Hon Chemistry 5-6-22 Molecular Geometry & Dipoles

HON CHEMISTRY: Who knew we’d be doing geometry in chemistry?!? Great job today! Lewis structures, multiple bonds, resonance, polyatomic ions, and now molecular geometry and dipoles. Wow, that’s a lot you’ve conquered in the last few days!!

Molecular geometry is super easy. Make sure you know how to draw Lewis structures, then determine the type of ABE structure and you’ve got it. Here’s a copy of Molecular Geometry Shapes – VSEPR handout. Be sure and memorize the shape and the ABE structure that goes with it. Easy-peazy!

Dipoles take a second to think about, but you can do this! So why is molecular geometry important? What’s the big deal about knowing the correct shape of molecules? Here’s the beginning of the answer!

Here’s some good advice – don’t take shortcuts. Learn the proper steps on the easier molecules, and you’ll be able to do the hard ones. And if it’s still all Greek to you, don’t worry! Keep practicing and you’ll get it, I promise!! Don’t forget to count electrons and don’t forget CONS!

  1. Struggle- This past week I struggled to keep up with the notes and homework at first, but I went back over the videos and filled in parts of the notes that I missed and I now understand a little better.

  2. Struggle- this week I have had trouble paying attention in class. I really focused hard and it helped me pay attention more, and I will do better with it next week.

  3. S – My struggle for the week has been staying motivated. While I think I’ve still been working on all of my assignments diligently, I’ve had trouble keeping the motivation to do so. To help to get over this, I’ve just been putting my work in perspective of the end of the year. We’re almost done!

  4. Struggle: My struggle this week has been not preparing for note says. I haven’t read the chapter beforehand to have a general knowledge of what we’re talking about. However, I have been rewatching vodcasts of anything I didn’t fully understand.

  5. Struggle- I struggled this week with keeping up with all of the notes and information of the week. The Lewis structures were pretty easy but some parts of them were pretty confusing. I will practice on working problems

  6. Struggle – This week I struggled with the amount of notes we had to take. It was hard to keep everything straight and remember everything. But then I rewatched the vodcasts and it helped me understand.

  7. I struggle this week on memorizing facts for my
chemistry test. I will fix this by using flash cards
for the exam to memorize facts I may have
    forgotten over this past year.
