Chemistry Notes from cLAB: Element Reverse Scavenger Hunt

CHEMISTRY: Have you missed any of the discussion from the intro to each block in the Element Scavenger Hunt? This vodcast is for you!

Test Monday(!) and I’m going to let you use your Scavenger Hunt on the LAST ten minutes of the test (!) – so I thought I’d post TWO VERY IMPORTANT vodcasts to help you study for this part of the test. First is the beginning again – a history of the periodic table and the general notes on each block – some of this you may have seen before. Second vodcast is a final run through of slides – clarifying some information and filling in gaps you might have.

Amazing! Before you started the cLAB, did you every dream there was that much interesting and important stuff to know about the s, p, d, and f block elements?!

As you are studying, make sure you go back and practice figuring out the period, block, group, and type of element from the electron configuration. And don’t forget the topics I asked you to research for yourself that you will find on the Chapter 5 Stuff to Know Sheet on Edline!!

To make your research even more interesting(!), there are some really interesting videos with tons of useful information at this site: http://periodicvideos.com/

Some great videos to watch from the s-block for the test are potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Some great videos to watch for the p-Block are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and chlorine. http://periodicvideos.com/

Some great videos to watch from the d block are: copper and mercury. And there are other interesting ones you might like to watch just for fun!

Some great videos to watch from the f block are: neodymium, thorium, and uranium. Go pop some popcorn and have some movie time!

  1. This week I would rate myself a 3/5 so far. Last week I forgot my web post so I am making sure I don’t this week! The test was kind of hard for me, I studied a lot but didn’t have enough time to do the best to my ability. I definitely feel like I learned a lot last chapter and I am looking forward to Explore Zone Thursday!

  2. This week I would rate myself a 3/5 but I wasn’t there for the test so it might go down after I take it. I forgot my webpost again last week but will do me best to remember from now on.

  3. This week I’d rate myself a 2/5 because I didn’t study for the text in new york and thought I didn’t do my homework, but a triumph was the only homework was on thursday night and i did that and stressed for no reason in first period. So, i hope i do well on my test that i plan to take on friday. Anyway, have a great rest of the weekend and explore zone!!!!

  4. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. I know I didn’t do very good on my test this week.
I really studied so, I don’t know what happened. I am very excited for explore zone!!!!!!!!!! I also did very good on my notes in class.

  5. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. I studied a lot for the test, but I don’t think I did very well on it. I understood the new stuff we learned today which is a good thing. I am looking forward to explore zone!! Hope it will be a fun day!!

  6. I rate myself a 3/5 for this week because i studied for the test but i dont think i did that well on it. It was confusing and i couldnt remember the diagrams but im ready for explorer zone and cant wait to learn again on friday.

  7. I rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I am still studying for the makeup test and feel like i will do very well on the test. I have made sure to go over the notes from the vodcast and rewatch the vodcast alot. Explore zone was very fun with all the different exhibits everybody had!! Have a great weekend!!!

  8. I rate myself a 5/5 this week. The project went very well with no problems, My ACT went pretty quickly but I managed to understand and read all of the problems, then I had taken my test Wednesday for I had missed Monday.

  9. this week was pretty good. i would rate myself a 3/5. i think i did ok on the test but i didn’t finish it and that kinda worries me. also, i had a lot of fun at explore zone!

  10. This week i would rate myself 3/5. I think i did pretty good on my test and i actually learned a few things at the explore zone today.

  11. This week I think I’d rate myself a 4.45/5. I felt like I performed really well this week, especially today at ExploreZone. The ACT on Tuesday went well, though to be honest I did not prepare much for this one. The chemistry test earlier this week also went well, but I am almost certain I only got 3/4 points on the Marsh test question. The ExploreZone today really reminded me how cool experimental science can be. Normally, I prefer working out stuff on paper with equations, models, and the like, but there is definitely something invigorating about trying something out for the sake of knowledge, not knowing what will happen. Now, we later found out that the reason why nobody does the hand-blowing fire is because it lights unreliably, but that did not take away from the sensation of thinking of an idea, trying it out, then continuing to improve the methods. I think that today was a good indicator that I am better fit for an engineering field as opposed to a theoretical pure science/math field, which is an internal debate I’ve been having with myself this year. I think sometimes God uses tiny setbacks such as being moved to a different group and having to learn an exhibit the day before performing to show us what His plan for our life is. If I had been in the Glow Wall group, while it certainly would have been fun, I doubt that I would have had the same epiphany afterwards, and for that I am grateful. This week was more of a week of reflection than learning, but I do feel successful in that; I have made some tentative decisions about my future plans. Next week, hopefully we’ll begin to learn about bonding, because that is an interesting concept to me, how everything just wants to use as little energy as possible by being as stable as possible.

  12. I would rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I have been a stressed mess especially with test, ACT, explore zone, and prom stuff. I don’t feel like I did too bad on the chemistry test but I still do have my doubts…which I know I shouldn’t but I do. I hope for a better rest of the week!

