Physics 4-7-11 Sound Intensity and Resonance

PHYSICS: Hey guys, here’s the lecture from Thursday on sound intensity and resonance. Couple of items for discussion – so how does the whole hearing thing work? I mean, I know the little bones in your ear move, but why? Is resonance involved? Great item for discussion. And here’s another – why would different violins produce different sounds? I mean, is a Stradavarius valued so highly just because of the name? Let’s talk more about it Monday. Have a great time with the video tomorrow!

    • Emily, the reason only some sounds echo is because most echoes are too close to hear. when the ear hears a noise it sets a volume level for a few miliseconds or so and will not process anything above that volume level. Echoes too close will not go above the volume level and are therefore not processed/heard. Echoes far enough away hit the eardrum after that volume level has dissipated and can be heard then. I actually did my SitN on this subject so I can show it to you monday

  1. I’m really sad that when we stuck the tubes out of the cars when we drove around to try to hear them make a sound it didn’t work. I think it was JT’s driving.

  2. interestingly enough I already researched some things in sound for a little side project that me and Austin are doing, and I already knew the formulas Length(of a pipe)=wavelength/2 (for open end pipes) and Length(of a pipe)=wavelength/4 (for closed end pipes) after personal experience of testing, these formulas were displayed in the most recent video we watched and work out quite nicely (used these while trying to cut pvc pipes to certain notes, due to crude methods etc. it needs to be tuned a little but from a general standpoint this formula worked out great)

  3. I awoke to a thunderclap this morning. As I listened to it rattle -ratta tat tat-and reverberate throughout the houses I could literally feel it shaking the foundation of the earth. Sound is energy.

  4. Oh my. Explore Zone was fun but so crazy. Those kids! “Can I have a balloon? i didn’t get one!” Oh well. I hoped they learned something besides some balloons can go really high. haha. It was a lot of fun for the kids though I think. πŸ™‚
