Hon Chemistry 11-6 & 7-19 Empirical & Molecular Formulas

HON CHEMISTRY: Awesome job yesterday and today!! You just about figured out how to find empirical formulas and molecular formulas all by yourself! I love the way you were able to think through what you knew and what you needed to find a solution!

Be sure and practice – if you don’t it’ll get all turned around and you’ll end up leaving off an important step. The hardest part is that it’s not a set formula for you to plug and play, but if you’ll keep in mind that you’re really just looking for subscripts which are just moles, you’ll be able to think it through. Percent to mass, mass to moles, moles to smallest whole number ratio.

Are you starting to catch on to the steps? It will be good for you to memorize them, but would it not be just tons better to understand why you need each step – backwards and forwards, so then you wouldn’t need to memorize them at all!

And then, also remember what molecular formulas are – just a multiple of the empirical formula. Keep that concept in mind, and you’ll have no problem remembering to divide the molecular formula mass by the empirical formula mass to find X! Easy peasy! 🙂

  1. I didn’t too great this week, but the triumph I had was sticking through it and keeping my head up, though I had every reason not to. Next week I will strive to, A, remember to do my homework over the weekends and, B, to always look over the syllabus.

  2. This week I have two triumphs. The first is understanding molecular and empirical formulas because I not only listened in class, but also tried to participate in class and be an active learner. My second triumph is getting my lab report finished. I did not get the grade I wanted to get on one of my recent lab reports, so I wanted to do better on this one, but I was really dreading it. However, God gave me the efficiency and perseverance to finish quickly and feel confident about it.

  3. This week, my triumph is learning the molecular and empirical formulas. I paid attention in class every day and tried my best to participate fully whenever we worked problems. This really helped me not just learn how to do them but completely understand how to work them. Also, I stayed on top of my work this week and did not forget to do any of my homework or lab write ups.

  4. This week I did well with the concepts we learned and found the homework to be pretty easy. I think this is because I was attentive and focused in class. I also found a new way of taking notes that worked very well for me and allowed me to go back and look at problems and concepts for later use. A second triumph was being able to do the lab report without rushing it or staying up extremely late like I had to do with one of the recent ones.

  5. This week I have two main triumphs. My first triumph was finishing my take home lab early. I did this by actually working on the lab when I got home on Tuesday and Wednesday instead of relaxing. My second triumph was understanding what we did in class pretty well. This was because I was really interested in the lessons this week. This helped me on my homework a lot, and it also helped me to enjoy it more.

  6. My triumph this week was the take home lab. I didn’t understand it too well at first and did the math wrong but then I got the hang of it and finished it and my write up on time. I also understood our class work with empirical and molecular formulas well and I’ve already started studying for the test next week which I need.

  7. This week my triumph was the take home lab. It was the first lab report that I didn’t have to restart something because I messed on a section. I also got better at calculating moles, molecules, and molecular mass.

  8. A triumph I had this week was actually understanding the molecular and empirical formula problems that we worked in class. I was able to go home and work them without being super confused which was really nice after being confused about chemical formulas.

  9. This week I had a major triumph in the classroom as well as at home. At the beginning of the week was struggling with motivation to complete the assigned material. However, starting on Wednesday I went to bed at an appropriate time and was no longer as tired as I normally am. This led to me having a much better work ethic and understanding of the material.

  10. My triumph this week was in the take home lab. I completed the lab well before the lab write up was due, leaving myself plenty of time to complete my write up. This lab helped me really understand fully how to calculate moles and molar mass

  11. My greatest accomplishment this week was that I learned a good bit and retained it in my memory very well. I may have missed over half the days of class but that did not hold me back. I kept up the grind even while I was at home because I don’t want to fail.
