Hon Chemistry 10-4-11 Formulas with Polyatomic Ions & Binary Molecular Formulas

HON CHEMISTRY: Are you starting to see numbers in your sleep? Here’s the lecture from Monday on writing chemical formulas with polyatomic ions, and also an intro to binary molecular formulas. The same, but different……huh? Tons of memorization for this chapter – monatomic ions, polyatomic ions, prefixes, and this is just the beginning. Good luck, and keep practicing!!!

  1. Ms. Skinner, i forgot to ask you about a couple of the questions on the previous test, could I ask you about it after fall break?

  2. Will we have to memorize any more elements? Also, I was wondering, isn’t vinegar like 4% acetic acid? I think I remember you saying that at some point :).

  3. I know how to use the prefix system to name binary molecular compounds, but how do you use the stock system to name them? If you have carbon tetrabromide, would it be carbon bromide(IV) ?

    • Hope – You do it just the same way you do any ionic compound with an element that can have more than one “charge” (which, by the way, will always be the first element in the compound, never the second). So…. carbon tetrabromide would be carbon (IV) bromide.
