Chemistry 4-10-19 Polyatomic Ions & Molecular Geometry

CHEMISTRY: Great job with polyatomic ions and molecular geometry today! Who knew we’d be doing geometry in chemistry?!?

For tomorrow, be sure and print and read the cLAB: 3D Molecules! Advice for Lewis structures – don’t forget to count the electrons! And then double check the number of electrons. And when you think it’s right, count the electrons!! 🙂

Advice for molecular geometry? Make sure you know how to draw Lewis structures, then determine the type of ABE structure and you’ve got it. Easy-peazy!

  1. This week i would rate myself a 2/5. I haven’t been as strict on my school work as I have been previously and I have been forgetting a lot lately. I have been working on the research project though, which is good. My goal is to keep up with my homework as well as finish a chunk of my research for the project.

  2. This week I rate myself a 3/5, I did not do that well on the test. I am starting to sort of understand this chapter a little better and I am getting most of the homework problems right! I hope to start the research project tomorrow and get some of it done.

  3. This week I’d rate myself a 2/5 because I didn’t do as well as I thought I did on the test and my grade suffered for it. I am determined to bring it up though and finish out with a B for the 9 weeks. Other than that, I did all my homework and payed attention in class so the only thing I feel I need to work on is my study habits. Anyways, have a great weekend!!

  4. i rate myself a 3/5 for this week i didn’t do so good on the test but i took good notes and understand the lewis structures

  5. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I did not do very well on test but it was very hard to me. I am going to try to do better on the next test. I have taken very good notes this week and i have understood Lewis Structures. The lab was kinda confusing today but I think I figured it out. I am very nervous about the project but I have already gotten a head start on it by reserching some materials and checking books out from the libary. I really hope I do good on the cLab and the project to boost my grade.

  6. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I didn’t do good on the test from last week. I understand the notes we’ve taken this week on bonds and the other stuff this week though. I’m going to begin my project tonight and work on it each day, so I can do well on it and get a good grade.

  7. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. It has been busy with the project along with all other classwork. I didn’t do as well on the test as I had hoped. I struggled with juggling all classes because of the load currently. I will work harder in the next week in order to get the best grade that I can.

  8. I would rate myself a 3/5 because I didn’t do so good on my test this week but I’ve been doing my homework

  9. I would rate myself a 2/5 for this week. I didn’t do good on the last test, but still higher than what I used to make. I didn’t understand some of the lesson either. I have a lot of catching up on if I want to pass the next test.

  10. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. This week was kinda rough with all the new notes and stuff we learned and getting the project but it was okay overall. I forgot to do my web post last week so that’s tough but I thankfully remembered this week to do it early on. I have started the project and hopefully am on a good starting point.

  11. This week I would rate myself a 2/5. I did not do good on my test but I hope to retake it. We have been jammed this week with lots to do so hopefully I can start on my project this weekend.

  12. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. I did ok on the test and i understand the Lewis structures. I hope to get a good start on the project this weekend too.

  13. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. I didn’t do as well on the test as I hoped, but I’ve heen doing better on the homework’s and understanding our lessons more. I’ve started doing some research for the project and I hope to stay on top of it.

