Chemistry 2-10-21 Single Replacement Reactions & the Activity Series, Pt. 2

CHEMISTRY: Good job today on single replacement reactions! And great job using the activity series!

We’ve done 15 so far – how are you doing on memorizing them?! Careful though, don’t just memorize. Make sure you can apply them as well. When you start to work any equation, first determine what type of reaction it is, then figure out what rule applies and follow it to determine the products. I believe in you! You can do it!!

  1. Scientists at Tsinghua University in China have created a backpack that could lessen the strain on your back. This backpack reduces strain by “bouncing” up and down by using a system of pulleys that move the backpack up and down on rails. This also creates a small bit of energy that could be used to have led lights or to charge a small device.

  2. New research shows that some seals eat little crustaceans, just like whales. They are able to catch these little creatures because they have comb-shaped teeth.

  3. Scientists have come to the conclusion that the Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored in a -70 Celsius temperature. The vaccine cannot properly work if it is not frozen. If it is anywhere above the temperature then the vaccine is useless. They discovered this because for the RNA to get to the cells the vaccine has to be completed cells. This will allow the RNA the time it needs to get to the cell to help the recipient to fight the virus.

  4. Scientists have determined that athletes who have experienced COVID- 19 could have heart troubles after the fact. They have tested 54 athletes who have had it and 40 percent of athletes have shown this condition. The condition does not cause life long issues.

  5. A new invention coined the “micro needle” may be the next big jump in vaccinations for all types of virus and only goes a fraction as deep into the skin compared to the needles that are used now days

  6. Kids are not getting the vaccine until it is proven safe. Children under 12 are not well developed enough, and they have not had the vaccine long enough to tknow the effect it would have on children.

  7. Children’s diet can affect them lifelong. The experiment was putting mice on unhealthy and healthy diets with a spinning wheel. They took them off the diet for 3 weeks and it showed that the mice who were on the unhealthy diet exercised a lot less than the ones on a healthy diet. This experiment shows that children’s diet can affect them long term.

  8. Lego Education is coming out with a new way teach students called BricQ Motion. BricQ Motion is revolutionary for students K-8 as there is interactive activities they can do such as teacher/student videos, worksheets, and videos.

  9. Scientist in United Kingdom are coming out with new medicines to help your lungs while you have COVID, to help with the moisture on your lungs. There is a problem with the price though. But it had a higher success rate than we have been using.

  11. Johnson & Johnson came up with a vaccine that helps you fight covid better and none of the people who got the vaccine died from covid. It uses the common cold virus to help you fight it off. It only requires one dosage. They tried it on people all over the world. But it is a good step forward to stop the spread before it can mutate again.

  12. Scientist are figuring out that climate change could be a possible reason for COVID-19.
They did a study showing that climate change has pushed bats to new locations, and some of the bats carried the deadly disease and spread it to humans.

  13. Some sea stars are turning into goo. There is a type of bacteria getting on them and taking their oxygen making the starfish suffocate and turn to goo.

  14. The clothing industry’s rapid growth has also caused a rapid increase in pollutants. If we keep going at this rate it could be detrimental to our environment.

  15. Scientists have discovered that space travel impacts the astronauts’ mitochondria. After returning to earth, it was found that the mitochondria did not function as well as they did before. This condition can cause a variety of health issues, including loss of bone and muscle, immune disorders, heart issues, and liver problems.

  16. Music has been proven to help combat the effects of Alzheimers. AD does not attack the key parts of our brain that hold musical memory, so when familiar music is played for these patients, it often brings damaged or lost memories back with it. Music cannot cure AD but it helps relieve memory loss and is comforting for the patients.

  17. Researchers at the University of Oxford are currently designing a catalyst that can be used to help convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas in the air to a usable jet fuel for airplanes. While other catalysts operate in the same way, they require expensive and rarer resources, but this new one uses less expensive and easily attainable materials such as iron.

  18. Psychologists have discovered that since the COVID pandemic mental health for college students has majorly changed for the worse. The students distress levels are high. This is more common in women.
