Chemistry 1-15-20 Structure of the Atom

CHEMISTRY – Chocolate chip cookie dough model of the atom? That’s what Thompson thought the atom must look like! Here’s our discussion of how scientists began to determine the structure of the atom and the existence of subatomic particles. For each, make sure you know the name of the scientists, the name of their experiments, be able to draw a diagram of their experiment, and describe how they interpreted the experimental results that led to their discoveries. Wow, that’s a mouthful!

As we continue the explore the discovery of the structure of the atom, here are some video clips that I want everyone to watch that will help make things a bit clearer. Click here for the video on the Cathode Ray Tube Experiment that Thompson did, and also for the video clips that I want you to watch on The Discovery of the Electron and The Discovery of the Nucleus. All of these will be great tools in studying for the test!

  1. This week I triumphed over the forgetful web post comment. This semester I don’t have a study hall so I’m re-learning how to work everything in. But overall this week is going great.

  2. This week I was triumphant over the model of an atom activity. I thought that it was really cool putting ourselves in the shoes of the scientists over 100 years ago and trying to use our senses to figure out what was in the can.

  3. This week I triumphed at getting back into the swing of chemistry and focusing on what’s important. Also in taking notes and paying attention to the details.

  4. I think I have more accurately written the lab report for the Conservation of Mass experiment because I spent more time on it and put more effort into it. Also, I often leave out important details or have conflicting conclusions, but I think I understood lab this better than some in the past. When it is graded, I will find out if I’m correct, but for now I feel confident in it.

  5. This week my triumph was that I was able to remember to do my homework and get things done that needed to get done. Getting. Ack in the swing of chemistry and accomplishing why I needed to accomplish

  6. My triumph this week was keeping up with all of my assignments and homework. I’ve loved the spectrum of light activities that we’ve been doing in class, so it’s not hard for me to concentrate at all. I want to make sure to keep my momentum forward and work really hard this semester.

  7. This week I triumphed over writing down all my assignments. I usually forget half of my homework that I need to do, but since I am writing it down hopefully I will not forget anything!

  8. This week, I triumphed on completing my homework in a timely manner. I was able to do this because I checked my syllabus regularly. I was also able to get back into the school mindset by managing my time with all my assignments.

  9. This week, I triumphed in taking better notes. I also listened to the vodcast in class and went back to reviewed them. I also triumphed in keeping up with all my homework and assignments.

  10. I triumphed in taking better notes this week and working toward my goal. Also, I went back and reviewed the podcasts to get extra important information.

  11. This week I triumphed over not forgetting to do my web post. I usually forget to write my web post but this week I remembered to do it.