  13. This week I rate myself a 4/5. ExploreZone went very well, but I was not fully prepared enough. I had to work through lunch to make more solution for the kids. The ACT took much of my energy on Tuesday, and my track meet was okay after that. Although ExploreZone was crazy, it was also very fun. I could tell that the kids were having fun. In order to plan more ahead for events like this, I am going to prepare the stuff I need more in advance, so I know how much and how long it will take. Overall, this week was very good, insightful, and fun. I know now how to better prepare my time in stressful times!

  14. i rate myself a 4/5 this week. although are classes were limited because of the act, i had fun during explore zone and we succeeded with each group in presenting.

  15. I rate myself a 3/5 this week the test was pretty hard but I had fun with explorer zone and learned some new stuff while attending it I also think I did well with the new lesson this week

  16. This week I would rate myself a 4.35/5.00. We have not learned very much this week in any of our classes, but sometimes our minds need a slight break in order to process all the information we have learned prior. I did well on the ACT, despite not receiving the score I was attempting to attain, at least in the math section. Unfortunately, I am approximately 85% sure I duplicated my score from December, but this is probably because I did not study in any way, shape, or form. Also, I am filled with anticipation to receive my score on our most recent chemistry test, as I feel I performed adequately. However, there was one discrepancy I encountered on the test, acetic acid. I was fearful of this compound from the beginning; I even asked about it the night before. I wrote my answer as what you said was the correct answer, so I do not think I can miss it, even though the internet claims the hydrogen ion should be bonded to the single bonded oxygen. Upon further consideration, that does make sense if you consider which oxygen is more electronegative and therefore more attractive for a positive hydrogen ion. On the other hand, I really enjoyed ExploreZone today, especially since the kids really seemed to enjoy our exhibit. This was probably just due to the large quantities of fire that we were producing, but I can not blame them for liking fire. I am a little bit of a pyromaniac myself. Just kidding. One of my favorite aspects of Explore Zone was the improvisations that I was able to do today with certain parts of our exhibit. It really allowed me to experience what scientists feel like coming up with ideas for experiments. I tried blowing the fire out of my hand on a number of occasions, but it only worked about 60% of the time. We eventually identified the cause of failure as being the extinguishing of the flame by the high velocity of the powder. ExploreZone did not align with my pre-conceived notions; instead, it greatly surpassed them. I did not expect the kids to be so invigorated to ask and answer questions about why things were happening, not to mention the excitement over seeing a home-made flamethrower. Their inquiry truly gives me hope for the upcoming generations of scientists who might one day make a paradigm-shifting discovery. Anyway, I am grateful that I got to run such an exhilarating exhibit and that I got to do it with my friends. I would like to give a major shoutout to JFlow, Carson Whalen, and Jada Bunch for being the best assistants I could ask for. Also, shoutout to Ms. Skinner and Ms. Davis for helping organize ExploreZone and making sure we all had fun. On a different note, I am looking forward to the rest of the year in chemistry, especially the formidable chemistry project. Mr. Morris’s project due date clued us in as to when the project will be assigned, but do not accuse him of leaking anything. He did not leak this information. I merely used the famous inductive reasoning methodology to estimate when the project will be assigned based on the fact that Mr. Morris said he had to consult you before assigning his project. In addition to the project, I am looking forward to furthering my knowledge of chemical reactions and their associated equations. Well, I felt like writing a massive web post today, so here it is.

  17. This week I rate myself a 4.99/5.00. Explorezone was SO much fun and very exhausting. I’m struggling to keep myself awake just to write this. While there was lots of prep and hard work put into preparing and getting everything ready, It was all worth it to see the reactions of all the children’s faces when they saw the different flames growing and shrinking. While this week was truly amazing nothing is every perfect, thus the reason behind the oh so close to a perfect rating.

  18. This week I rate myself a 5/5. I believe I did very well at paying attention to note taking. I also think I did very well when helping at the explorer zone. it was really fun and I want to do it again.

  19. This week I would rate myself a 5/5. I really enjoyed explore zone and working with the little kids. I also enjoyed being able to used what we have been learning this year to show how something happens and how God is in everystep.

  20. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. I think I did pretty good on the test I think I should have just studied more. But explorer zone was really fun and I can’t wait for the weekend!!

  23. I rate myself 4/5 this week. Explore Zone was fun and will do it again senior year. Balancing the ACT, track meets, and multiple tests and quizzes this week was really challenging but I got done. The chemistry test was for sure the hardest but I hope it went well.

  24. this week i rerate myself a 3/5 because explore zone went smoothly, but it was very exhausting and the lack of sleep makes me worry for my grade on my chemistry test I’m going to take today. Anyway, have a great weekend!!!

  25. I rate this week a 4/5. It was a short class week but i had a lot of fun at explorer zone. I learned a lot and had fun instructing the younger kids.

  26. I rate myself a 3.5/5 for this week. The New York trip made preparing for ExploreZone extremely stressful, but I was thankfully able to get everything done. I wish I had been more prepared, but I believe everything went as smoothly as it could have considering the circumstances! I’m just glad I made it out without any major injuries!

