Chemistry 8-22-11 Chemical & Physical Changes

CHEMISTRY – Happy Homecoming! How’d you like playing with precipitates? Here’s the lecture on chemical and physical changes, and also on the laws of conservation of mass and energy. Good job on tracing the energy transformations from one form to another. Make sure you can apply all this on the test (and in life!). 🙂

Chemistry 9-21-11 States of Matter & Changes in State

CHEMISTRY – Hey guys! Great job with states of matter today! Lot’s of review, but did you learn some new stuff? Be sure and get the vocab down, but don’t forget to go back and make sure that you can apply what you learned! Let’s take this whole properties this a step further tomorrow!

Physics 9-21-11 Component Method of Vector Addition

PHYSICS – Great job today!! You conquered the graphical method of vector addition, you are also going to do a great job with the component method. Give yourself a chance to get used to it and it will click, I promise! Here’s the lecture from Wednesday.

Hon Chemistry 9-21-11 Classification of Matter

HON CHEMISTRY: Man – you’ve gotta love homecoming week! I don’t think I’ve talked so fast in a long time, and we still didn’t finish. So………we’ll finish tomorrow, but I decided to go ahead and post the full lecture from last year on the classification of matter so you’ll have it all in one place. How are you doing on the examples of homogeneous and heterogeneous matter? Here’s a question to think about, can you tell me three different types of homogeneous matter?

Lab tomorrow! After we finish the notes on pure substances, you’ll start designing another lab. Heads up – you might want to review the types of properties (qualitative & quantitative, etc.) and physical and chemical changes. I’m just saying. 😉

Chemistry 9-20-11 Intro to Chemistry

CHEMISTRY: We’re finally starting what chemistry is all about! Here’s the lecture from Tuesday on the intro to chemistry. Good job making applications with the branches of chemistry and types of scientific work! Make sure you have the vocab down, and be sure you’re able to apply what you learned today. Can you tell the difference between quantitative and qualitative, intensive and extensive properties, physical and chemical changes, etc.? Can you give me examples?

BTW – Have you started learning the symbols of the elements? Is that something you’ve had to do in your other classes? Don’t forget to check out the earlier webpost on quizlet.com. It’s a great way to begin memorizing them! 🙂

Physics 9-19-11 Intro to Vectors

PHYSICS – Hey guys, here’s the lecture from Monday on vectors – graphical vector addition, resultants, and the like. Have you done anything like this before? We’ll spend tomorrow practicing adding vectors graphically. Great start today – and thanks for letting me play on the Smart board! Don’t forget your protractor and graph paper tomorrow!

Element Symbols Practice Quiz

Hey guys, how are you doing on memorizing the symbols of the elements? Here’s a great study aid from quizlet.com. In the bottom right corner, click on “Choose a Study Mode” and you can change the layout and study different ways. If you already know them, try “Learn.” If you are just beginning to learn the symbols, I’d try “Scatter,” then go to quizlet.com (or click on the bottom left where it says “Study these flash cards”) and try “Space and Race.” I LOVE that game. It really puts your brain in gear and is great practice!

Good luck learning them – and don’t forget, the actual elements you have to know are the elements with these atomic numbers: 1 – 58, 60, 61, 74, 76 – 95.

Hon Chemistry 9-15-11 Matter and Its Properties

HON CHEMISTRY – Hey guys, here’s the lecture from Thursday on what exactly we’ll be studying in chemistry. I think most of this was review for you?? Make sure you have the vocab down, and be sure you’re able to apply what you learned today. Can you tell the difference between quantitative and qualitative properties, physical and chemical changes, etc.? Is a reaction endothermic or exothermic – how can you know? Let’s play around with the Law of Conservation of Mass next week!

Hon Chemistry 9-14-11 Intro to Chemistry

HON CHEMISTRY: So now that you know how to use all the tools we’ll need in chemistry, let’s start talking about that….chemistry!! Were you able to able to make applications with the branches of chemistry and types of scientific work? We’ll finish talking about the properties of matter tomorrow. Don’t forget to check your syllabus for homework. You might want to go ahead as soon as you can and begin memorizing the symbols of the elements, as well as the atomic numbers and mass numbers for elements 1 – 30. Is that something you’ve had to do in your other classes? Now it gets interesting! 🙂
