CHEMISTRY: It’s been a great week – you’ve accomplished a lot! Here’s the assignment for today and information on the homework for this weekend.
Lab Apparatus Assignment – Identify the equipment in the Lab Apparatus Review Assignment on Canvas. On the Chemistry Canvas page, scroll down to Assignments and you’ll see the assignment. Once you start the assignment, you will have 20 minutes to complete it. It will count as a lab grade. It’s due on today (Friday) by the end of class. If I counted right, there are 65 questions – 33 pieces of equipment. IMPORTANT: It’s a great idea to do the practice at least once before you do the actual assignment.
Lab Safety Contract –Since we’ll be in lab so much, it’s important that you write your own lab safety contract. Here’s how you do it::
- From the first couple of pages of the Safety Packet that you got in class (or it’s also here under the Lab tab), hand write the lab safety statements as your contract.
- They must be handwritten on notebook paper. You only have to write the first part of the rule that is bold. There are 29 in all and they almost all start with “I will…”.
- At the end of your contract – after the last statement, hand write the following statement at the bottom: “I agree to abide by these rules.” Then sign underneath and date it.
- Scan your final signed document as a PDF and submit it into your Chemistry Shared Folder. The assignment name is Lab Safety Contract.
- IMPORTANT: You must have this safety contract submitted to be able to participate in lab for the rest of the year! Due Monday!
I read an article about bison in Yellowstone National Park. The bison are in danger because of near by disease carrying cattle. Biologists don’t know what causes the disease or how it started, but buffalo are being hurt because of it. What we can do to help is not stomping all over their land and habitat.

Parasites are going extinct at a rapidly alarming rate. Scientists estimate by the year 2070 one third of all parasites will be extinct.

Scientists have figured out a way to 3-d print wood. They relied on what had formally been an obstacle being how damp woods warps when it dries. The team printed their shapes at different speeds and using different patterns to lay down the ink.

Parasites are important to biological studies: however a third of the species are expected to be extinct by 2070. Many scientist such as Chelsea Wood are trying to preserve these important organisms.

Parasites make up 4 in every 10 species in the world, however a 2017 study estimated that because of the climate change, up to one-third of all parasite species could become extinct by the year 2070. Even though many do not like parasites because of their diseases, parasites are a needed organism in our planet, because they represent a diverse collection of living things are can be beneficial.

The James Webb telescope found a hint of carbon dioxide on another planet in another solar system. Astronomers say that there could be more planets with green house gases as well.

Some parasites are very beneficial. There are parasites that control the population of wildlife species and help move food and nutrients through ecosystems.

I read on how the boa constrictor can squeeze its prey without strangle themself. Snakes can move apart of there ribs to breathe throw there lungs. By doing this it allows the boa to squeeze and not suck the life out of itself.

Researches and new data reveals that the Milky Way original nucleus is still there. Which came about more than 12.5 billion years ago. The Milky Way stars ages which according to Hand-Walker Rix of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy are more than 12.5 billion years old. Now astronomers know new information about our galaxy’s birth and the evolution of it.

I read an article about Saturn’s rings and tilt might have come from one missing moon. Saturn might have not had rings and a tilt when dinosaurs were still on the planet. The gravity on the moon would’ve helped the planet not tilt, and if the moon went missing then it would mess up the gravitational pull.

I struggled this week with procrastinating preparation for our test. I will address this by managing my time better as well as freeing myself from distractions.
Science just came up with a new invention called the stick-on ultrasound. Each patch cost about $100 dollars to make. This new invention can make it a lot easier for doctors to examine organs for damage, diagnose cancer or even track bacteria. I think this is a great new addition to the medical field.
