Chemistry 1-17-19 Radioactive Decay & Half Life

CHEMISTRY: Today we finished talking about the properties of radioactive nuclides, then it was all about arrows and where to put them! 🙂

HOMEWORK UPDATE FOR THURSDAY (Due Friday): Pg. 672 – 674; 11 – 21, 30 – 33, 40, 42

So how are you doing with the nuclear equations? Feeling better about them now that you know what side of the arrow to put the particle on? Also, make sure you memorize the nuclear symbols for alpha particles, beta particles (electrons), positrons, neutrons, and protons – those are just as important as the arrow!

Great job today on our first look at half life! We’ll tackle them full force in class tomorrow. Bring your calculator! 🙂

  1. This week, I’d rate myself a 4.25/5. I really progressed in multiple subjects this week, but most notably chemistry. Before this week, I knew little to nothing about nuclear chemistry, so I got to learn a bunch of new stuff. Nuclear chemistry is interesting because it reminds us that no matter how much we think we know, there is always more to learn. Like, nuclear reactions don’t follow the rules that literally everything else we knew about did, which meant we had to come up with new theories about how matter and energy are related. In other subjects, I also made some advances this week. I’m starting to understand abstract algebra a little bit, and though I have a long way to go I feel like I’ve made some major progress this year. I also feel like I’ve found some motivation since my depressing web post a while ago, and a lot of it has been for chemistry. I really stopped studying chemistry on my own at about the end of October, but recently I’ve gotten some motivation to learn more. All in all, this was a good week.

  2. i rate myself at a 4/5 this week i understand most of the material we covered in class this week but i do need to look over my notes more and ask more questions about problems i don’t understand on homework

  3. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I did well with the material this week and took good notes. I was on top of my homework and getting it done early and figuring out which ones I missed in class. I went to the help session for extra practice and that helped me extremely to feel confident about the equations and material were going over. This was a very good week overall and I’m very anxious about this chapters test.

  4. This week i would rate myself a 2/5. I got two zeroes on assignments i did and it was just a hectic week. i understood the new material we learned, so that’s a plus. hope for a better week next week.

  5. I would rate myself a 5/5 this week. I did all my homework and understood all the equations although I might more practice and another plus is that I brought my grade up a lot. I really don’t have anything else to say. Good luck, everybody!

  6. This week I would rate myself a 4/5 for one time in my life in Chemistry I feel like I understand the topic on the first go around. I also did my goal of doing my web post woohoo (I failed miserably last week on my goal but I’m back on track hopefully) I also was able to do all my homework in the beginning of the day (still working on getting it done the night before). Next week I hope to have the same feeling or better about the topic so I can get my A+ on this test!

this week i think i did really well, i understood everything you taught and my studying skills have definitely improved, which meets my new years goal this year. i would rate myself 4.5/5 because there is always room for improvement. ive enjoyed learning about radioactivity i find it very interesting.

  8. This week I would rate myself a 3/5 because this week has been one of the most stressful. I am struggling with some of the radioactivity and half-life work, but I intend on having everything down pack by this coming up Monday. The homework has helped me understand a lot of what we are doing.

  9. this week id rate myself a 3/5. I feel that I am finally grasping the material. I have done all my homework so far and had around 1 question per assignment rather than 20. I feel that my listening skills in class have definitely improved. this week may have been a stressful week in other subjects but chemistry was not as stressful which i am thankful for. i hope to continue to make sure i grasp the material rather than waiting til the last minute.

  10. I rate myself a 3/5 this week with all we have learned. I was a little confused on all the new information but once I did the homework I figured it out and got it. And I really did well understanding all the notes we took on radioactivity too.

  11. i would rate myself a 4/5 this week. i did really well on the homework and and took great notes. i really understood everything we went over in class and it was so much easier for me to do my homework because i got more involved during class. This week was not too stressful in chemistry and i think that may be why i did a bit better.

  12. This week I rate myself a 3/5. The half life was confusing towards the first part of the week but I caught on very quick. I also liked hearing about the chemist of our past time.

  13. I rate myself a 4/5 this week. I have done really good this week with listening and taking notes. I was kinda mad at myself because I didn’t really understand some problems. I was mad at myself that I didn’t go to the help session this week. Overall, I did really good this week and I am very proud of myself.

  14. this week i would rate myself a 4/5. i did really well on everything this week. however, i need to manage my time better because i didn’t finish my homework most nights until really late or the day it was due and it made me so tired. i am going to fix my homework routine so i get more rest and get it all done.

  15. I rate myself a 4/5 this week, while I understand the concepts in class, I missed two homework assignments. I’m actually enjoying the nuclear structure and more theoretical concepts.

  16. I rate myself a 4/5 this week, though I understand the concepts in class; I missed two homework assignments. I actually enjoy the nuclear structure and more theoretical concepts. My goal for next week is to do more of my homework assignments

  17. i rate myself a 4/5 this week. i give myself this rating because i understand the chapters we’ve been discussing and i already started to look over them. next week and over the weekend i intend to study hard and be well prepared for the test.

  18. This week I rate myself a 4/5 because I did well on homework and etc.. I missed Thursday which was the introduction to Half-Lives but when I came back Friday to seemed to understand most of it. I wish to continue this hardwork.

  19. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. I did all my homework and didn’t procrastinate. I worked through the problems and made sure I was doing it right. I took pretty good notes this week but I don’t understand how to do half-life completely well. I am going to look at my notes and make sure I do it right on the homework.

  20. this week, i would rate myself a 4/5. i have been doing better in all of my classes. I am also learning a lot about nuclear chemistry.

  21. 4/5 would be my rating for this week because I was recalling understanding the math part of the radioactive lesson. I do need some more work on the definition of certain important words. Also some word problems get confusing so I would need some more work on those but other than that the week has been good.

  22. For this week, I would rate myself a 4/5. We learned quite a lot this week and I feel I stayed on top of it for once, instead of just winging it until right before the test and trying to learn how to do it the night before. Although, I will admit half-life did kinda confuse me–but I think I have it now. I’ll just practice some more and try my best not to let you always work them for me. Have a great weekend!!

  23. This week I rate myself a 5/5. I really understood what was going on in class and took good notes, I completed all of my homework and for the first time have an A right now, feeling really good about the test coming up and I think it was a great week in chemistry.

  24. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I took good notes and actually understood them. I did well on my homework. Also,I think that changing my study habits will greatly improve my grades.
