Chemistry 9-26-18 Making Excel & Google Sheets Graphs AND Graphing Exercise 1 – 2

CHEMISTRY: Today you are going to learn (or review) how to make graphs on Excel (or other data analysis software) by watching the video below at your own pace.

Here are the instructions for Wednesday. (You are going to be dreaming about graphs before it’s all over!)

IMPORTANT: Don’t let the assignment confuse you! What it basically means is that you will make two graphs – one hand drawn and one Excel. And then, you will answer some questions about the graphs and turn in the whole assignment as a PDF – it must be submitted by this coming Tuesday, October 2, 8:00 A.M.

You can do this assignment at school or at home with your own computer. If you use any device other than a PC or any graphing tool other than Excel or Google Sheets, you may need to modify the instructions to fit your device.

  1. Under the worksheet tab, open these three graphing handouts – note, there is no handout for Google Sheets:
  2. Watch one of the vodcasts below for a tutorial on how to make graphs in Excel or Google Sheets.
    • My advice is to use a split screen view on the laptop with the video on one side and Excel open on the other side of your laptop screen. Watch the video and at the same time pause it as you follow along with the steps in Excel. Holler if you need me to show you how to do a split screen view. Or Google it! 🙂
  3. When you begin working on the Graphing Exercise 1 assignment, pay very close attention to the instructions. Also, pay close attention to the sheet on How to Construct a Line Graph, and How to Make a Best Fit (Scatter Plot) Line Graph in Excel 2010 – UPDATED to make sure you have all the parts of the graph covered.
  4. Google Sheets only: If you ever need to add subscript or superscripts to the axis labels in Google sheets, try copying and pasting whatever number you need from this set in to the axis title in Google sheets: ⁰¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉
  5. Now go forth and conquer graphs!!

  1. I would rate myself at a 4/5 this week. I figured out how to do the graphs and it is really easy. I don’t know how I did with the Lab that we typed, but I hope I did good.

  2. I would rate myself at a 4/5 this week. I figured out how to do the graphs and it is really easy. I don’t know how I did with the Lab that we typed, but I hope I did good.

  3. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week i figured out how to do the graphs pretty easily, but i am confused on the picture of the density problem and what i did wrong.

  4. This week, I would rate myself a 3/5. I would rate myself this because I just wasn’t feeling it this week. I was tired and didn’t feel like doing work. Even though this week was a struggle, I still learned a lot. One of the things I learned was how to work google docs, sheets, and google drive.

  5. I rate myself a 3/5 this week because I have done pretty well with the graphs and things so far. I need to watch the video again today in class to help me through it. I am going to finish my graphs this weekend.

  6. A Poff C2

this week was easy but tough. i rate myself a 4/5 because i got everything except the graph on google spreadsheets but after watching the video again i figured out what i was doing wrong and everything kind of flowed after that. The lab was kind of easy just figuring out how to get my pictures there was a struggle until i realized its not like the regular picture upload.

  7. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week. I am having a pretty easy time with the graphing exercises and doing good on them. I have also stayed on track with my assignments and homework.

  8. I rate myself a 4/5 this week because I completed the ring challenge. I also was able to perform well on all of my school assignments while keeping up with my extracurricular activities. Lastly, I feel that once I study for the elements quiz, I will be very prepared.

  9. This week I would rate myself a 5/5. Recently I was thinking back to the beginning of the year, where you told us that this year you demand our best, whatever that may be. I realized that so far this year I’ve just been giving 50%, and that’s not what you asked for. So, this week I’ve been trying to give the maximum effort possible both in class and out of it. I’ve begun memorizing the elements, common polyatomic ions and their charges, and common monotonic ions and their charges. I sincerely apologize for not giving Chemistry the effort it deserves so far this year, but from now on I’ll do my very best to give it my best.

    • This week I would give myself a 4/5. I’ve been staying on top of my homework and I’ve been figuring out how to do the graphing. I hope to have graphing mastered by next week.

  10. I rate my self a 4/5. I have done pretty good so far on the graphing exercises and i will go and rewatch the video to make sure i am still on track and hope to continue while i finish on the weekend.

  12. I would rate myself a 4/5 because I’m understanding how to do the graphs and set them up. I felt like I did a good job on the hand drawn graph. I only had a couple of things to correct. The mass without a balance lab I worked hard on it and hope I did well on it.

  13. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week because I understood the hand drawn graph well and I feel like if I watch the graphing video again I can hopefully finish it correctly with no mistakes.

  14. i would rate myself a 3/5 this week. i really struggled on the graph we did on the computer. i think i did pretty good on the handwritten graph though 🙂

  15. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week. I understood how to draw the paper graph and am learning how to use the online graph. I am very thankful for the video on how to do the online graph. It is easy to come back to this video when I have questions. This has been a good week and I can not wait for next week.

  16. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week. I believe I did really well on the graphs especially the online graph (I got a fist bump which made me so happy). Even though I did really well there is always room for improvement. Ready for the rest of the week.

  17. this week i rate myself a 4/5 because i really understand the graphs we are doing in class and i am confident i can now do one by myself, since i have watched the video 3 times.

  18. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. This week has been hectic but very productive. I think i did a pretty good job on our first lab that we had ti use google drive for. I had trouble with the graphs at first and then i learned from my mistakes and applied my newfound knowledge to fix it. I hope to keep learning and discovering new things in chemistry.

  19. i rate myself at a 2/5 this week i am having trouble with the online graphing and not really sure what to do but i think i did good on the first lab write up

  20. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. Only because at first I got a little confused on the graphing exercise because I’m not that great at it. I’m thankful you do that video over the steps because that help me a lot.

  25. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. I think this week went smoothly and the only thing i had trouble with was with the graph. It’s all good though!! Have a great weekend!!

  26. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. Wilson and I got a little confused when doing the second part of our lab this week. I think we need to work on communicating better with each other. After we were both on the same page we were able to finish the lab with no difference in the initial and final mass. I also did pretty well on the elements quiz.

  27. I am giving myself a 4/5 for the week since I figured out how to do the graphs, the only trouble I had was finding things on the computer but that was just because I was rushing through it. I also need to learn to not be forgetful, but other than that the week went by pretty fast.

  30. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week because even though I was really worried, I did really well on both the pop quiz and the actual elements quiz. I accidentally forgot to put my name on the inside of one of my homeworks so I might end up getting points off for that, but besides that I kept track of everything we had to do. I had a lot of fun with the Conservation of Mass lab, and I didn’t have trouble designing the second part of the lab.

  31. I would rate myself a 4/5 this week due to the fact that I finished the graphing exercise rather early. I didn’t struggle comprehending any of the Google Sheets, so that is a major plus. However, I am wary of the element quiz, but I feel is if I buckle down I will do well on it.

  32. I would Rate myself a 3/5 this week because I am happy that you have helped me since i have Missed and i have Enjoyed the graphing unfortunately I’m a little more technologically challenged then i thought But we are working on that.
