Hon Chemistry 11-8-18 Polymers

HON CHEMISTRY: Oh, my word! We finally finished the chapter! Have you had a chance to check out the Chapter 7 Stuff to Know sheet?

Also amazing – did you realize molecules could be that large? And so many of them! Don’t you think polymers are some pretty unique compounds? Let’s play with them tomorrow!

Some items for contemplation: why are certain plastics recyclable and others not…and what about dishwasher and microwave safe?

  1. This week I struggled with the virtual lab. When I first started doing it, the lab did not make any sense to me. As I kept doing it and going through the instructions, it started making more sense. It was challenging at first because I was confused on how I was supposed to do the lab report on it, and I had no idea what I was supposed to be finding. To solve this problem, I went back and listened and read over the instructions again. It made more sense after rereading and listening to it a second time. Overall, this week I did well on the notes and understood it all, but the virtual lab was challenging.

  2. This week I have struggled with remembering how to work problems from earlier in the chapter. As I started to study for the test, I realized that I have forgotten how to work certain types of problems. I will practice all types of problems throughout the chapter instead of a few days before the test to fix this issue in the future.

  3. I have struggled with Polymers this week. I did not understand what exactly a Polymer was, but the more we talked about it, and when I completed the worksheet, they started to make more sense. I am still struggling with them, but I will read and reread my notes and study the worksheet as I prepare for the test. I also struggled with keeping all the formulas straight. I will memorize the formulas and work problems with the formulas to help with that struggle.

  4. As a k-highschool student at Northpoint I feel that in elementary school I never learned how to study and memorize things for the long term. For one thing there wasn’t really a reason to because after the test we wouldn’t see that information until we re-learned it the next year. Now that I am in chemistry I can’t just cram for the test or quiz and then cram for the exam because I must be able to recall the information on a daily basis. Over the past few weeks I have tried my best to continually study and review the acids, ions, and common substances we have to memorize. It is my goal to start studying and reviewing the information we have learned in advance for upcoming tests, quizzes, and especially our semester exams. Hopefully my plan for long term memorization will lead to less stress and forgetfulness during tests.

  5. This week I struggled with the virtual lab. I feel like really didn’t get it at the beginning but now I feel like I’m am slowly getting it.

  6. This week I struggled with rememboring the memorization and rules we had to know earlier in the chapter. I remember some of the memorization but I didn’t study how I should’ve so that I can remember them for the long term. The help session helped refresh my memory on how to do certain skills from the beginning and has allowed me to better know what I will need to really study to commit it to memory. I will go back through these skills, watch previous vodcasts, and reread my notes to prepare for the upcoming test and eliviate these struggles.

  7. This week I felt like I struggled the most with empirical and molecular formulas. When we learned it in class, I felt like I understood it, but when it was assigned for homework, I got confused about the problems with molecular formulas. Before the test on Tuesday, I plan on working problems from the book so I can practice the skills and check my work as I go!

  8. This week I struggled with remembering older material from the chapter. This chapter was quite a long one, with a whole bunch of material that we need to, not only memorize, but just know.

  9. This week I would rate myself a 3/5, because I pretty much understood the polymer lesson in class and I did well on our lab. Now I will study to do hopefully well on our test Tuesday.

  10. This week I struggled with remembering how to work certain problems on the homework. Since we have learned so much in this chapter, all the the formulas and steps for solving problems are jumbled up in my head. I especially am confused about the moles and molecules problems. I sometimes work them right and I sometimes work them wrong. I know if I go back watch the vod casts, review my notes, and practice I’ll be able to work them better. Hopefully If I study hard this weekend I’ll be able to overcome this struggle and excel on the test Tuesday.

  11. I am incredibly thankful for my parents. They do so much for me and my sisters. They work so we can attend a Christian school and get a good education. They make sure we are managing our time well and help us with school work in any way they can. Even when my mom can’t help me with something, she will just sit with me and comfort me while I figure it out. My dad has gotten out his old college books to help me with Geometry problems. They want me to be prepared for the life ahead of me, and they push me to be the best I can be. They love me so much, and it is shown not only through words, but through what they do for me. I am so grateful that God has blessed me with the best set of parents who love the Lord.
