Hon Chemistry 8-31-18 Another Look at Problem Solving

HON CHEMISTRY – Great job on the homework problems! Remember, in chemistry we use math as a tool, therefore we might work problems a little differently in chemistry than you do in your math class.

If you are converting, even if it’s not an “official SI conversion”, you MUST show your work using the Q Formula. When working other problems, don’t forget to follow these problem solving steps:

  • Analyze – write down what you’re given and what you’re looking for
  • Plan – write a formula where you isolate the unknown on one side by itself
  • Compute – plug in your data, numbers and units; then cancel the units, and if they cancel correctly, go on to the calculator. Be sure and give your answer what the correct units.
  • Evaluate – does your answer make sense, have you used the correct units, do you have the correct sig figs?

Have a great extra long weekend!!

  1. This week I would give myself 4/5 stars because I made a 100 on both of the SI Units quizzes, and I finished all of my measurements for the SI Scavenger Hunt with plenty of time to do the calculations and conversions this weekend.

  2. This week I was triumphant in learning what I did incorrectly when it came to reading directions and following them through. I learned to read the specifics and ask questions if needed. I did well in this because I evaluated what I did wrong and what I could do to fix it, and, in essence, that’s what problem solving is all about.

  3. This week I rate myself a 4/5 because while I didn’t do to well on the first SI quiz I made a 100 on the second one and I’ve learned that studyin for chemistry is actually studying and not just looking over it.

  4. I would rate myself 4/5 stars for this week because I made a 100 on both SI unit quizzes and because I did not procrastinate on the Scavenger Hunt like I usually would. Also, I feel like I did a good job on paying attention in class and keeping up with the assignments. One thing I could do better is to prepare more for the tests and quizzes because I usually do no more than reading over the material a few times, but I realize that this will not be effective in chemistry.

  5. this week I struggled with conversions and finishing homework. im going to take more notes and practice more problems to improve.

  6. This week I would rate myself a 3/5! I did not procrastinate with my SI Scavenger Hunt, which is very unusual because I usually tend to do the opposite, but I am trying to break that awful habit! This week I learned that I need to take the time to slowly read the directions on a quiz/test. By not reading the directions carefully, it made me make careless mistakes on the quiz I took on Thursday.

  7. I did really well on all my tests and quizzes this week especially my World History test. I did well this week because I studied thoroughly and accordingly for all my test. I hope I do just as well next week.

  8. This week was very challenging for me the problems have really changed the way I think about doing physics problems. I’m still struggling to stop trying to do the problems like how I would do them in math class. But I’m slowly but surely getting there. The design your owns labs has honestly been the best part I really enjoy problem solving so it’s realy cool when we get to do them. I have been great great at not procrastinating and I hope I can keep it up!

  9. This week i would rate myself a 2/5 being that i didn’t study for my quiz like i should have and didn’t do well on my homework either.

  10. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I made two 90s on my chemistry quizzes. I could have done better if I would have studied more.