  14. This week I’d rate myself a 3.75/5. I did good on the test, but I was very annoyed by my minor mistake, which was something I knew the right answer to. I have really enjoyed working on the project this week. It’s like a puzzle kinda, and it even has false rabbit holes, one of which I spent quite a bit of time chasing yesterday. For one of the chemicals, I could only find one reaction that would be anywhere feasible with the materials given, so I figured that must be the use for it. I did tons of research into solubility and other topics to see if I could find a way to obtain a semi-pure sample of the other substance necessary. The only one I believe is possible, though, requires 4-5 items, and only returns a small amount of the substance needed. I feel like this may be similar to what chemical engineers sometimes do. The chemists have already figured out most of the reactions, but the chemical engineers have to figure out how to make them work in the real world as well as be financially viable. I previously had not even considered ChemE as a potential major, but this project has made me reconsider. I guess the only way really to know if I wanna do math, mechanical engineering or chemical engineering is to take some classes once I get to college, so the good thing is I don’t have to stress about it now. I also enjoyed learning about Molecular Geometry this week, and it reminded me of a paper I briefly looked into concerning protein folding in cells. Apparently, there are so many atoms different charges that it is nearly impossible to simulate what happens on an atom-by-atom basis, so instead you must use other methods. If I remember correctly, one of them was using field theory and looking at what combinations of amino acids look like, but the more interesting one to me was representing each amino acid as linearly independent vectors in some high dimension vector space, thus making any them basis vectors. Any protein could then have a unique vector representation in terms of adding these basis vectors. It sounds complicated, but I believe the point of it was to minimize the amount of information necessary to uniquely identify each amino acid. All in all, I did pretty good this week. Hopefully, I won’t make a mistake on this next test and finally get that elusive 100, but to be honest I am pretty content with my test grades thus far.

  15. this week has been an ok week for me. i would rate myself a 2/5. i didn’t do too good on the test. i did good on the homework we had and I’ve been able to grasp everything we’ve learned in class. i really need to good on the cLAB. overall, this week has been alright.

  16. I rate this week a 3/5. I didn’t do as good on the test as I thought I did and I haven’t been as strict on my grades as I usually am. I have been doing pretty good on the homework and staying on task I just need to learn how to not procrastinate when it comes to chemistry.

  17. this week i’d rate myself a 3/5. i didn’t do as well as i thought i did on the test but i understand why and hope to do well on the next test and on the project. i am taking good notes in class and am understanding everything we have been talking about. i have been checking out books for the project and hope to get a good start on the project especially since i won’t be here next week.

  18. this week i’d rate myself a 3/5. i didn’t do as well as i thought i did on the test but i know why and hope to do well on the next test and on the project. i have been taking good notes and i understand everything we have been talking about. i also have been checking out books in the library and hope to get a good start on the project especially since i won’t be here next week.

  19. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I did not do well on the test; it was very difficult to me. We have a lab due Tuesday, and i am going to try to do very well on it to help bring my grade back up. So far I haven’t forgotten to do any web posts or homework, so I am really hoping all the homework and extra credit will help my grade!! I have also gotten a good start on the project!

  20. This week I rate myself a 2/5 because I did horrible on the test because I messed up on the scantron but I feel like I can do better next week! I’m hoping my homework and everything is 100x better this week!

  21. I would rate myself a 2/5 for this week because I thought I did great on that test and studied a ton and in the end I didn’t do well at all. On the other hand because I was/am on a trip I decided to go ahead and do my cLAB so that’s a good thing. Well I hope for a great rest of the trip and week in general!

  22. This week i rate myself a 3/5. I think i did good on paying attention during class. The test was hard and i hope i can do better on the next one.

  23. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. I didn’t do too well on my test so I need to study harder for the next.

  24. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. I did not do as well on the test as I had hoped. I was also upset that the project was announced this week. I’ll have to work hard to improve my grade in Chemistry.

  25. I rate myself a 2/5 this week because I did very poorly on my last test and need to do better with my study habits and also make sure I do my homework.

  26. This week I rate myself a 4/5 because I payed attention in class, took some good notes, and learned a lot. I was a little confused at first but I got the hang of drawing structures. Next week I hope to continue to learn and make a good grade on the next test.

  27. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. I’ve been doing very well with the homework and when I get home and working the problems by myself, but when I get to school I feel completely lost. My goal for this next week is asking a lot more questions than I have done this week.

  28. This week, I rate myself a 3/5. I rate myself this because I felt unsure about a few things because you weren’t here. I didn’t fully understand some things but I will figure it out. I did decent on the test but not as good as I would have liked. I can learn from this test though. One of the big things on the test that I struggled with was time management. Having better time management is just a part of getting older and growing up.

  29. This week i rate myself a 2/5 because i did bad on the test and didnt do my homework one of the nights because i forgot . i am going to do my lab over the weekend and make a good grade.

