Hon Chemistry 10-22-19 Chemical Formulas with Polyatomic Ions

HON CHEMISTRY: Great job today! Remember it’s like baby steps, first binary ionic compounds, and now, formulas with polyatomic ions. Begin learning them now! And practice, practice, practice!!

Another great idea, click here for a copy of the Hints for Naming Chemical Formulas Flow Chart, or find it under the Worksheet/Handouts Tab. Follow it every time you name chemical formulas!!

  1. In a recent study by Jonas Miller, a psychologist at Stanford University, shows that air pollution can cause higher stress levels in young adults and teens. In bigger cities, air pollution is a big problem. Everyone knows that the microparticles are bad for your health, but now their even worse for teens and young adults. In stressful situations, this air pollution makes kids more stressed and anxious that someone who hadn’t breathed in the polluted air.

  2. In my article, scientists studied how air pollution can intensify teen’s feeling of stress. They performed experiments by testing teenagers who lived in or near San Francisco, which is one of the cities with the worst air quality. These studies showed that teenagers who lived in neighborhoods with more air pollution had stronger anxiety than those who lived in nicer air quality places. Also, they concluded that limiting your time outside during rush hour can help prevent leading to anxiety.

  3. My Science in the News article is about a new computer program that can make fake videos that are meant to trick the viewer. This technology can cause a person in a video to match (or mirror) all the facial movements and expressions of a person off camera. It is kind of scary to think of all the possibilities that this technology can have and all the lies it could spread, with one person pretending to be another. However, learning more about this program can help us detect fake videos later on and be more aware that these videos could really be out there.

  4. This week my Science in the News article was about Google claiming that they have crossed the line of quantum supremacy. Google has built a 53 qubit (quantum bit) computer that is able to accomplish tasks hundreds of times faster than it would take an extremely powerful super computer to accomplish. While no one is denying that what Google has done is an amazing, there are still some people who do not believe that they have truly crossed the line of quantum supremacy with their quantum computer. This technology is still in the developmental state but once perfected could be used for a lot of good in various different areas of technology.

  5. My science in the news article was about how fructose, a type of sugar commonly found in sodas, and BPA in combination with glucose can cause the pancreas to produce more insulin. If the pancreas consistently overproduces insulin, you can become insulin resistant. When this happens people develop type 2 diabetes.

  6. In my Science in the News article scientists discovered a new kind of storm on Saturn before this discovery there were small storms lasting days or weeks and Great White Spots lasting months or years. A new medium kind of storm was recently discovered. It takes about 10 times the energy of a small storm to start and 1/100 the energy of a Great White Spot to start. During observations they discovered that the medium storm is mostly wind with a few flashes of lightning a minute whereas the other kinds have hundreds of flashes a second.

  7. My Science in the News article was about scientists conducting experiments on bubbles. They ran experiments on the best concentration of bubbles by testing the different concentration’s bubbles thickness and it’s ability to stretch. The scientists concluded that the ingredient to a great bubble is polymers, specifically guar.
