is most common) to gather statistics and prove how badly this disease can effect people. Though vaccines have been made, it is proven that mosquitoes are developing resistance to insecticides. This topic is very controversial and heavily debated among scientist.

A study was done where they used a variety of music, like Mozart and Lady Gaga, and used an accelerometer to track their movements. They can’t say for sure if the rats can actually comprehend the music, or if they are just reacting to it, but they were definitely making movements that seemed to be to the beat.

    In 2021, an analysis of plant and animal DNA from sediment samples from the Arctic, spanning about the last 50,000 years, suggested that mammoths survived in north-central Siberia as late as about 3,900 years ago (SN: 1/11/22). That’s much later than when the youngest mammoth fossil found in continental Eurasia suggests the animals died out; it dates to about 10,700 years ago. Only on Wrangel Island off the coast of Siberia and the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea were mammoths known to have survived later.

  9. I read about how scientists have decided that daylight savings time isn’t healthy for us. Kenneth Wright talked about how there is no change in the amount of daylight we receive during daylight savings. What he concluded is that by setting our clocks forward an hour we are changing our schedules to not fit with the sun, like when our clocks reach noon the sun is not at its highest point. Wright pointed out that our bodies are biologically wired to “rise” and “set” with the sun. His conclusion was that permanent standard time would be the healthiest way to go.

  10. Hydrogel is a useful material you may never have heard of. Hydrogel is important for medical devices that stays in contact with the body. The reason why hydrogel can stay connected is because the molecules holds on to water and sticks to it. With people wearing contacts and the eye comes in contact with oxygen, the contact would block the flow of the oxygen to the eye. The lenses depends on hydrogel to allow oxygen to pass through normally.

  11. A new study has shown that the COVID-19 vaccines are poised to go against the highly contagious omicron variant. Health officials approved the first renovated mRNA-based shots on September 1 and said the renovated vaccines are ready to be given out within days. The director of the CDC said that the vaccines will be able to restore protection from previous vaccinations and provide protection against newer forming variants. Moderna and Pfizer have invented boosters that include instructions for coming up with the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants’ spike protein as well as the omicron spike protein that was originally occurring in the first place. The boosters were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on August 31. Now the CDC recommends that people 12 years and older who are fully vaccinated get the booster. The CDC also says that the chances of serious side effects are very rare and uncommon. One serious side effect that could happen is heart inflammation which is also called myocarditis but the CDC has only recorded 131 myocarditis cases out of more than 126 million boosters given in the U.S. The CDC also states that the risk of heart inflammation is 1.8 to 5.6 times higher after you have been infected with COVID-19. Waiting two months after your last COVID-19 vaccine can lower the risk of heart inflammation tremendously.

The reason daylight savings affects this issue so much is because more drivers are driving in the dark and more deer are out at night it is the worst timing. If we avoided the daylight savings switch it could save up to 37,000 deer per year !

  14. Many know that forests help stop global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide, however this isn’t the only way forests are protecting against global warming. The forests release water vapor, and push hot air up and away, so that it helps cool the earth. Trees also create aerosols that reflect the sun away too. Scientists have helped us learn how to appreciate forests more because of their benefits to earth, especially when protecting against global warming.

  15. Daylight savings time occurred on November 6. DST switches an hour of sun to an hour of darkness in the evening. There is no technical time change just a change in how we see time in a day. This can be a problem since human cycles are based of the light and darkness of the day. Many downsides of DST include sleep loss, heart attacks, and a higher risk of dying in a hospital post stroke have been proven to be linked with the usual change. Changing the rules of “DST” could even prevent dear collisions. This is because of the off balance of sleep that is only a problem because of the inhuman change of our rhythm.

  16. Scientists sold a dinosaur skeleton that may have been a big mistake. Scientists didn’t realize at the time how much more they could study the skeleton. They also want it back because they say it belongs in a museum.

  17. I did my webpost on a research topic on the cure for intoxication. Some researchers have been able to lower the intoxication time in rats by injecting them with vitamin B3 and B5 with cystine. I personally don’t think it would beneficial for us to find a cure to a hangover because that could cause more people to think they can drink more consistently and then just cure the hangover the next day.
