Hon Chemistry 9-3-20 Using Density

HON CHEMISTRY – Here’s a pic of some “high density” koi that I saw in Hawaii (at the Dole Pineapple Plantation, of all places!). Great applicaitons of density today! Remember, in chemistry we use math as a tool, therefore we might work problems a little differently in chemistry than you do in your math class.

When working these problems, don’t forget to follow the problem solving steps we discussed today:

  • Analyze – write down what you’re given and what you’re looking for
  • Plan – write a formula where you isolate the unknown on one side by itself
  • Compute – plug in your data, numbers and units; then cancel the units, and if they cancel correctly, go on to the calculator. Be sure and give your answer what the correct units.
  • Evaluate – does your answer make sense, have you used the correct units, do you have the correct sig figs?

  1. This week I learned how to use formulas such as the Q formula and calculating density. I applied these to completing my homework more efficiently as well as to understanding how to convert things in my daily life.

  2. In chemistry this week, even though it was via zoom, I learned converting measurements using the q-formula and using a balance as well. I applied the conversions to help my mom with dinner and the balance in completing the building balance take home lab. I hope to continue to especially use converting more often in my walk through this interesting period of life.

  3. This week I learned the q-formula. I had a thought about applying to calories used during exercise.

    1 kcal = the amount of energy needed to heat 1 kg of water 1 K

    I thought about how much energy 500 kcal is in terms of heat.

    QS = QG * CF
    xK = 500 kcal * 1 K/1kcal
    xK = 500 K increase in 1 kg of water

  4. This week i learned the q-formula and learned how to apply that to things around my house like cooking and converting measurements when I measured something.
