Hon Chemistry 2-7-19 d & f-block Intro & a Look Back at the s-block elements

HON CHEMISTRY: Wow! Did you every dream there was that much interesting and important stuff to know about the s, p, d, and f block elements?! Here’s the introduction to the d & f blocks, and then, our look at the s-block slides to clarify some information and filled in gaps you might have had.

As you are studying, make sure you go back and practice figuring out the period, block, group, and type of element from the electron configuration. And don’t forget the topics I asked you to research for yourself that you will find on the Chapter 5 Stuff to Know Sheet on Edline!!

To make your research even more interesting(!), there are some really interesting videos with tons of useful information at this site: http://periodicvideos.com/ Go pop some popcorn and have some movie time!

The videos that you must watch from the s-block for the test are potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

The elements from the d block that I especially want you to watch are copper and mercury. And there are other interesting ones you might like to watch just for fun!

The videos on from the f-Block that you need to watch are: neodymium, thorium, and uranium.

And just a heads up – the videos you need to watch for the p-Block are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and chlorine. http://periodicvideos.com/

  1. this week i would rate myself a 3/5 because I did fine taking notes but I missed two days of class this week due to my sickness. I hope to feel better next week so I can make up the lab I missed today.

  2. This week, I rate myself a 4/5. I did pretty well finding the S and D blocks on the Element Scavenger Hunt. I stayed on top of the work and am working steadily on it. The lab today was very fun. I didn’t read it before hand so I felt slightly panicked; today has taught me to be sure and read the labs in the future. It was slightly more difficult without Savanna (RIP) but Meredith and I got through it without burning anything.

  3. This week I rate myself a 5/5 because I did well with what I had. Since I was sick on Monday, I missed class, but I got on the website and made up for the notes I missed. I feel that I was able to keep up for the most part as well. I am very proud of making up all of my work in a timely fashion, and I plan to continue this in the future. One thing I learned this week, however, was not to waste Litmus paper and sticks haha

  4. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I enjoyed (haha get it) learning about all the different people who contributed to the modern periodic table as well as doing the Element Reverse Scavenger Hunt (I find it very stress-free and relaxing). Observing the reactions, or lack there of, in the lab today was cool however, despite reading the lab beforehand I did get a little confused regarding the directions and whether or not we needed to test the ph of the hydrochloric acid reactions. To prevent confusion during future labs I plan on reading the lab at least two or three times before arriving to class.

  5. This week I struggled a little bit with the element scavenger hunt because I worked on each section the day before it was due. I plan to get ahead this weekend on it so I’m not scrambling for answers the night before. A goal for this upcoming week is to begin studying for the chapter test that’safter this upcoming week. I’ve already made index cards for some of my notes so I feel like my goal will be easy to complete!! Also the lab today was so much fun!!!! It was cool to see how the calcium reacted differently with water and HCL acid!

  6. I’d rate myself a 5/5 for this week. It has been a really calm and stress free week in chemistry. I have really enjoyed doing the research for the element handbook. The highlight of my week was the lab we did on Friday. I loved seeing how Calcium reacted in the HCL acid and using the burning wood to test for gas. It was really cool since that’s how we first learned about the elements. Scientists did all kinds of different tests and wrote down their observations. They then started noticing certain trends and patterns the elements shared helping them create the periodic table. I can’t wait for next week.

  7. I read myself a 3/5 this week. I missed one day and due to poor time management fell behind on my work. However, I was quite productive in Friday’s lab. I hope to do better and catch up next week.

  8. For this week I would rate myself 4/5. I didn’t miss any homework assignments and I enjoyed what we talked about in class Friday. The only thing I could have done better on is my element scavenher hunt. I put a few really short answers that I need to correct before Tuesday, but besides that it has been an awesome week in Chemistry.

  9. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. I stayed on top of the work for the reverse element scavenger hunt and even finished it a day early! I also managed to do my book homework in advance this week! I plan to begin studying early for the upcoming test instead of studying (and panicking) the night before like I normally do.

  10. This week I rate myself a 3/5. This week my disfunctional sleep schedule has really hit me hard, which led to me procrastinating and not giving my best effort towards my school work. This weekend, in addition to attempting to fix my sleep schedule (open to any tips), I plan to begin studying for the upcoming test. I am glad that we got the reverse scavenger hunt back becuase, although I put several words in each blank, I would like to review it to ensure that my answers are as thorough and correct as possible.
