Chemistry 10-22-18 Chapter 1 Test Overview

  1. This week I want to relate my application to all of the types of Chemistry, and the 3 ways scientists do their work. I found all of the different types of Chemistry to be very interesting, because they really follow along with whatever they specifically talk about. For example, how biochemistry is the chemistry of all living things and that applies to how a pain reliever knows how to go to the pain receptor to relieve the pain. Which is in humans, who are living things.

  2. Chapter 1 taught me many things that I can apply to my everyday life. I enjoyed learning about the different changes of state. When a solid changes to a liquid it is called melting. Sublimation is the changing of a solid to a gas. Dry ice is an example of sublimation because a solid is turning into a gas. When frost forms on a windshield, a gas is turned into a solid. This process is called deposition.

  3. This week I applied a lot of what I learned in Chapter 1 for the Chapter 1 test. I really enjoyed Chapter one and realized how many things in Chemistry affect our every day life. For example we use basic research every single day when we are doing research to gain knowledge about things. Another thing I learned was how to tell if an element is a nonmetal, metalloid, or metal. A metal is a good conductor of heat and electricity, is malleable and most metals are solids at room temperature. A nonmetal is not a good conductor of heat and electricity, if its a solid it is brittle and most are gases. A metalloid has both the properties of metals and those of nonmetals.

  4. I applied what I learned in chemistry when looking for the elements on the periodic table during the test and even after. Since we learned the element symbols, some properties, and classifications (metal, nonmetal, metalloid) of the elements, I was able to locate the elements on the periodic table much faster than if I did not learn these things. It was also necessary I know the difference between a group and a period when trying to find elements.

  5. There are a lot of things in Chapter 1 that you could make an application to. The main one for me was the periods and groups of the periodic table. If you were given a period or group it was easy to find that element because I knew what periods and groups were. It was also easy to know them to know whether the element was a nonmetal, metal, mattalloid, or maybe even a gas. This application will be very helpful for the rest of the year and for other types of science.

  6. This week I applied what I’ve been studying and taking notes on for our Chapter 1 test and feel pretty good about it. I liked learning about the periodic table and all the elements and how we use them in labs and understand how they are going to react. I applied what I learned in my 8th grade science class to help me understand and recall all the elements information that we needed to know for our test. Overall this week was pretty good.

  7. This week I have been studying a lot more for my test and doing my homework because it’s the little thing that count. So doing my homework will pull my grade up a whole lot more.

  8. One of the main things in the chapter that you could apply is if something was a chemical or physical change. It was important to know so that when it pops later in the year you will know it. Another thing we will apply is the types of research which shows up on a daily basis.

  9. the main thing I learned and can apply was basic research. is is something we use every day in making observations and learning new things. also about chemical and physical changes, you can apply it by saying solid liquid and gas is a change but not a change of state so its physical. and that rust forms which makes it a chemical change.

  10. One application for what we did today with crushing the water bottles could be in divers. Divers have to have a way to be able to float and sink at will, which means they have to have a variable density. Obviously this can’t be done with water because it’s boiling point is very high compared to the temperature of the ocean, but I think the concept would work well with a material that either sublimes or boils at a temperature of around 50°C. That temperature is easily attainable with either exothermic (preferably reversible) chemical reactions or simply by running electricity through a coil or something. When the diver wants to go up, he presses a button with turns the substance into a gas, inflating some sort of airtight, highly reinforced balloon and thus decreasing his overall density and allowing him to float. I doubt this would be a viable way to dive deep though, since the high pressures would prevent the balloons from inflating as much. It also doesn’t really allow for much fine-tuning of how fast you float.

  11. the main thing i’ve learned and will be able to apply later on is chemical and physical change. this will help you in all sciences you take later in high school and in college. it will also help if you are doing any kind of experiment with solids, liquids, and gases.

  12. I have made an application this week by knowing the difference between a physical change and a chemical change. I applied this in our lab “crushing the water bottle” by determining when we boiled our water if it was a physical or chemical change!!! Have a great weekend!!!

  13. This week we had to apply a lot of what we learned in the past in order to accomplish the lab today. We had to know the definitions of condensation and evaporation in order to give a great explanation for why the bottle was able to shrink. We also had to know what chemical and physical changes are, and how to read the periodic table of elements; which we learned prior to this week. In the end everything we have learned has been applied sometime this week, or even in our lifetime.

