Physics 8-17-21 Measurements in Physics, Pt. 1

PHYSICS – Great job today with our SI system review! You remembered a lot! Were you surprised at yourself?

The hardest part, I think, will be getting back in the habit of showing all your work, using conversion factors, units, dimensional analysis, sig figs, etc. We’ll finish reviewing measurements and the like tomorrow.

  1. T- Today we reviewed sig figs and SI units, and although I’ll admit most of it had left my brain since Chemistry, once we got into the problems, everything came back to me. Same for the lab report on the whirligigs. So far so good, and I know the class will be much harder as time goes on, but we shall cross that bridge when we come to it. For right now I’m happy that I’m still on top of it all.

Today I read an article about a new iron-based catalyst that allows carbon dioxide to be converted into jet fuel. Currently, aeroplanes are responsible for twelve percent of the CO2 in the air that is the result of transportation emissions, but this would allow some of the carbon footprint to be made into something useful. A catalyst that make this conversion is not new, but in the past more expensive elements such as cobalt were used and they required more steps. This new catalyst is both more efficient and cheaper than its predecessors and could make a beneficial impact on the environment in the future.

I would say that I had two triumphs this week- being able to remember and apply my knowledge of sig figs well and being able to stay focused while being remote. Staying focused in class on zoom has always been a struggle for me especially if there are technological issues during class, but despite zoom issues I have been able to stay focused and learn as much as possible while in quarantine. I also did not have as much difficulty as I expected getting back into using sig figs on our homework because I remembered more than I expected.

This week in physics I was able to remember lots of information about sig figs and calculations. Most of it is coming back to me and thankfully it is easier to understand it now than it was when I first learned it in chemistry. Although homeworks have been somewhat of a struggle, I count them as a triumph because even though sometimes I really have no clue what is going on, I still have given my best efforts and been willing to fail at it. Also, graphing on Google Sheets was mostly successful, so I will count that as a triumph.

As we learn and review each class, I find myself either remembering all the little rules and stuff that we learned in chemistry (sig figs, Q-formula, etc.), or retaining all the new things that we are learning and figuring out how to apply everything in different type of problems. The homework has been a little bit difficult, but I’ve find that I do somewhat well when I take the time to think about the step by step processes for each questions and applying what I know in order to find a solution. I feel like I have gotten off to a solid start in physics and I am excited to see what happens in the future of the class.

A triumph this week for me in physics was my ability to easily recall most of the information regarding Significant Figures and the SI system. I’m also happy about my triumph that my ability to perform Q- formula problems has come back to me after chemistry. I’m also glad that I was able to create a graph using google sheets, even if I needed a little bit of help. I still need to work on memorizing all the charts I knew in chemistry, but I’ll get there.

Today I read about the recent FDA approval of clinical trials for Siroquine in the United States. Siroquine is an anti-cancer drug, developed by HebaBiz Biotech. It will be given to patients with recently diagnosed glioblastoma, a cancer with a poor survival time of about a year. This drug is a dual autophagy modulator, which will increase tumor cell’s sensitivity to chemoradiotherapy. And hopefully improve the prognosis of these patients.

Sorry, it was hard to type on my phone. :/

A triumph for this week for mewas being able to remember and apply knowledge from this chapter that we learned in chemistry such as sig figs and the SI system. This has helped me to do well and not struggle as much on homework as I would if I didn’t have this information. Also remembering the structure in which to do homework and how the classroom works allows me to be more comfortable and sure of myself in class which I consider a big triumph.
