Chemistry 8-31-17 Using Density

CHEMISTRY – Hey guys, here’s a pic of some “high density” koi that I saw in Hawaii (at the Dole Pineapple Plantation, of all places!). Great review on density problems today, and more! Remember, in chemistry we use math as a tool, therefore we might work problems a little differently in chemistry than you do in your math class.

When working these problems, don’t forget to follow the problem solving steps we discussed today:

  • Analyze – write down what you’re given and what you’re looking for
  • Plan – write a formula where you isolate the unknown on one side by itself
  • Compute – plug in your data, numbers and units; then cancel the units, and if they cancel correctly, go on to the calculator. Be sure and give your answer what the correct units.
  • Evaluate – does your answer make sense, have you used the correct units, do you have the correct sig figs?

On a more practical side – and even better(!), can you now use what you’ve learned about density? Be sure and print the lab for tomorrow – thLAB: Building Your Balance.

Can’t wait to “watch” you work!

  1. I would rate this week a 3/5. I’m making careless mistakes a bit too often, so I’m going to try being steady with my work. I really need to go at a more controlled pace. I did make a decent grade on my test though, so I’m happy about that.

  2. I would rate myself as 4/5 this week because I have been able to finish most of my SI measurements and feel okay about all the tests I have taken and I am starting to get into the swing of things but still need to calm down and pay attention more.

    • I am starting to try and do what my teachers say and thinking of calming things but also paying attention and doing my best on the work I need to get finished. cont. from first 4/5 post to make sure!

  3. This week in chemistry was a lot tougher than the past because we learned so much new information. I rate myself 4/5 this week in chemistry because I missed one day, but I watched the podcast so i was all caught up.

  4. A triumph for this week would be my test grade being higher than I expected. There is still room for improvement as always but it’s not a bad starting point for the year.

  11. This week I rate myself a 3/5. The Si units took some time for me to get but once I got the concept it was understandable. Im also getting more comfortable in your class. The only thing I struggled with is the lab that we did today, that was a true test.

  12. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. I feel like I could have done a lot better on the SI unites quiz if I would have studied longer just not for one day. But I understood everything else this week.

  23. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week because I did poorly on the quiz and I know I could have done much better. I feel like I am struggling with the formulas a bit more than I should be, but that can easily be fixed if I study for just a bit longer each night.

  24. I would rate myself a 3/5 because I did all my homework but I didn’t really understand everything that was on the homework. Although, the building your balance lab is coming along pretty good!
