Chemistry Thursday & Friday Remote Learning Assignment

CHEMISTRY: Are you surviving the snow? Thursday and Friday you’ll be working on practicing memorizing and using the 17 types of chemical reactions.

Thursday: Do the ODD questions on Balancing Equations Worksheet 3. You can either answer on the worksheet, or you can answer on notebook paper. If you answer on notebook paper, skip a line between each equation. To turn it in, make a CLEAN scan of your work and submit as a PDF to your Chemistry shared folder in Google Drive. Include WS 3 Odd in the save as title.

Friday: Do the EVEN questions on Balancing Equations Worksheet 3. You can either answer on the worksheet, or you can answer on notebook paper. If you answer on notebook paper, skip a line between each equation. To turn it in, make a CLEAN scan of your work and submit as a PDF to your Chemistry shared folder in Google Drive. Include WS 3 Even in the save as title.

I miss you! Hope you’re staying safe and warm – and having a lot of fun in the snow, too!

  1. Q: Why is there an activity series for metals and an activity series for non-metals? Why aren’t they just combined to form one?

A: Well, the activity series is a list of elements that decreases order of their reactivity. Since metals preface other metals and non-metals replace other non-metals they have desperate activity series. This is because metals cannot replace non-metals and vice versa.

  2. Q: Why is there an activity series for metals and an activity series for non-metals? Why aren’t they just combined to form one?

A: Well, the activity series is a list of elements that decreases in order of their reactivity. Since metals replace other metals and non-metals replace other non-metals they have separate activity series. This is because metals cannot replace non-metals and vice versa.

  3. Q: Are all chemical equations that are given to you actually able to react? Explain how you know this. Give an example of a chemical reaction that can not take place.

A: No not all chemical reactions can take place and I know this based on the rules of the activity series. One example of this is Gold burning in air. The rules of the activity series state that everything except gold, silver and platinum can burn in air.

  4. Question: where do you go to find out if a metal is able to replace another metal in a chemical equation?

    Answer: the activity series.

  5. Question: Why do we need to us the activity series?

Answer: When we use the activity series it allows us to see what elements are more reactive than others, so we can be safe and not blown up.

  6. Q.
Why are some metals more/less reactive than others?
    A.
Some metals have charges that react better with certain compounds and elements

  7. Question: Why is there an activity series with metals and why are there not non-metals with it ?
Answer: The Activity series is a chart of most reactive metals to least reactive metal a metal can not take the place of a non metal and a nonmetal can’t take the place of a metal.

  8. How could we use the activity series in everyday life?

We need to know if we are making something out of metal and we don’t know if they work together so you would use the activity series to see if they are safe or not.

  9. Q:why do some reactions need a catalyst?
A:some reactions need a certain amount of energy to happen, so adding a catalyst speeds up the reaction time and the amount of reaction that happens.

  10. Q.What happens in a chemical reaction to let you know it is a combustion reaction?

    A. Hydrocarbons burn in air to produce carbon dioxide and water.

  11. Q: Why should we always check the activity series?

A: We need to be able to find what elements might be more reactive so we don’t harm ourselves when trying to do an experiment. They are listed by which element is most reactive to which element is least reactive.

  12. question: How does a catalyst help a reaction?
answer: a catalyst will cause the reaction to happen quicker than the normal time the reaction happens.

  13. q: why do some reactions need catalysts?
a: some reactions need catalysts to speed up the reaction so they can happen faster and be observed.

  14. Question: What does “Burn in air” mean? Can metals do this?
Answer: Burn in air means + O2 in the formula, and certain metals can burn in air.

  15. Q: Why are some metals more reactive than others?
A: The reactivity of metals is dependent on their electrons. Metals that lose electrons more readily are more reactive.

  16. Q- Why can Copper take the place of Silver but Silver can not take the place of Copper?
    A. Copper is more reactive than Silver making it able to take the place of Silver.

  17. Q: Why do we even use the activity series for metals or non metals?

A: As chemist we use this list to determine which chemical is more reactive, can they take the place of another chemical and can it even have a reaction.

  18. Q: why are catalysts used
A: they are used to speed up a reaction and help it go along smoother however when writing a reaction do not put your catalyst in the reactant or product spaces

  19. Q. what is the point of having the activity series

    A. to help you predict if a reaction will occur is a metal is placed in water, acid solution, or a solution of any other metal

  20. Q: why are catalysts used
A: they are used to speed up a reaction and help it go along smoother however when writing a reaction do not put your catalyst in the reactant or product spaces

  21. Q. In Combustion of Hydrocarbons, what is produced when a hydrocarbon burns in air (reacts with oxygen)?

    A. It produces carbon dioxide and water.

  22. Q: Why are catalysts used in many experiments but not others?
A: Some experiments and elements need to be sped up using a catalyst because it is a longer process. Others are a fast enough reaction on their own so they don’t need the catalyst.

  23. Q: Why are some elements more reactive than others?

A: Some elements lose their outer electrons more easily than others, so they react more readily with other elements.

  24. Q: What is the activity series used for?

A: to determine if a metal can react in a chemical equation.. it can also be used to determine if a metal can replace another metal in a chemical reaction.

  25. Question : what is the point of the activity series? What do we use it for ?

Answer : it determines how a chemical can react and if it can be replaced in a chemical equation

  26. Question:
What 3 elements do not burn in air to form oxides in a synthesis reaction and why?
    Answer:
Ag,Pt, and Au do not burn in air to form oxides because they are metals below mercury on the activity series.

  27. What are the 5 types of chemical reactions?

Synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion.

  28. Q: How did they find out the order if the activity series?
A:They put the more reactive elements at the top and they find which ones are more reactive by seeing which metals have a greater tendency to lose electrons.