  14. This week I was able to apply what we have been learning in Chapter 1 into the lab we did today in class. I found it very interesting that I was able to recreate the condensing of a water bottle by just put the bottle into warm water and letting the bottle expand. Then quickly put the bottle into the ice water to let the bottle cool down and collapse.

  15. I think the most important thing that I can apply to myself from chapter 1 is basic research. it’s something that we do everyday in class. also learning how to identify if something is a chemical or physical change was very beneficial for the lab we did today.

  16. i applied what i learned from chapter one on the experiment from today. it was really cool to see how the knowledge of evaporation helped cause the bottle to expand. watching the bottle condense when it was in the water was really cool also.

  17. There are so many things that apply to our everyday lives that are in chapter one of chemistry. One example of an application found in my life is whenever I get out of the shower and look at the mirror, there is condensation on my mirror. Another example is that I can now apply my knowledge of the states of matter and identify that frost on my windshield is the deposition of a gas to a solid. As I learn more and more, I begin to see chemistry in everything around me.

  18. I have learned lots of things that I can apply in this chapter. One of my favorite things I learned that I could apply is the difference between a physical and chemical change. I see different physical and chemical changes in my everyday life. It’s so neat to finally know the difference between the two and apply that to my everyday life.

I learned a ton of things I could use as my application from this chapter, the most important one tho to me was the periodic table, learning about all the elements and their periods and families helped me out because I was able to study them and make a good grade on the quiz, because I know the difference of metalloids metals and nonmetals I know what is good or not for certain experiments

  20. i learned a lot in chapter 1 and one think that i can apply is chemical and physical change. one way i apply chemical change is by burning wood in our fireplace and the wood combusting and leaving ashes and putting off heat and light. one way i apply physical change is when it gets cold and the water outside freezes into ice

  21. I can use many things as my application from chapter 1, but the most important one to me is types of research. We need to know these because it will pop up many times throughout our lives. I also applied evaporation in the lab we did. Evaporation caused the bottle to expand, and that was really cool.

Research is very important and we need to know how to do it because it could come into our lives at any moment. I also applied heat and cold to a bottle and it made it expand then crumple up.

  23. The main thing I learned this week is the difference between physical and chemical changes. Like when we were heating the water and pouring it into the water bottle. Then you put the bottle in ice water which made the bottle shrink up.

  24. This week I applied all that I had learned on the multiple choice portion of the test. I learned about endothermic and exothermic reactions. I applied this in the lab we did to expand and crush the water bottle. I also applied what I learned about Evaporation in the lab. I can also see many different chemical and physical changes in everyday life.

  25. In this chapter we learned about the Elements and their symbols, and some facts about some elements. This is applicable to me because I now notice when certain elements are being used for different tasks, and why their helpful for that task, for example, Silicon is used in its computer because it conducts heat well.

  26. Learning all the elements from the periodic table is something that I think will help me a lot and i can apply this knowledge a lot. Now i have a better understanding of where all the elements are on the table and if the elements are metals, nonmetals, metalloids, or noble gases. I applied my knowledge of location of the elements on the test and it helped me finished my test faster. Also, knowing the symbols for all of the elements can help me apply what I know if I see the symbols later on in the future.

  27. The main thing i learned this week was some of the elements and their symbols. I hope to learn more of them and apply them to future labs, tests, and quizes.

  28. In this chapter I learned about the states of matter and applied it to my life with a better understanding. I see on my cup the changing of a gas to a liquid – condensation. Another example is the copper on part of the roof at my home in which the color has changed to green – oxidation. I see many elements in my everyday life.

  29. This week I learned How to follow directions and apply what I have learned for the get ready for it day. I learned How to trace my steps, go back, and fix my mistakes effectively when necessary. I also Got faster as i went Due to better understanding of the problem.

  30. What I applied from chapter 1 would probably have to be that everything around me is made out of chemicals and chemicals reactions occur or are made every day to make things that we use in every day life such as toothpaste or ink

  31. This week I was able to apply what we have been learning in the chapter into the lab we did on Thursday in class with the water bottles. We simulated a warm evening and a cold morning woth the hot and cold water to make the bottle expand and condense. water and letting the bottle expand. We got water that was almost boiling and ice water. We placed the bottle in the hot water and quickly removed it and placed the bottle into the ice water. That caused the cottle to condense. I also got a better understanding of the difference between physical changes and chemical changes. Its cool, now I can see them throughout the days.

