Hon Chemistry 9-15-11 Matter and Its Properties

HON CHEMISTRY – Hey guys, here’s the lecture from Thursday on what exactly we’ll be studying in chemistry. I think most of this was review for you?? Make sure you have the vocab down, and be sure you’re able to apply what you learned today. Can you tell the difference between quantitative and qualitative properties, physical and chemical changes, etc.? Is a reaction endothermic or exothermic – how can you know? Let’s play around with the Law of Conservation of Mass next week!

    • If we are answering conclusion questions 1 and 2 and extension questions 1 and 2 tomorrow for part two, do you want us to answer any questions for part one?

  1. I was looking over figure 8 on page 11 and I don’t understand why compounds would be under pure substances. Why wouldn’t it be under mixtures if you can still seperate it?

  2. I understand what a physical and chemical change is but how can you tell which changes are physical and which are chemical?

    • Hudson – Look for the three evidences that I gave you in class – gas produced, ppt formed, or energy released. Also, ask yourself – “Is this a brand new substance with brand new properties? Can it be changed back?”
