Physics 10-23-20 And Did the Hammock Crash?

PHYSICS: Great work today thinking through this one and also the “Wanda has a sign” problems! How you look at problems from the beginning can make a huge difference – huh?

A couple of things that work for me when doing equilibrium, etc., problems – first, draw them. Then go back through and separate resultants into components. If an object is in equilibrium, then there are no net forces – all the forces in the x direction balance – everything left equals everything right, and all the forces up equal all the forces down.

You’ve got all the ammo you need, now go forth and conquer!

Answers for the Equilibrants II worksheet are below:

  1. Fn = 3430 N upward against feet
  2. Fn1 = Fn2 = 1890 N upward on each foot
  3. F forward = 4.59 N
  4. T1 = T2 = 1760 N
  5. T1 = 1360 N and T2 = 680. N

  1. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. While I have been in class, I have not been paying as much attention as I should because I have been very tired from the play. I have tried to pay attention but it has been very hard. I have been taking notes though and trying to keep up with my homework. I have not gotten to get ahead on my labs. Overall, this week has been a whirl-wind, and I have tried my best to stay on top of everything.

  2. This week I would rate myself a 2.5/5. I have not done very good with staying on top of my work, and I definitely have not worked ahead on any of my assignments. I allowed my outside stress to affect my work quality in physics, and I do not have time for that kind of struggling. Over this long weekend I hope to be able to rest and recharge in order to keep myself from crumbling next week. I also hope that I will have time to work ahead on some assignments to reduce my future workload.

  3. This week I rate myself a 3.5/5. Since I missed school on Monday for my college tour, I got behind on my work. Although I was able to catch up, it took me longer to understand the concepts at first since I missed the conceptual learning in class. I understood the homework this week, and I hope to increase my understanding of these concepts with the upcoming practice. The lab this week was very insightful in how inertia works. Overall, this was a good week, and I am ready to learn more to better my understanding of inertia and Newton’s Laws!

  4. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I did pretty well with the schoolwork itself. I haven’t been working on my labs and I’m still scratching my head on why our data for the inertia lab could be wrong, but other than that nothing has been especially difficult. I really enjoyed the hammock problem. It was a relatively simple concept that transitions perfectly into the more complex problems of the traffic light moved by the wind. I’m really enjoying the DIRECTION that we are taking in physics and hope to take it by FORCE. 🙂

  5. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. This week was quite chaotic. The inertia problems came pretty easily to me and I was on top of the work. I very much enjoyed watching the video in class. The only thing is that I was pretty lackluster on the lab.

  6. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. I have not horribly struggled this week, but it has also not been completely smooth sailing. I understood the easier and medium problems, but I definitely didn’t understand Zorba. I am very grateful we had the help session to go over Zorba because now I feel like I have a better grasp on what I need to do to solve it! I’m sad I’m missing the continuation of today’s lab (I’m sorry Taryn and Madison), and I hope it will not hinder my understanding of the lab and my ability to effectively complete the lab report. I’m looking forward to getting my wisdom teeth over with and coming back to physics!!

  7. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. I completed my Science in the News early this week so I didn’t have to do it during the week. I also started my take home lab last night so I could get ahead. I started to write up one of my labs. The lab today was a little frustrating because we couldn’t figure out some elements of SparkVue, but we will try again tomorrow. I am going to see if I can finish and then rework the Zorba problem by myself. I am going to try to rework the Equilibrium problems tonight to keep myself on track for the test.

  8. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. I understood the lab in class, and I had a fun time testing the different masses and comparing the force and velocity of the car. I understood how to the homework, but the Zorba problem was challenging. After we went over it, it made a lot more sense, and I feel like I can repeat the steps now. I plan to continue practicing problems to keep the information fresh for the test. I have loved exploring Newton’s Laws this week with different labs or experiments. Also, I believe that I have done better with learning and understanding the notes this week because we have done hands-on activities to demonstrate it. Overall, this was a really good week. On another note, this week was good because I decided what college I am going to attend!

  9. i rate myself a 3/5 this week. I feel behind even though i completed everything and n time and i think it a because i feel behind in my labs. I don’t think i understand this chapter too well, i’m struggling a bit. Hopefully with a little work i’ll get better 🙂

  10. I rate myself 4/5 this week. I am beginning to understand the chapter more thoroughly, but not completely yet. The labs were fun to do but I still need to work on the write-ups.I am glad to get a nice long weekend (plus it’s Halloween)!

  11. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I feel pretty good about this week in general. The only thing that’s keeping it from a 5 is the fact that I forgot to save part 3 of Newton’s second law lab. (Sorry Wilson) Luckily, I was able to go back during some free time and regather the data we had. Overall it has been a pretty great week, had lots of fun during my math test!

  12. I rate myself a 3.5/5 this week. I felt a little shaky about the problems that were at an angle while we were doing them in class, but when I did the homework problems last night, I didn’t struggle, and I got them all right! I was a little unsure about the problems that were at an incline at first during class, but as we kept doing problems, I became more confident, so I hope I am able to complete the homework problems with minimal difficulty this weekend. I have made absolutely no progress on lab reports, so I have a feeling a large part of my weekend will be taken by writing up labs. This is completely my fault, but I hope it motivates me to not wait so long to do them after Thanksgiving break!

  13. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. I’ve worked on my lab reports during the week to keep myself from procrastinating. I’ve gotten my homework done in a timely manner. I understand these problems the best out of past physics problems and j actually enjoy doing them. Working the problems is like trying to put together a puzzle. The satisfaction I get from getting the correct answer is something I look forward to. I am enjoying physics immensely right now! Also, I’m very glad Mallory and I did the car lab correctly. Even though it was stressful at first, I’m glad we pushed through and completed it!

  14. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I understood the problems at an angle in class, and I got the homework problems right too! The problems at an incline are not as bad as I thought they would be, but I definitely need more practice on them. I plan to work incline problems this weekend to help me get the process down and to fully understand how to do them. Also, I plan to start preparing for the test next week by reworking problems from earlier in the chapter so that way I can remember the concepts and how to do all the different types of problems. This week has been really good, and I am happy that I have understood the problems we have been working. I am a little behind on labs, but it shouldn’t take me long this weekend to write them up. Overall, I had a decent week, but I need to practice the problems and go back over the conceptual information before next week!

  15. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. This chapter still feels a little out of my reach but I’m getting better! Todays problems were not bad and I actually was able to keep up when working the incline problems. I plan on reworking some old problems and doing my other homework over the weekend to help me better understand.

  16. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I’ve really enjoyed the problems we’ve been working on in class. I think it is very interesting that, if you set it up correctly, forces on an incline is the exact same thought process as if the slopes weren’t on an angle. I had some difficulty in the beginning with the concept of whether or not to include negatives and what-not, but I believe I have finally figured it out. I’ve let myself get behind a bit on labs but there is little to fear because I have all weekend to finish them up and get them looking pretty! Overall, it has been a pretty good week in physics land.

  17. AND WE’RE BACK on the same post for the third week in a row. This week I’m gonna give myself a rather generous rating of 4/5. The reasoning behind this controversial decision is I believe that my only issue this week is I have 3 lab write-ups to do. Other than that, I have a solid grasp on the concepts we are working on. ALSO IF ANYONE IS LOOKING AT THIS POST I CHALLENGE YOU TO BEAT MY PERSONAL RECORD OF BALANCING A PENCIL ON MY FINGER.

    Rules:
    1. You must use a #2 Pencil
    2. You cannot turn off gravity
    3. You may not use a calculator
    Time to beat: 2.64 s
