Chemistry 12-7-15 Isotopes & Average Atomic Mass

CHEMISTRY: Isn’t God awesome to give us minds to understand the world around us – even the parts we can’t see!

Here’s the lecture from Monday on isotopes and average atomic mass. It’s the last lecture for this chapter – and for this year!! Be sure and make the change to your HW – add #11 and change the directions to say “Write BOTH the hyphen notation AND nuclear symbol for each of the following.”

Don’t forget your sock and can and at least 3 or more different items in it for the lab tomorrow. Speaking of labs, last make-up labs will be tomorrow, Tuesday, morning, 7:20ish and this Thursday afternoon at 3:40.

How are you doing on writing nuclear symbols? Also make sure you can use them to determine the number of protons, neutrons, electrons, etc., AND be sure you can use the formula to find average atomic mass! Happy calculating on the problems for tonight.

Can you believe atoms are that small – and the nucleus even waaaaaay smaller! The thumbnail is a picture of atoms from the IBM Almaden Research Center. These are iron atoms on top of copper. Being able to move atoms around like this was a giant leap in the field of nanotechnology! (Sorry about that, bad pun! 🙂 )

  1. I cannot believe it is our last week of classes for this semester!! It is amazing to look back and see how much we have learned and how we can apply it to what we are learning now! I also really enjoyed the design challenge today (except for the part where I couldn’t talk…)
