Great review today! So can energy be destroyed? Good job on tracing the energy transformations from one form to another. Applications, applications! Make sure you can apply what you learned today – on the test (and in life!). Did I mention that already?

  1. The article, “This device uses the cold night sky to generate energy” by Maria Temming in the ScienceNewsforStudents is about a generator that uses the night sky to generate energy. The author uses other researchers information and an outside opinion of the device to tell the reader about it. The author uses data about it’s test trials.

In the article “Air pollution intensifies a teen’s feeling of stress” by Alison Pearce Stevens, a psychologist named Jonas Miller conducted a study to find out if air pollution had more than a physical effect on our body. He recruited 144 tweens/teens for the experiment, hooked them up to sensors to track their heart rate and sweat levels, and gave them all math problems that increased in difficulty. The study revealed that teens from more polluted areas in San Francisco were more stressed than those from less polluted areas. Miller suggests children to reduce their time outside, especially during rush hour.

  3. In the article “This device uses the cold night sky to generate electricity” by Maria Temming, scientists have found a way to use the cold night to generate electricity. A new thermoelectric device can generate electricity for an LED light bulb even during the blackest night, according to a report by researchers. The secret is using a phenomenon known as radiative cooling, which happens when surfaces on the ground radiate heat into the atmosphere. While solar panels will generate electricity during the day while there’s heat; this new device will continue the task at night when it starts getting cool.

  4. I chose an article about how sea turtles life are coming back in the U.S. Pacific. It told me that the lives of the turtles are in danger and they could go extinct. So scientists sent out scuba divers to go find sea turtles, they find damaged turtles homes and some turtles gracefully swimming.

  5. My article was about an ‘artificial leaf’ which produces clean fuel, and that could possibly replace gasoline. The scientist at Cambridge University have been studying how to produce a catalyst that would replicate photosynthesis, for seven years. The uses cobalt as a catalise and uses carbon dioxide and water. Overall it was a neat article.

  6. My article ” Algae inside blood vessels could act as oxygen factories” was about how putting algae into blood vessels could help with brain problems. The scientists used an experiment of using tadpoles and injecting algae into the blood vessels to see how the body reacted. The algae inside the tadpoles’ blood vessels can pump out oxygen for nearby oxygen-starved nerve cells. The new information will eventually be a type of therapy for stroke victims.

  7. In the article “New books explore why dogs and humans have such a special bond”, it talks about the reasons why dogs are so attached to us. They use genetic research to find out why. Also, it talks about how people should stop breeding dogs and adopt from shelters instead.

In the article “AI can learn real-world skills by playing video games”, it talks about how AI can use video games such as Minecraft and Starcraft II to learn real-world skills such as problem solving and strategy. They use experimentation and trial and error to get their information and improve their method.

This week I read an article about materials science/technology by Tyler Berrigan titled, “A Self-Cleaning Glass Keeps itself Spotless Underwater.” It explained the need for glass windows that require seldom cleaning, such as the ones in front of light-detecting sensors that test water quality. Seeking such a window pane, some scientists in Norway created windows with microscopic “pancakes” that repel dirt and oils, allow for the flow of water around them to constantly clean its surface, and are so small that view is not inhibited from one side of the glass to the other. This new glass along with normal glass were tested in an oily substance for 46 hours, revealing that the “pancaked” surface remained clean when the normal glass did not. These new windows have now been used in the ocean and decreased necessary cleanings from weekly to yearly in some cases. Although there are many improvements still to be made, the results have already brought major advances to the scientists’ worlds.

  10. In the article, “Proper Way to Turn Heat Into Energy”, it says how we can convert heat into electricity. They could get electricity from car exhaust, which would have a huge impact on the environment.

They hope to make a prototype big enough to produce more electricity. They say it can be used as a backup generator or even for a source of electricity for parts of the poles that don’t see sunlight. The use this in place of solar panels.

  12. In the article Fireworks shower the skies with science by Sid Perkins, scientists wanted to know the ins and outs of fireworks. Therefore they went to a firework show in New York to get information from the experts. While there, they met the Guinness World record holder of the world’s highest rising firework. They are told how fireworks work such as an oxidizer which allows the gunpowder to burn longer and better which allows for a higher rising firework.

  13. In the article, “Air pollution intensifies a teen’s feeling of stress” it talks about how teens who live in cleaner, less polluted areas respond better to stress. They did a series of test on teens and the teens who lived in more polluted areas showed irregular heartbeats and sweaty hands. It is the small pollutant particles that teens are breathing in and It is taking an affect on their mental health.

In the article “Tiny thermometer measures how mitochondria heat up the cell by unleashing proton energy” by Liz Ahlberg Touchstone, two students at the University of Illinois created a tiny thermometer that can read the heat the mitochondria gives off. It took many trials and errors because cells are so sensitive to outside objects. But when they found one that worked, they also discovered that the mitochondria releases protons to create the heat.

  15. The article I chose spoke about vaping and how it is becoming more common amoung the youth. In this article in talked in detail about the rising number of students and if they have personally encountered e-cigarette products. In most cases students at one point had used or been around others using these products.

In the article, “Are computers better than people at predicting who will commit another crime?” they show how experiments were made to determine if humans can predict if someone is going to commit a crime again better than computers. They asked 20 random people who would commit another crime and who would not from a list of people.Then, they compared the percent of accuracy of the computer’s conclusions and the people’s conclusion, and the results were abut the same. So the researchers concluded that if more experienced people determined if someone was guilty they would be more accurate than a computer software.

  17. In the article “ Slower brain development ups a teens risk of getting in a car accident” is about how a teenager is more likely to get in a car accident because their brains are not developed enough to respond as quickly as an adults.

  18. The article I had was about the topic of how Mars had salt lakes and thriving with life before a meteor hit it destroying most of the life it once had. The way they came about observing these once to be conditions was they looked at the divots saw signs of life and once it was tested on Mars. They confirmed these amazing discoveries.

  19. The article I text was about what astronauts left on the moon I went to first time. They only thing that works is the thermometers they put in the ground.

  20. The article I read was about how teenagers with slower brain development have a higher risk of getting into a car crash than teenagers who don’t.
