Physics 8-14-19 Measurements in Physics, Pt. 1

PHYSICS – Great job today with our SI system review! You remembered a lot! Were you surprised at yourself?

The hardest part, I think, will be getting back in the habit of showing all your work, using conversion factors, units, dimensional analysis, sig figs, etc. We’ll finish reviewing measurements and the like tomorrow. Happy, happy!

Chemistry 8-13-19 Measuring Mass & Volume

CHEMISTRY: Did you remember about massing with a balance and measuring volume with a graduated cylinder?

If you need a quick tutorial, here are some of the tips from today – some reminders on how to read the instruments and how far out you carry your measurements, etc.

If you Both the mass and volume measurements are due by Friday. I’ll be at school by 7:45 if, you’d need to come finish up. Also, don’t forget the tons of questions at the end of the packet!

Chemistry 8-13-19 Lighting a Bunsen Burner

CHEMISTRY – Great job lighting Bunsen burners today! By the way, did you happen to see a green flame when you put the copper wire in the flame? The electrons in the copper atoms were being excited and they gave off a green flame. Cool!!

Here’s something you will find useful in the future…everything you wanted to know about a Bunsen burner and how to light it. Be sure and view the slide show BEFORE you take turn in your lab sheets and take the test.

Tomorrow we’ll continue with Parts 4 & 5. Be sure and read ahead before you come to class! Also, make double dog sure you are keeping up with the observations and answering ALL of the questions at the end of the lab on pg. 13 – 18. There are a TON of them!!!

Chemistry 8-12-19 Lab Safety & Procedures

CHEMISTRY: Wow! Great video, but do you feel like you have information overload!?

Here is the lab safety video we watched in class. It does have a ton of info, and the thing is, you absolutely must know it – and not just for the test, but also throughout the year in lab. It’s a really good idea to watch it again and take notes as you go.

Make sure and check your syllabus to be ready for tomorrow! Here are some important reminders:

  • Be sure you have entered your information in the first day of class form – it’s in the the post I wrote called, “Beginnings” – it’s due TODAY!!
  • Don’t forget the QUIZ tomorrow – Lab Equipment from the slide show on Lab Equipment post. Just the equipment, not the use.
  • Be sure and read and highlight Pt. 1, The Bunsen Burner, for tomorrow. If you didn’t get a copy in class, you can find it and print it from the Lab tab here on the website.

Physics 8-9-19 Using the Scientific Method

PHYSICS: I love listening to you “talk through” the scientific method! Can’t wait to see what you design for your whirly gigs! Now what could you do to get the longest hang time? Hmmmmm…..

Whirly Gig template is under the Worksheet tab, if you need it. Happy flying!

Chemistry 8-9-19 Lab Equipment

CHEMISTRY – Hey guys! There’s lots of useful equipment for chemistry this year! Below is a slide show with an overview of the apparatus that you’ll use in the chemistry lab. Click on the black arrow to start the slideshow. For all of the equipment:

  • Know the name of each item.
  • Explain the use of each item (it’s written in white on the slide)

The second slide show is a great tour of our lab. It’s very important information about where stuff is and what it’s used for. I think you’ll find it very helpful. Both of these would be a great way to study equipment for the test! (Hint, hint!) 🙂

HOMEWORK: First though, lets talk about homework.(Don’t forget to also check your syllabus!!)

1) Lab Equipment – Study the lab equipment in the slide show below and then practice identifying the equipment in the Lab Apparatus Review on Power School. It’s due on Monday by class time. If I counted right, there are 33 of them. By the way, pictures of most of these are also in the back of the Safety Packet.

2) Lab Safety ContractSince we’ll be in lab so much, it’s important that you write your own lab safety contract. Here’s how you do it::

  • From the first couple of pages of the Safety Packet that you got in class (or it’s also here under the Lab tab), write the lab safety statements as your contract.
  • They may be handwritten on notebook paper or typed (must be printed). You only have to write the first part of the rule that is bold. There are 29 in all and they almost all start with “I will…”.
  • At the end of your contract – after the last statement, hand write “I agree to abide by these rules.” Then sign underneath and date it. Even if you type the safety rules, you’ll need to hand write this last part.
  • Due Monday!

Beginnings

What a great first day! You’re off to a great start on a truly tremendous adventure. I’m so glad you’re in my class and that I’ll be able to share this adventure with you! Here is your assignment for tomorrow and for the next few days.

  • TODAY – Sign up for Remind. Follow the instructions on the Technology Overview sheet you got in class today. This sheet is also here on the website under the “Worksheets/Handouts” tab. (Your parents can sign up for this also.)
  • Read the class info sheet front & back – sign it and ask your parents to sign it (front & back!!!). The Class info sheet is due by MONDAY in class. The Class Info sheet is also here on the website under the “Class Procedures” tab on the top left of this page, if you didn’t get one in class.
  • Enter your information in the form below. You may need to use the scroll bar on the right side of the form to get to the bottom of it. The form must be completed by 8:00 A.M., THIS Monday morning, but I encourage you to do it before then!
  • Check your syllabus daily to see what we are going to be doing in class this week, for homework, and for the due dates for class supplies!!
