Chemistry 9-27-22 Lighting a Bunsen Burner

CHEMISTRY – Great job lighting Bunsen burners today! By the way, did you happen to see a green flame when you put the copper wire in the flame? The electrons in the copper atoms were being excited and they gave off a green flame. Cool!!

Here’s something you will find useful in the future…everything you wanted to know about a Bunsen burner and how to light it. Be sure and view the slide show BEFORE you take turn in your lab sheets and take the test.

Next week we’ll continue with Parts 4 & 5. Be sure and read ahead before you come to class! Also, make double dog sure you are keeping up with the observations and answering ALL of the questions at the end of the lab on pg. 12- 17. There are a TON of them!!!

  1. This week I did well with learning how to use a Bunsen burner. What I mean by that, is how to use it accurately and safely. Before being able to walk it through class on how to do it and what everything is, I would have done it incorrectly somehow. With the in-class response and partner help, I was able to correctly UNDERSTAND how to use the Bunsen burner and what it is used for.

  2. This week I have triumphed in our class. I used to struggle with accurately measuring, knowing how many sig figs, and where to round. After a few weeks of practice though I am able to confidently measure and round to sig figs. I was continue to triumph by learning the material, and finding better ways to study before a test.

  3. This week I have triumphed in pre lab quizzes. I have had to actually read and highlight important parts of the lab, and know the parts of lab equipment before the lab begins. This is different for me because it requires preparation and lots of hard work. It also requires me to be prepared for questions and time limitations in the lab.

  4. This week my triumph has been keeping up with all my assignments in chemistry. I have to done really well with reading and highlighting everything just like the syllabus says. I have also done well answering the questions in the lab packet. I also did well with lighting the Bunsen Burner and now know how to safely light one.

  5. I have triumphed over getting the labs done and doing the labs right in class. I have done well on the labs because I read the labs before class and also had a partner to help with the steps I was having trouble on. With both reading before class and my partner, I can get through this week doing labs pretty good.

  6. This week I have triumphed in learning how to work the Bunsen Burner accurately and safely. In the past, I have struggled with learning how to use new instruments, not because they were hard to use but because I didn’t study the material before I got to the lab. On this instrument I did research before the lab and learned how to use it very quickly because I read the material before I came into the lab.

  7. This week I triumphed with not being so scared or anxious about the lab. The reason is because I read through all the instructions and trusted in myself that God has my back and that no matter what, I tried my best. I also did do very well in the lab this week with the help of my partner and me trusting myself.

  8. My triumph this week is figuring out where all the lab equipment is and how to work a Bunsen burner. This is my triumph this week because before I could not remember where everything was, but now I do. I also could not originally light a striker in order to light the Bunsen burner, but now I can.

  9. My triumph this week was correctly using a Bunsen burner safely and looking at my syllabus before class. This week i have been prepared coming to class because i have read my syllabus and understood the assignment for the day.

  17. The triumph that I accomplished this week in chemistry was being able to communicate efficiently with my lab partner as we got finished successfully filtrating and evaporating. Our lighting of the Bunsen burner was more orderly and organized then the first time we lit it. In addition, our transition between filtrating and evaporating our filtrate was more smoother and tidy. Our result was we finished the lab on time.