  32. This week I applied what i learned from chapter 1 and the test to the labs when did the past two days. Without the information i got out of chapter 1 these labs would have been impossible. I learned time management and how to make use of my time. Also that no step is wasted in lab.

  33. This week i was able to apply the concepts i learned in chapter one and apply them in a lab this week. i applied what i leaned and was able to crush a bottle with out using any part of my body.

  34. This week I applied what I had learned in labs and from the book lessons. The lab was hard at first figuring out how to test how the water bottles got smaller but once thought of, we got the job done

  35. This week I had to apply a lot of what I learned in Chapter 1 to the labs we did. In order to be able to make the water bottle shrink, you had to know the different phase changes (solid to liquid, liquid to gas, gas to solid, liquid to solid, gas to liquid, and solid to gas). You had to know about endothermic and exothermic as well as the energy in a solid, liquid, or gas. If we would have not learned these things previously, I would not have succeeded this week on the labs.

  36. I have learned how to apply many things in this chapter. I enjoyed our class activities on Thursday and Friday because we got to come up with your own plan to complete them. I also enjoyed learning about all of the changes of state because you can use that knowledge to explain everyday occurrences. I look forward to more interactive activities like in the past week.

Learning most of the elements, discussing the differences between chemical and physical changes, and the information we learned about copper, phosphorus, and silicon are the things that stuck out to me the most and the things I now see and can apply every day. For instance, I was able to name the elements right off the bat when you were asking several while we were taking notes one day. Knowing these right off the top of my head will help me A LOT in chemistry. Also, the physical and chemical changes really had my attention because I see changes every day but now I can know what kind of changes they are and all the reasons why. I literally have all the reasons like stuck in my brain and anytime I see a candle being lit I’m like “up! that’s a chemical change! it produced light!”

  38. I applied what I learned in chapter 1 to get the labs done by knowing the difference of a chemical change and physical change from the lab with the water bottle.

  39. We have learned many things this week and from this chapter. I feel that a major application for me for this week would be learning what periods and groups are. It really helped knowing what I was looking at on the chapter one test when it had questions involving that. Another major application for me was from the lab on Thursday. I applied knowledge from chapter 1 on such things to prepare me for the lab on how to crush a bottle without crushing it with our hands and why the bottle shrinks. I believe this week was good and I learned a lot. Have a great weekend!!

  40. This week I applied what i learned in the lab and now know that that is why water bottles in my truck shrink up as well as knowing that I need to apply the elemental table to my memory so that I know how to use them for the rest of the your in your class.

  41. we learned so much in chapter 1 that can be applied everyday. For the labs we completed this week, we had to apply the information we learned about state changes, energy in these states, and endothermic and exothermic.

  42. This week i learned how to create condensation from a water bottle. This chapter has taught me how to apply whether melting ice is a physical or chemical change. I have also learned how to apply the periodic table and its elements.

  43. This week while we were working on crushing a bottle without physical force I learned an important lesson that I need to carry with me throughout my life. I was so used to following instructions step by step that I wasn’t thinking for myself as much as I should have been. Without detailed instructions I was forced to apply what I know about how liquids react with differing temperatures. This gave me a more successful final result and I was able to gain a better understanding of the material.

  44. I have learned a lot that I can apply to my everyday life. Especially with the changes of state of matter. I can unserstand where frost comes from and why bottles can crush without physical force in my car.

  45. In Chapter 1 there are a lot of things that you can make your application. For me, my application is the elements of the periodic table. I know some of the elements on the periodic table already so that made my studying a little easier. What confused me was the difference between groups and periods, I needed to learn how to identify them. Knowing if the element was a metal, metalloid, or a nonmetal was kind of easy too. Knowing that a metal is a good conductor of heat, metalloids have properties of both a metal and a nonmetal, and a nonmetal is a poor conductor of heat. Both of these applications will continue to help me throughout me course in Chemistry and I will continue to improve.

  46. Throughout chapter 1 we learned many things that can apply to everyday life and how things happen with reason. If I learn chapter 1 and other chapters to come i can apply my knowledge from them and use them for test and everyday life.

  47. I have learned so much this year already in chemistry that I could apply and this week I had to apply some of that knowledge and create our own lab. We had to learn how to collapse a water bottle with only a few hints. I hope to be able to apply more of the stuff learn into class work.

  48. I made an application whilst cooking. This week, I made brownies. I determined it was an exothermic reaction due to heat being released. I’ve learned a lot from chemistry this year and am excited to learn more.