  30. I rate myself a 4/5 this week, I am angry at the minor mistake I made on the test, it cost me a potential letter grade, but I did all my homework and classwork. I am loving the project, its almost like a puzzle, I’ve gone down some tangents searching, so I am excited to see how they pan out.

  31. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. I did not do good on the test but I think I needed more study time than I was able to have. I have been keeping up with my homework more than I was and my webposts so maybe that combined with my hopefully good project grade will keep my grade maintained at the level I want it at. I plan to work on the project and get as much of it done as possible way ahead of the due date. I also plan to use my time more wisely when I’m studying for the next test.

  32. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I did bad on the test but I took good notes this week and I am starting to understand everything. I kept up with my home work and i have started research on the project. I am hoping to get a really good grade on it.

  33. i would rate myself a 3/5 this week. i did not do very well on the test but i did do better than i thought i was going to do. I sort of understand what we’re learning now, and i know I need to practice the lewis structures more. i’m going to start working on my project soon and get a good head start.

  34. This week I rate myself 3/5. The Lewis structure were easy to learn and it was great to practice with the homework

  35. This week I would rate myself a 3/5 although my test did not go as planned. I will recover by doing well on my lab this week and my project.the project is not hard it just takes lots of time but its very straight forward. I hope to improve by my study habits.

  36. This week I rate myself a 3/5 because I did a little better on the test than I’ve ever done but not as good as I want it to be. I have started research on my project and began doing my cLab.

  37. I would rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I did better on the test than I thought I did but still did not pass it. And on top of that we were given the project. So this week we definitely had many things to do and we also learned new things. But all and all this week wasn’t that terrible

  38. 3/5 I didn’t do well on the test, but I really am looking forward to the project. I think it is a good way to wrap up the end of this year.

  39. This week i rate myself a 2/5 i didnt do as well i wanted to on the test but i am going to study even more ahead of time so im not craming. I am hopeful i can still bring my grade up with the project whihc i have already gotten a head start on.

  40. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. Although this week was short for mei think I learned a lot. I think I have started to get the hang of Lewis structures and double and triple bonding. Overall a fun and learning filled week in chemistry.

  41. I rate this week a 3/5. I did pretty good the whole week except Friday. On Friday I started off well but near the end of the assignment I lost it. I wish to do well in the last couple of weeks.

  42. This week I rate myself a 2/5. I didn’t do as good as I thought I did on the chemistry test and right now I have no idea how to set up the lab that’s due Tuesday. I have my Lewis Structures drawn out on the paper but I have no idea how to do the 2-D and the 3-D models or how to get them looking right. Most people said you just need to continue playing around with it until it looks like a molecule. Hopefully I will have more time to ask about it on Monday so I can get it turned in.

  43. This week a rate myself a 3/5. I took good notes and did all my work but I have kind of put myself In a bad spot and am going to have to try very hard to get it back up

  44. WHEW!!! This week I would rate myself a 3.9/5. I understood some of what Ms. Skinner was saying about molecular geometry, but I think she’ll need to go though it again. Also, this weekend will be jam packed with both Latin and chemistry projects and lab reports. GOOD LUCK, EVERYBODY!!!

  45. I rate myself a 2/5 this week. I did not do great on the test so now my grade is much lower than I want it to be. My main struggle this week was finding time to do the work. It won’t be easy, but I know I can still end the year off with a good grade if I put in the work.

  46. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. I have been keeping up on the homework and knowing what we learn in and do it right. The lab and the big project is what i am going to work on this weekend.

  47. This week I would rate myself a 2/5. I did not do well on the test. I took good notes this week. I need to read instruction more on the lab and pay carefull attention to each step.

  48. This week i rate myself a 2/5 for chemistry. It has been been a rough and i really didn’t quite understand the concept of polyatomic ions

  49. This week in chemistry i would rate myself a 2/5. I has been a rough week bc i had trouble understanding how to draw polyatomic ions. I got it in class but once i got home, i didn’t understand it.