  27. i would rate myself a 2/5 this week. I am not ready for my test which would be my fault. i feel that i could have tried to manage my time better. but explorer zone was so much fun! i loved to help the kids learn more about the world around us.

  28. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. Since I missed a few days, I’m kind of stressed about getting my work caught up. I hopefully will be able to do well on the test when I make it up. I also enjoyed explore zone and it went really well for my group.

  29. This week I would rate myself a 4/5/ This week was a lot of fun, besides this next text. The test was not easy and definitely was not fun. I had a lot of fun with explore zone on Thursday. I enjoyed seeing how all the kids were amazed with the virtual reality.

  30. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. The explore zone was tiring but fun to do. The test we did I thought I could have done better on it if I put a tad bit more studying in it.

  31. This week I rate myself a 4/5. The test was difficult, but I studied very hard. i think I did well! I had a lot fun working at Explore Zone. I really feel like I learned a lot and made friends with a lot of little kids! haha 🙂

  32. This week, I rate myself a 4/5. I missed the first two days, but I didn’t really need them to prepare for my ExploreZone exhibit. ExploreZone went very well!! The kids seemed to love the VR and learning about the Aurora Borealis. Because I want to become a teacher, I really enjoyed acting as a teacher for the day.

  33. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I don’t feel great about the test and I thought it was kind of hard. But I had a fun time at explore zone and I learned more about science and had fun with the kids.

  34. This week I rate myself a 4/5 because I thought I prepared for ExploreZone well, but I ended up needing more iron. However, I feel that I was able to overcome this and complete ExploreZone successfully by choosing what grades would make their own hand warmers and what grades wouldn’t. I’m proud of myself for working hard and trying to do what was best for the glory of God and the kids. I’m glad this chaotic week is over!

  35. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week. ExplorerZone was fun. And I got to help Carson Fox. I also learned some things when helping other people. But this week in general was fun and I feel I did good.

  36. I would rate this week a 4/5 because of explorer zone and the test we had on Monday which I hope I did good

  37. this week i would rate myself a 3/5. this week i wasn’t in class much because of the New York Choir Trip until tuesday. Even then I was working explore zone Thursday which was Amazing!

  38. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I stressed about explore zone a lot but I surprised myself with how prepared I was ahead of time so I never felt super overwhelmed and I am really proud of my exhibit and how I was able to teach it.

  39. IT’S FRIDAY, Y’ALL!!! I gotta rate myself a 4.99/5 this week because it was AWESOME (a side from the blood, sweat, and no tears). To start off, I actually finished the chemistry test, unlike the past 20 times. And the best part was Explore Zone, which was probably a favorite for all of you. The best part was the little kids. I could care less about the sixth graders, but the little kids were just too cute! That about sums it up for me, so EVERYBODY HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND!!!

  40. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. I did have to get out of habit of being a chemistry student when practicing to teach the kids but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this experience! I hope God’s glory was shown through Explore Zone and I cannot wait to do it again my senior year!!!!

  41. This week I give myself a 3/5 because I do not feel good about the problem portion of the test but I feel like I did well on the multiple choice. I also enjoyed explore zone and finally being able to experience the stressful fun.

  42. This week I rate myself a 4/5. This has got to be one of the most chaotic and stressful weeks this school year. Missing class for two days this week really made me stressed out about Explorezone but I feel as if I did pretty good considering the circumstances. Even though I ran out of some supplies (which we found to day 🙃), I believe me and my amazing assistants figured out a way to keep the situation under control. Although Explorezone was really fun, I am relieved it is over and done with.

  43. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. I think that I did well on my test and i took good notes when we started a new section. I also had an amazing time at explore zone.

  44. This week I rate myself a 5/5. The main reason for this rating is the lack of stuff we did in class in regards to regular school work. There was the ACT, however, and it went swimmingly. I am hoping that my score exceeded 30. As for EZ, I was a bit late getting my Explore Zone exhibit together, it did work out in the end.

    .

  45. This week I rate it a 4/5. Explore Zone was amazing and for my first time being in it I had so much fun! seeing the kids absorb all the information we taught them and also them having fun was enough to bring a smile to my face. not only were the kids learning but we were also learning new information from other exhibits and how to be problem solvers if there was a complication with our exhibit. I was little nervous from the chemistry test and the ACT but Explore Zone made my week a whole lot better.

  46. This week in physics was really good. I had a lot of fun with explore zone, and I feel like it went really well. I was very tired by the end of it though! I got kind of nervous when the hovercraft broke but I’m glad we were able to be flexible and quickly repair it.

  47. This week I rate myself a 4/5 because I think I accomplished and learned a lot. I think that I obtained a passing grade on the most recent examination. I learned a lot during Explore Zone as well. I learned how to teach kids with enthusiasm and also how to deal with a long day of doing the same thing. I hope to learn more about bonds next week and do well on the future examination.

  48. i would rate myself at a 3/5 this week. the test wasnt too bad but i almost didnt finish and explore zone was fun as well.
