Hon Chemistry 9-21-21 Lighting a Bunsen Burner

CHEMISTRY – Great job lighting Bunsen burners today! By the way, did you happen to see a green flame when you put the copper wire in the flame? The electrons in the copper atoms were being excited and they gave off a green flame. Cool!!

Here’s something you will find useful in the future…everything you wanted to know about a Bunsen burner and how to light it. Be sure and view the slide show BEFORE you take turn in your lab sheets and take the test.

Tomorrow we’ll continue with Parts 4 – 6. Be sure and read ahead before you come to class! Also, make double dog sure you are keeping up with the observations in each part and answering ALL of the questions at the end of the lab on pg. 17 – 18. There are a TON of them! Check your syllabus for due dates!

Hon Chemistry 9-20-21 Lab Equipment

HON CHEMISTRY – There’s a ton of useful equipment for chemistry this year! Below is a slide show with an overview of the apparatus that you’ll use in the chemistry lab. Click on the black arrow to start the slideshow. For all of the equipment:

  • Know the name of each item.
  • Explain the use of each item (it’s written in white on the slide)

The second slide show is a great tour of our lab. It’s very important information about where stuff is and what it’s used for. I think you’ll find it very helpful. Both of these would be a great way to study equipment for the test! (Hint, hint!) 🙂

Lab Apparatus Assignment – Study the lab equipment in the slide show below and then, when you know them, identify the equipment in the Lab Apparatus Review on Power School. Once you start, you will have 30 minutes to complete the assignment. It’s due on Wednesday by 8:00 A.M.. If I counted right, there are 33 of them.

By the way, there is also a Practice Review on PowerSchool Learning that you can practice with before you do the actual assignment. Also, pictures of most of these are in the back of the Safety Packet.

Hon Chemistry 9-16-21 Lab Safety & Procedures

HON CHEMISTRY: Wow! Great video, but do you feel like you have information overload!?

Here is the lab safety video we watched in class. It does have a ton of info, and the thing is, you absolutely must know it – and not just for the test, but also throughout the year in lab. It’s a really good idea to watch it again and take notes as you go.

HOMEWORK: First though, lets talk about homework.(Don’t forget to check your syllabus to see what else is due tomorrow and Monday!!)

Lab Safety Contract –Since we’ll be in lab so much, it’s important that you write your own lab safety contract. Here’s how you do it::

  • From the first couple of pages of the Safety Packet that you got in class (or it’s also here under the Lab tab), hand write the lab safety statements as your contract.
  • They must be handwritten on notebook paper. You only have to write the first part of the rule that is bold. There are 29 in all and they almost all start with “I will…”.
  • At the end of your contract – after the last statement, hand write the following statement at the bottom: “I agree to abide by these rules.” Then sign underneath and date it.
  • Scan your final signed document as a PDF and submit it into your Chemistry Shared Folder. The assignment name is Lab Safety Contract.You must have this safety contract submitted to do lab for the rest of the year! Due Monday!

Physics 9-14-21 Chapter 2 Concepts Review

PHYSICS: Test Thursday! You can do this!! First here’s the conceptual review we did today, bumblebees, etc. At the end, we took a look the tossed/dropped bouquet problem.

Science In the News Assignment

How can chemistry, physics – or any other type of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) be important to your everyday life? TONS of ways, and this year we’ll be using Science In the News to research just that!

You can find the Science In the News (SItN) assignment under the Worksheet/Handouts tab. Read the handout carefully to make sure that you follow all the guidelines for the assignment.

EXTRA IMPORTANT information about the assignment:

  • Choose a STEM article on websites like sciencenewsforstudents.org or https://www.sciencenews.org/
  • Make sure you pick an article you find interesting and that you understand!!
  • Make sure you pick an article that you can use to answer the questions on the Science In the News sheet. If there are questions you cannot answer with the type of article you have – pick another article!!!
  • The SItN assignment must be typed – double spaced. BUT you will have to scan in your illustration.
  • Type your name on your doc like you do for labs – name date, period in the top right corner
  • Convert your assignment as a PDF. Be sure and name the file correctly. The assignment name is Science in the News and the date of the assignment. Like this C1 Skinner, Tammy SItN 9-20-21
  • Turn in the assignment to both your Google Drive Shared Folder and turnitin.com

Physics 9-13-21 Free Fall HW Problems 2

PHYSICS: Here’s our look at the second set of free fall homework – #36 and #48, the students on a balcony and the second rocket problem. Below that is the help session from this morning – falling flower pots and the pelican.

Are you becoming more comfortable with working problems? When selecting formulas, it’s always a good idea to ask yourself “Why?”. Why can you use this formula? Why is it legit? Why is it the best one? Is there a better route to the solution? And then, continue to practice them over and over til it starts to become second nature!

Hon Chemistry 9-13-21 Graphing Exercise 1

HON CHEMISTRY: Today you are going to learn (or review) how to make graphs using Excel Online.

Here are the instructions for Monday. (You are going to be dreaming about graphs!!)

IMPORTANT: A rough draft of your first graph is due Tuesday by class time. The entire assignment must be submitted by this coming Friday, September 17, 8:00 A.M.

FIRST: You will be doing Exercise 1 with Excel Online. Students can use this for free! Your first step is to go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office to sign up for a free Office 365 account with your school email and get FREE access to Microsoft Office products. Using Excel online, you can do this assignment at school or at home and access it with your own computer, tablet, phone, etc.

Chemistry 9-9-21 Chapter 2 Test Practice

CHEMISTRY – Wow! Is your mind blown when you think about all that you’ve learned to do in chapter 2?

Here’s our overview of the test and practice on some of the problems from this chapter. Below that is the help session from this morning. Since it’s your first real test, we’ll have another help session tomorrow morning, 7:30 A.M.

Did you see the mistake I made in the answers on the Ch 2 Sample Test & Review? Taylor found it – #17b should be 25.0 cg.

Remember, don’t just read your notes – practice your notes, practice the problems, practice the memorization!! If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out the Chapter 2 Stuff to Know sheets under the Test Info tab. Great info!!! And continue to practice with these online games and quizzes:

Online Textbook: There are wonderful Interactive Review Games with your online text. First open chapter 2. Then click on the the Student Premium tab, then Interactive Review Games.

sciencegeek.net has great interactive quizzes with questions like I’ll ask on the test. Find the unit that corresponds to the topics we’ve been studying and begin to quiz yourself. There are answers, too!
