Chemistry 1-28-16 Wave Properties of Light

CHEMISTRY: So tell me again, if we’re supposed to be figuring out electrons, why are we studying waves? Here’s the combined lecture from Thursday & Friday on that very thing. Make sure you know the types of electromagnetic radiation and the uses of most of them (all except for long waves). And just in case you really need to sing that song again, here’s The Electromagnetic Spectrum Song

How did you like the light problem formulas – so far? We’ll explore wave problems further next week – be sure to bring a calculator to class!

Hon Chemistry 1-26-16 History of the Periodic Table & cLAB: Element Reverse Scavenger Hunt

HON CHEMISTRY: Great start to a new chapter! I love that you are going to be learning to research some really cool stuff about the elements on the Periodic Table.

Here is the intro the the history of the periodic table and and intro the cLAB: Element Reverse Scavenger Hunt. In addition, I’ve spliced the brief intro notes I will gave you for each block onto this one vodcast. Please let me know if it is too long for you to open, and I’ll go back and post it by pieces!

Physics 1-27-16 Stability & Torque Problems Review

PHYSICS: Ohhhhhhh, so that’s how that trapeze guy stays up there! Wait – what’s the pole for?? Great opportunities for discussion and application!?!

Here’s the discussion on how stability relates to center of mass. At the end, a couple of torque problems from the homework, Torque Worksheet 1.

Physics 1-25-16 Torque & Rotational Equilibrium

PHYSICS: Welcome to the first day of a brand new chapter in physics – one of the last we’ll do on mechanics!! Here’s the lecture on torque – a different kind of motion involved. So how’s the balance in your life right now?

Chemistry 1-26-16 Spectroscopy Lab

CHEMISTRY: How’d you like playing with light? Kind of pretty, huh? Check with me in class – we may end up doing the outside part on Thursday instead of Wednesday as it’s a bit chilly outside!!! If so, the lab packet will still be due at the end of the period on Thursday so you can finish those last couple of questions.

Are you clear on how to turn in the lab report? Observations from the diffraction grating today will be in two parts: 1) the written observation – answers to those four questions for BOTH types of light on notebook paper, and 2) your drawings of both kinds of light on card stock or heavy white paper, and then both drawings mounted together on one sheet of construction paper. Be sure to label everything.

Observations from Part 2 with the spectroscope will be answered on the actual lab sheets/packet. Be sure and read ahead so that you can double check to make sure you answered every single observation and question. The entire packet will be due on Thursday!!

Hon Chemistry 1-20-16 Ch. 4 Help Session

HON CHEMISTRY: I actually remembered to record the help session from this morning! If you haven’t already, check out yesterday’s post – good stuff about the test there. God bless you as you study!!

Chemistry 1-20-16 Chapter 21 Test Overview

CHEMISTRY: Are you ready for the test tomorrow? Be careful and don’t take the test for granted! Also, make sure you got a copy of the Chapter 21 Stuff to Know & Study Suggestions sheet from Edline. Help session tomorrow morning, 7:20ish A.M.

Make sure you practice half-life problems and nuclear equations. Also, make sure you’ve memorize the nuclear symbols for alpha particles, beta particles, positrons, neutrons, and protons. And then there are tons of notes on the conceptual stuff. Properties of radioactivity, people, types of radioactive decay, applications of radioactivity, units fo radioactivity, definitions, definitions, and definitions!

Practice everything! And did I mention, PRACTICE!! Need some extra help? God bless you! I’ll be praying!!

Hon Chemistry 1-19-16 Chapter 4 Overview

HON CHEMISTRY: God bless as you begin studying for the chapter 4 test! Here is the review that we did today. First, electron configuration do you know how to write it and then how to use it to determine the period, block, group, and type of element you have? The location of blocks on the periodic table is pretty significant, huh?

And then, what about the problems – the key is practice, practice, practice. Need extra help? Help session tomorrow morning at 7:15ish A.M.

Have you checked out the Chapter 4 Stuff to Know Sheet from Edline? Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to memorize the things you need to memorize so that you can apply them on the test. And practice, practice, practice, the problems and electron configurations. Did I mention that already?

What about applications for discussion? Photoelectric effect, spectroscopy, etc.? Another great idea for studying is to watch the videos that we watched in class – super helpful as you study for the test!! Here are some of them:
Spectrum of the Stars (overivew of the results of the spectroscopy lab you did, shows the connection between our lab on spectroscopy and how we can identify elements), Emission Spectrum of Hydrogen (how we use it to know about the energy levels in an atom), Quantum Mechanics (about the roles of Bohr, Schrodinger, Heisenberg), and also Animated Quantum Mechanics.

Tomorrow we’ll be doing another application of the info in this chapter – triboluminescence. Fun times ahead!!

Hon Chemistry 1-15-16 Electron Configuration & Blocks of the Periodic Table

HON CHEMISTRY: Wow! You learned a lot today! Don’t we serve an awesome God?!? You probably knew the periodic table was really organized, but did you realize that it was THAT organized? Awesome!

Practice what you learned today. You’ll get the hang of it in no time!

Thanks for your flexibility when we switch classes. Thanks, Ethan, for being such a good “pen man”! Since we weren’t able to record today, here a lesson from last year.
