Hon Chemistry 8-17-22 SI Measurements

HON CHEMISTRY – Great job today! So is all the info on SI measurements starting to come back to you? Here’s the lecture from today – our discussion of fundamental and derived units. I’m sure it’s mostly review from your physical science days, but it’s a great opportunity to refresh what you’ve learned and to get ready to begin using it!

Did you remember the prefixes and units? Start work on memorizing them NOW – SI quantities, units, and SI prefixes. For the prefixes, also make sure that you can tell me how many of something in the larger one. (That’s what I explained in class.)

  1. This week I’ve struggled with focusing in class and procrastinating. I’m still not used to being back at school yet, so I don’t have as much motivation to do my work. It’s been hard to give 100% in all my classes with other extracurricular activities too. I can help fix this by staying on top of my work and being organized with things like checking Canvas, writing in my planner, and more!

  2. This week I struggled with not just copying down the slides, but really understanding what I was being taught and putting that down on paper into something I can remember later. To help overcome this, I am going to try and listen first in class and then copy down what I need to, so I can be successful.

  3. I’ve been struggling with procrastinating with homework at home. I would just not start homework till late in the evening. I guess I’m just not used to being back in school yet. I’ve been trying to fix this by writing down what my homework is for that day and practicing doing my homework immediately after getting home. It’s a start, but I hope I stick with it.

  5. This week I struggled with managing my time, especially pertaining to homework. It was difficult participating in extracurriculars, sports, and other activities while staying on top of my homework. This was especially difficult with the chemistry reading and questions. However, to overcome this problem, I started writing out a schedule of the day the night before. I wrote down all the key events i had in the next day and checked them off as i did them. This helped me organize my time and it greatly improved the way I managed my tasks at hand.

  6. For me this week, it’s been a good refresher of what the SI units are and what they go with. For example, I did not know the calculations for Kelvin (how to get it) and where 1L came from. While Chemistry can get difficult, I’m glad we can start off with a review to get used to the rhythm of all the classes. Taking good notes and time management will help me better prepare.

  7. I’ve been struggling the most with remembering to do the things I need to do for class at home. I’ve been trying to fix this by writing down the things I need to get done in class when they’re said. I think I did well on my note-taking this week. I was able to pull out my notes and look at them to understand things I wasn’t able to fully grasp in class. When looking at the weight of the ingredients of the food I was cooking, I calculated the accuracy deviation of the weight. I’d rate myself a 3-5 this week; I was still getting used to school as it’s my first full week ever at this school and I was bad with keeping up with some of the things I was supposed to do this week. A serious question I have about class is if it will be as difficult as people have hyped it up to be. This is a question that I will eventually answer for myself as I progress through the year.
