PHYSICS 11-14-18 Vertical Fish Forces & Forces with Pulleys and Friction

PHYSICS: Not sure if you’d ever find a fish on an elevator, but you sure could treat the problem like it was! Here another look at that problem, and then, a different take on forces – an application of horizontal forces, vertical forces, friction, all at once!

Wow! Amazing job solving these problems – can you now go see if you can solve them by yourself? God bless you as you study! I’ll be praying for you!

SNOW UPDATE – Help session and test are still tomorrow – unless by some remote chance we are out of school because of the weather. In that case, we’ll move everything to Friday.

  1. This week was definitely a fun one; it included semi-snow days, synthetic snow, and baby diapers, all of which I am thankful for. Also, I am thankful for the opportunity to go to a school with a faculty that is willing to go above and beyond in order to prepare their students for life instead of merely doing their jobs. In addition to this, I am thankful for the infusion of Christ with our daily lives at NCS, as this is not a blessing that many possess. Finally, I am thankful for my family and all the support they give me no matter how bad I mess up. Have a stupendous Thanksgiving, Ms. Skinner!

  2. This week I am thankful for the hecticness that Thanksgiving break has brought. With all the rushing around and all the due dates quickly approaching, I found a calm in the eye of the storm and was peaceful in it all. I have learned more this week than I think I have in my entire life. I learned that there is always time to sit down, breath, and take a break. There is always time where you can be with your loved ones and everyone enjoys one another’s presence, and if “there isn’t any time to do that right now” then you can always make time. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break, Ms. Skinner.

  3. This week I feel like I finally understood the chapter, but then as soon as the test hit I forgot again. I do feel like I did pretty good on the test, however I need to make sure I manage my time better since I was almost not able to completely finish the test. Now I know this for the next upcoming test and I should do a lot better than I have before. I am looking forward to a much needed break next week from all this madness that is school.

  4. This week has been pretty much crazy as usual! Well actually probably even more crazy than usual because of SNOW in NOVEMBER!!! And our test being moved around all week… The plus side of being unsure of when the test was was that I was really prepared going into it. I reworked the problems on Monday night so that way I was able to focus on the conceptual stuff Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you again for letting me borrow the Conceptual Physics book! It was a great help for nailing down all the concepts behind the problems! I will most likely borrow it again sometime! On the actual test, I’m very proud of myself for remaining relatively calm throughout the day leading up to the test and for managing my time very well during the test! I was actually able to finish, which is a huge starting point! I’m so thankful for you Ms. Skinner and Happy Thanksgiving! 🙂

  5. What a crazy week! We had homework revisions, a lab, a surprise November flurry, a cancelled help session, and a TEST! On top of that, I experienced added stress because I had to make up my test seventh period. If that’s not hectic, I don’t know what is haha! Thankfully, the Lord has preserved me through it all, and I will be able to relaxfully enjoy Thanksgiving food YAY! I didn’t feel too great about the multiple choice this time, even though I thought I had conceptual stuff nailed down. I did, however, actually finish the test with five minutes to spare, and I was super proud of that–a new record for me! I tried to look back over some of the multiple choice in that time, but I don’t think it helped much–I guess in order to finish the test, I had to spend a little less time obsessing over the multiple choice. We shall see about the results… at least we have +10 Science in the News! Very thankful for that! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Ms. Skinner!

  6. I just wrote an entire web post and it ERASED! Ahg! Here we go again. I am so proud of how hard I studied for this past test. I really struggled with this chapter in the beginning, especially the math problems, but I worked super hard, and I really think I understand them now! However, I don’t think I performed well on the test. I got super anxious for some reason, and that usually results in me not thinking through multiple choice as well as I should. Regardless of my grade though, I feel like I have a really good understanding of this chapter, and I’m proud of my perseverance in studying for it.

  7. I studied EXTREMELY hard for this last test, but I honestly don’t feel super confident in it. Time seemed to get to me towards the end, and a few of the multiple choice questions were pretty tricky. I honestly am just hoping I get a lot of partial credit for the last two math problems because I did not have time to finish them completely. However, I did enjoy the design challenge today! Our final trial (though it was not timed) seemed to actually succeed! We went through many prototypes before our final one. Happy thanksgiving Ms. Skinner!

  8. This week has been insane. I was very grateful for the late arrival, since I got to sleep in an hour. I felt like I understood the chapter, but I panicked a bit on the test. I need to work on time management and organization. I actually really enjoyed the design challenge today! While we didn’t win, I had fun trying to figure it out. Have a great Thanksgiving, Ms. Skinner!

  9. This week was test week. After the review day understood what I needed to study and I actually think I did pretty well on the test. I need to work on my time management still. It was better than last time but I need to take less time on the critical thinking probably along with the math problems. The design challenge was well challenging and kind of fun. Happy Thanksgiving and who would have thought it would snow in November.

  10. This week in Physics, I definitely struggled in making time for myself to study. I thought all of the homework problems were really simple for the most part, but I seemed to blank on the test. I spent way too much time on some of the problems, leading me to run out of time while working them. I enjoyed the design challenge and I hope that I can make up for this chapter in the upcoming weeks. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

  11. This was my best week in physics so far. I have been doing well on my homework and I felt extremely confident going into my test. I finally was able to finish the test except the problem I’m aloud to skip. My goal is to be able to do alll including the skip. I feel really confident with my test and I hope for a higher grade than normal. Also I was looking for to the design challenge lab in class. It did not disappoint me either. Great way to finish the week.

  12. This week was a solid 4/5 stars. I have began to understand how to study for tests more than the night before. To relieve the anxiety of cramming with the freedom of studying two or three days before the actual test is a great feeling. Even though I felt prepared for the test, I worry that I again (as I always do) psyched myself out of doing the best I could have possible done. I know I probably did not do as well as I wanted to on that test, but the preparation for it and the design challenge we performed the day afterwards was very satisfying to compete. although we did’t successfully complete the challenge today, I became a stronger learner and adapter and altogether designer from my experiences of shipping cargo down a mountain with only a pulley, some string, scissors, and some weights. Thank you for reading this, and I hope you have a great break.

  13. This week I learned just how much I have to be thankful for in Chemistry. One thing I’m very thankful for is the classmates I have for Chemistry this year. Their help and encouragement is so important to me. I don’t know what I do without them. Early morning help sessions are another thing I’m grateful for. At the help sessions, I’ll start to understand a concept I don’t I would get without the extra practice. Finally, I’m so thankful for a teacher that actually cares about us and wants to see us succeed.

  14. This week was crazy. From snow in November to, to the test, and the design challenge, this week has definitely been interesting. I understood everything in the chapter really well and I studied really hard. I understood the conceptual problems and the math problems more than I ever have in a chapter, but it still wasn’t enough on that test. I knew how to do everything on the test I just didn’t have enough time. That’s how it is for a lot of tests I take. It’s really frustratong because I just don’t know how I can improve my time management. I know there probably is stuff I can do I just don’t know about it. Now that I know for certain that it’s my time management I’m going to work on it and hopefully be prepared for future tests to come.
