Chemistry 10-26-21 Elements & Intro to the Periodic Table

CHEMISTRY – Wow! Do you realize what we just did?!? We finished the chapter!!! Did you feel like today was mostly review?

There are three elements that you will research for the test – Cu, Si, and P. A great resource to research the elements (and the only one you need besides the textbook) are these video clips on copper, phosphorus, and silicon that a group of chemistry researchers have put together at www.periodicvideos.com. Watch these and take notes. The information on these video clips will be on the test.. If you can’t get the phosphorus video to work, use this link on YouTube https://youtu.be/LSYLUat03A4

Hey, have you had a chance to check out the chapter 1 study suggestion sheet? Let me know if there is anything you need help with before the test! (And you’re still learning the symbols of the elements, right?!?)

  1. Question- Why does matter have mass and volume?

Answer- Because matter has a certain amount of weight and matter takes up space which means it will have mass and volume.

  2. Questions: Why can’t there a be a physical and chemical change occuring at the same time?

Answer: Because it may be both but one of them will always triumph over the other so it can only be one answer.

  3. Question: How do we know that distillation gets a pure liquid.

Answer: because then it is distilled it evaporates and goes into a copper tubing that causes it to precipitate. the precipitated liquid is a pure form the mixture. it is not a compound because of the different boiling points each liquid has.

  4. Question: How do you know is something is a homogenous mixture or a heterogeneous mixture?

Answer: It is a homogenous mixture if you cannot see the different parts of a mixture and it is a heterogeneous mixture when you can see the different parts of the mixture.

  5. Question: What can you test to classify an unknown element?

Answer: You could test the luster, malleability, brittleness, and see if it is a good conductor of heat/electricity.

  6. Question: Why does gas have more energy than solids and liquids?

Answer: Because heat causes the molecules to move faster. The volume of gas increases more than the volume of a solid or liquid.

  7. How does water keep a paper cup from burning?

The energy from the flame is transferred to the water causing it to boil rather than concentrating solely on the cup itself and therefore there isn’t enough energy to push the cup to its ignition point.

  8. I rate my week to about a 3. I made an okish grade on my chemistry test but i think i couldve done better but i am pretty ok with the grade i got.
